Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Wow..the Diamondbacks are young

The two regular 'seasoned vets' on the team are 31 and 30 (Byrnes and Hudson), everyone else is like 24 and younger. Young staff in general too.

That's darn young for a playoff team.  Rockies have some good youth too.  West should be pretty darn interesting over the next several years.  Giants fans...things look pretty bleak...

Anyone think of a younger team than the Dbacks that did so well in the recent past? (Brewer's count I suppose, but playoff spot and record being key along with 6-7 less than 25 year old regulars)

Don't forget about the Dodgers too
Martin, Kemp, Loney, LaRoche, Billingsley, ect.  They have a very good young core.  The West will vbest very tough the next few years.  I would say the D-Backs will probably turn out to be the best team, then the Giants and the Roockies.  That's not even talking about Peavy and Young in SD.  Unless Lincecum and Cain become absolutely dominant the Giants will probably struggle for a while.

do you mean
followed by the Dodgers and Rockies? Because you contradicted yourself with the Giants.

Tony Clark
is 35.  Davis and Livan are 34.  Unit is ancient, and O-Dog is nearly 30, although both are obviously out for the postseason.  And Hudson's replacement, Ojeda is like 33.

Livan's 32
is, I think, in dog years.

I'll be nice and say he's "only" really 35.

dog years
If anyone, I figured Hudson's age would be in "dawg" years.

re
I think Livan was 35 when he was World Series MVP back in 1997

And yet
He still wears pajamas.  To work.

re
but Clark isn't a fulltime starter. YOu factor Connor Jackson in there too and he's 24. Look at the rest of the starters on top of that: Upton, Montero, Drew, Young, Reynolds with Hudson barely 30 and Byrnes 31.

As I've said before, hopefully we take same of our position players savings and get a front line starter or two, because we could run sh1t for years

Giants Fan
No argument here.  The D'backs are loaded with young talent as are the Dodgers and Colorado.  The Giants have made some progress in the last 2 years, especially this last draft in improving the talent level in their system.  It will take another 2-3 years for that to work it's way up to he MLB level. With another high draft pick in 2008, that trend could continue.  I'm willing to live with a couple of down years if there is hope for the future.

I do think that the Giants could be closer than what most people give them credit for.  IMO, they have better pitching and more depth in their pitching organization wide than any other NL West team.  Some of their younger players may be underrated such as Frandsen, Lewis, Ortmeier and Schieirholtz.  Velez and Bowker may not be too far off either.  They need to be looking for a college hitter with power to draft with the #5 pick in the 2008 draft and they could look a lot better in position prospects.

So yes, props to the D'Backs.  Perhaps the upsurge in young talent coming out of their farm system as well as that of the Dodgers and Rockies has finally forced the Giants to re-evaluate their neglect of the draft and farm system.

Keeping hope alive.

Not To Mention
They aren't afraid to spend some money like many teams in the NL.  I think the Giants will be one of the premier teams in the NL in 2-3 years if they really commit to the draft, international scouting, and avoid wasting money on useless veterans...
