Stewart to 2nd?

Does anyone have any updates on the move?

If anyone has some resources or inside information, please share it with us.

I personally think it would be great for the organization. It would free up money and would add another basher to an already potent lineup.

I know Stewart isn't loved around here, but I think he has the tools to be a solid regular.

Stewart
Has the tools to be more than a solid regular.  Wrist injuries have seemingly sapped his power, but I can't imagine a 22 year old not being able to regain some of his power stroke. He's been above average and relatively young at each stop.

I've seen him play a couple times and it certainly looks like he would be able to make the switch to 2B without costing the rockies a ton of runs.

That being said, I haven't heard much on whether he will actually switch.

Rockies Fan
Rockies fans are staying on top of this issue. Personally I'm not sure Stewart can Hack 2B.

However, I was really surprised a few years ago when the Rocks didn't move Baker to 2B.

There's quite a bit of uncertainty with Colorado right now. They will be trying to get Holliday to a multi year extension. Atkins may never fetch more in a trade.

Stewart inheriting 3rd isn't out of the question. The Rockies would likely have a positional player probably SP, 2B or CF coming back in return for Atkins.

Anyway, I'm sure moving Stewart to 2B isn't the first option but I'm sure he's continuing to work on his defense this offseason. The kid's real problem is that he can't hit any MLB breaking stuff.

I'm not saying he won't come around but to me his new stance looks ridiculous. He's made so many changes to his swing its amazing. The kid used to look like a left David Wright but with higher hands and tremendous power. (Not that Wright doesn't have power) Now the kid looks awful. Then again the Rockies really helped Tulo this year. So who knows.

position changes
If you do think Stewart is still a superprospect, then IMHO you should be really skeptical of this, because you can't expect to slap someone at a position that is tougher than the one he's played his whole life, and that he's never played before, and expect it to work because "he has the tools."  It doesn't work like that, and many players have been messed up in the attempt.

However, I don't think Stewart is that valuable a property anymore.  I would severely question at this point whether he will hit enough to play 3B or 1B.  So if you agree with that, you really might as well move him to 2B, so that he can make the team and have some value.

and boom goes the dynamite.

True, but
If he does play 2B in 2008, I would expect some pretty ugly D.  Like you said, 3B to 2B is a tough move for a player.

Stewart
Stewart has turned himself into a really good defensive 3rd baseman. That leads to me believe that he can at least become an acceptable option at 2nd. Of course, I could be very wrong. For me, the greater concern is the bat. I know he's been young for every level, but three straight mediocre-to-fairly decent seasons doesn't spell prospect to me. Then again, I never though Matt Holliday would be an MVP candidate.
