Baseball America Nationals Top 10

Baseball America has moved on to the Nationals top 10 prospects list

  1. Chris Marrero, OF/1B
  2. Ross Detwiler, LHP
  3. Collin Balester, RHP
  4. Michael Burgess, OF
  5. Jack McGeary, LHP
  6. Josh Smoker, LHP
  7. Jordan Zimmermann, RHP
  8. Glenn Gibson, LHP
  9. Justin Maxwell, OF
  10. Colton Willems, RHP
Half of those players are from this past year's draft and eight of the ten have come into the organiztion since the Lerners took ownership. Only Balester and Maxwell predate that (and Maxwell was a Bowden pick in 2005).

Balester
can move on down the list at least 6 spots. otherwise, not a bad list.
I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

I can see why he's #3
He was #1 last year and did not have that bad a season to drop him that far down the list. BBA seems to attempt to keep their lists relatively consistent from year to year.

He's probably more a 5-7 guy, in general.

Why all the hate...
...he's a good pitcher. Besides, proximity to the majors matters and, other than Justin Maxwell, none of the guys below Balester have even reached a full-season league yet.

Not Hate
I just think it shows how much the Nationals have improved their farm system in the past couple of years.  Though I agree with you that Balester is a better prospect than Maxwell.  I saw him in the AFL and came away unimpressed with his play that day.  Mahalo

So I'm guessing...
my dream of Clint Everts kicking ass and taking names is over?

Dammit man.

Esmailyn Gonzalez
Any thoughts on this young shortstop?  Should he be in top 10?
The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

Yeah
I thought he would be on there, considering his ceiling, but it looks like the Nats have done a really nice job getting some nice prospects in the system, pushing down a guy with a big ceiling but a long way to go

I for one am pretty impressed with what they've done

i know, isn't it crazy?
last year reading the offseason nationals farm reports was like taking medicine.  now one year later every last guy on this list is interesting.  it's amazing.

jack mcgeary
i am a student at stanford and i see jack mcgeary quite often...its quite interesting actually. its hard to see him and then fathom that he is the 5th ranked nationals player

Marrero
Where do you guys think Marerro is on the top 100?

by nyy601 on Nov 7, 2007 4:37 PM EST reply actions

My guess
The 20 - 40 range.  He displayed great power, held his own in High-A ball in his first pro season, and has an enourmous ceiling.  Even though their games are quite different, Marrero and Snider deserve to be close together in the rankings based on what they accomplished in 2007.

by guru4u on Nov 7, 2007 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

Marrero and Snider
seems fair to group them based on 2007 performance.  Though what Snider is doing to AZL pitchers might be creating a little separation in performance.  300/400/600/1000 against guys much older than him.

by siddfynch on Nov 7, 2007 6:08 PM EST up reply actions

Well
According to some people, if you don't hit over .400 in HS, there's no chance he'll be a "star".  Marrero hit .375 his senior year, sorry.  Mahalo

Marrero and Burgess
Love Marrero and Burgess.  What a great pair of young hitters to build the future around!  Burgess has to be one of the steals in the 2007 draft. I wonder if they will make it in time for a 3,4,5 of Marrero, Burgess and Zim?

Not so high on the pitchers.

Can Wily Mo slide into CF for a Marrero, Pena, Burgess, Zimm core?
