New Elias Player rankings (links)

Here are the latest Elias player rankings which help determine the Type A and Type B free agents.

From  USAToday.com

National League-

"Slugging Colorado Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday led all National League players in the Elias Rankings released on Wednesday. He edged out St. Louis' Albert Pujols, last year's leader, along with Arizona starting pitcher Brandon Webb and Philadelphia second baseman Chase Utley.
Under the new collective bargaining agreement, the rankings are used to determine whether players are Type "A" or Type "B." The classification determines which draft picks former teams receive as compensation if they sign with another team. The top 20% of the rankings are "A" and the next 40% "B.""

Boggles my mind
that a guy who doesn't play defense at all is the #1 guy in the AL.... Dont get me wrong, Ortiz is really really good at what he does, but, no, he is not the most valuable player in the AL.

Agreed on Ortiz, but
While he doesn't play defense, he's not being a detriment to the defense at the same time. There are tons of hitters out there who put up All-Star numbers and most fans recognize them as great, but when you factor in their defense, they're usually average to better than average. These players would increase their contribution to their team if they were moved to DH, or at least moved to an easier position to field.

But yeah, it's clear that Elias is stuck in the stone age, and I'm sure they didn't consider this when they put Ortiz on top.

Chuck James is a Type A!
Not that this means anything, but Chuck James is a type A! Believe me, I love the guy, but any Braves fan who watched his starts last year might have a little trouble with that one. On the other hand, John Smoltz is the second-best starting pitcher in the NL, and I don't have any problems with that.

MICHAEL YOUNG???
Higher than Tejada, Jeter, A-Rod...WHAT???

Yeah...
IMO, Michael Young is the most overrated player in the league. He's been average at best most of his career and was a tick or two better than average when he won the batting title.

Humberto Sanchez?
How does Humberto Sanchez have any value?  He has never pitched in MLB.  Can you gain points simply by being on the 40 man roster and/or DL?

These rankings suck
This is an absolute joke.  The DH/1B/OF rankings has JD Drew ranked as an A player and one spot higher than Curtis Granderson.  WTF????  Giambi is #34, BJ Upton is 36, Kevin Millar is 37, Carlos Pena is 39 and Sean Casey is above Corey Patterson and Matt Stairs.  Melvin Mora is Type A (#14) while Kinsler is B (17).

In the NL, Brian Giles is ranked 18 and Prince Fielder is #22??

This ranking should tell you just how bad this is:
Ryan Braun #47.  Jack Wilson #28.
