Im a little surprised to see Brackman that high, given he's either needing or had arm surgery.  His upside is there though.  Definately think Bettences should be higher, as I can see him being a monster at the back end of games.

Edwar Ramirez?
Was that just to see if anybody is paying attention?

by Scott Proctor Fan Club on Nov 29, 2007 4:06 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

yeah i've noticed that before among yankee fans
they seem to think that hes an established ML reliever (some even think a setup man) all of a sudden yet the guy pitched to an 8.14era...and that wasn't blown up by 1 bad performance, he gave up earned runs in over half his appearances (11 of 21)...for a relief pitcher thats about as bad as you can perform

people still like him because anyone who doesn't crush the ball strikes out bad on that change but the bottomline is hes not even on the servicably bad ML reliever level, hes a good minor league pitcher...hes 26, doesn't throw hard and has no breaking pitch to speak of, there doesn't seem to be much room for development which to me does not indicate a top prospect or even a player worth holding onto really

I like Ramirez...
sure he sucked for much of his second callup, but you can't ignore how volatile relievers can be.

This is the kind of guy who can come out of "nowhere" and be a solid reliever for a little bit.

88-93 fastball and a plus, plus changeup. You'd be surprised at how little a reliever needs for success, and what a guy with a pitch as good as his changeup can do.

by SenorGato88 on Nov 29, 2007 6:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

solid point
but stating that since hes a reliever he may 1 day bump into a successful season does not make me want to consider him a 3-star prospect any more than before, which was my original point

though i do buy into that same volatility in relief pitching so i see where you're coming from

by robcast23 on Nov 29, 2007 7:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True...
definitely not a 3 star prospect. No 26 year old reliever should get that kind of rating unless he just bloooows people away with his stuff.

Whelan over Ramirez
I just think Whelan will be better, but I guess that is just me

by dlpme77 on Nov 29, 2007 4:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I'm shocked at Ramirez
Didn't realize Goldstein had so much love for 26 year-old relief pitchers with 1 above-average pitch (granted, it's an amazing changeup).

I don't think it's love...
...but if he thinks that Ramirez is a major-league caliber and ready set-up man, that's deserving of 3 stars IMO.

Alan Horne as a 4-star
I like Horne ... but 4-star seems awful nice ... would be curious what KG said ... but I don't get BP anymore

by toonsterwu on Nov 29, 2007 4:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Horne
I view Horne to be a similar prospect to Ian Kennedy.  By that what I mean is Kennedy is much closer to realizing his potential (if he hasn't already), whereas Horne, though further away, has a much higher ceiling.  So balancing the risk/reward between them, I'd say they grade out similarly.  I think it's a pretty reasonable placement for Horne.

To a extent
I also question the 4-star for Ian Kennedy.  Maybe I'm in the minority there.  That said, when I think of 4-star/5-star pitching prospects, I think of potential, say, number 1's or 2's.  I see Horne and Kennedy as more middle to end of the rotation options than front of the rotation.

by toonsterwu on Nov 30, 2007 4:47 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I have to admit
I question Kennedy as a 3 star.

Unless you factor in the fact that he has already proven his ability in a very small major league trial.

I think Horne is the better prospect if you delete what Kennedy has proven.

DeLeon
Isn't it a little early to be putting him on this list?

by Scott Proctor Fan Club on Nov 29, 2007 4:51 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

hmmm
I can make an arguement for Ramirez as a pretty good one pitch pitcher but the fact that he is a one pitch pitcher should keep him out of the top 10.

Health was rated a bit too heavily here in some cases as Sanchez is better than a 2 star prospect.

Ramirez
Seems to me the Yankees already have a pretty decent one-pitch closer... would he not make the top ten if he were on the way up?

by JRTwins on Nov 30, 2007 2:28 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe
but probably not if he were 26, as Ramirez is.

LOL
If Mo's second best pitch was a 91 MPH straight fastball it might be a better comparable.

by emac2 on Nov 30, 2007 11:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ramirez is not a blazer
but it's like he throws the ball, 84MPH either.

He has a solid, low 90's fastball that he needs to command better to set up his change up.

All in all, I thought the list was cool though.

I like Whelan, but his control is brutal and I don't know if he ever will tap into that potential. The good thing though is that Whelan will start the year in triple A, so if he starts of great, he might be in the yankee bullpen by july or even june.

I think Melancon is the key though.

If I were to fix this a little....
Five-Star Prospects
Joba Chamberlain, RHP

Four-Star Prospects
Ian Kennedy, RHP
Austin Jackson, OF
Jose Tabata, OF
Alan Horne, RHP

Three-Star Prospects
Dellin Betances, RHP
Jesus Montero, C
Humberto Sanchez, RHP

Two-Star Prospects
Mark Melancon, RHP
Francisco Cervelli, C
Jeff Marquez RHP

Just Missing: RHP Edwar Ramirez, RHP Ross Ohlendorf, RHP Andrew Brackman, RHP J.Brent Cox, RHP Ryan Pope (sleeper...),

-I moved Edwar down solely because a 26-27 year old reliever with one outstanding pitch shouldn't be a 3 star.  He is definitely Yankees Top 20, but not 11.  I took Brackman out of the Top 10 solely because he won't throw a minor league pitch until August at the earliest, April '09 at the lastest.  That being said, he could be incredible.  Melancon is moved up because he's probably the best reliever the Yankees have  (Don't be surprised if he comes up Joba-like, but staying in the pen).  I like J.Brent Cox and Pope as well.  I think without the injury, Cox is already locked into the Yankee bullpen.

You can see from this, the Yankees are extremely pitcher heavy.  Expect a hitter-heavy draft and a high-pick first baseman.

I like this one better
Though I would keep Brackman as a 3 Star.

Given what a good pitching prospect can get you (Delmon Young) I actually wonder if it is that bad of an idea to keep drafting pitchers.  It also seems to be easier to get a hitter as a free agent.

by emac2 on Nov 29, 2007 8:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

no real need for high-pick 1B
for 2008 you have Duncan/Betemit platooning, Giambi as PH

for 2009 you have Miranda or E. Duncan/S. Duncan platooning, with Giambi and Betemit gone

for 2010 you figure out which one is good, Miranda or E. Duncan, and keep him. Then you bring up Jesus (Montero) and have him rake

now, if Jackson or Tabata gets traded, then you can draft a high-ceiling OF in the 1st round or something...

Projected 2011 lineup (if everyone pans out)
C Francisco Cervelli
1B Juan Miranda
2B Robinson Cano
SS Carmen Angelini
3B Alex Rodriguez
LF Austin Jackson
CF Brett Gardner
RF Jose Tabata
DH Jesus Montero

BE Mitch Hilligoss, INF
BE Justin Snyder, INF-OF
BE Reegie Corona, INF
BE Jose Molina, C

SP3 Chien-Ming Wang
SP4 Alan Horne
SP5 Dellin Betances

LR Chase Wright
MR Kevin Whelan
MR Jairo Heredia
MR Ross Ohlendorf
SU Humberto Sanchez
SU J. Brent Cox
CL Mark Melancon

Is everyone down on Brett Gardner?
He will have a Bourn-like impact this year.

I like him!
I wouldn't mind starting him in Center if we trade Melky

Betances
What do you guys think about him? He's a guy I don't hear a whole lot about, apparently because he hasn't had a whole lot of exposure yet.

by Flynn Blake on Nov 29, 2007 11:50 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

He's got top notch stuff
Mid-90's fastball, good knuckle curve, developing changeup.  His control was pretty good for a guy his size, and has proved to be a problem for him yet.  His major question right now is health (shut down for precautionary reasons at the end of the season with elbow soreness/tightness) and developing consistency in his mechanics, but he certainly has the stuff and projectability to become a great major league pitcher.
