Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Ian Stewart Moving to 2nd?

I thought I read that somewhere. Has anyone heard this as well?

If so when did it come about?

Will he be able to make the move?

Will he start there in the majors next season?

Does it effect his numbers?

This seemed odd to me. I hope it works out would be huge for some fantasy teams. It would also give Colorado some great trade bait in Nelson. Sorry for the ramble at the end. I had to get my 300 characters. if you know how to get past that please post it.

I haven't heard this,
But if he can handle it without being a butcher (::coughcoughiankinslercough::), that's fantastic news. This would shoot him way up the prospect rankings for sure, if he indeed could handle it.

Kinsler
Struggled mightily early in the year, but he came back from injury miraculously cured of his defensive woes.

makes sense
The team's current run at least makes them believe they're a contender (they look more and more like a team of destiny every day, a little scary).  Moving Stewart to 2nd, like moving Atkins to 3rd helps maximize the bats they have.

Between this news and the shopping Atkins rumors they obviously feel Stewart's ready for a significant look in the bigs.

Wasn't Ian moving to the OF last year?  Now he's off to 2B.

Kaz
Is Matsui out of their plans then?

by mckeeno on Oct 5, 2007 11:40 AM EDT reply actions

Well
Matsui is turning 33 later this month and was only signed to a one year contract during the offseason.  It seems unlikely that they would just hand Stewart a job at a position he has never played before.  I would assume that the Rockies would like to bring Kaz back for one more year.

2nd Base
They better not move him to 2nd, he'll be awful there.

I think the Mets should go out and sign Matsui next season.

How so?
Does he have poor side to side range?  Poor hands?  Poor reaction?  Not athletic enough to handle the pivot?

Leverage
Both Jeff Baker and Ian Stewart are going to be working on 2B this Fall.

Simply put....the Rockies have 3 3B in Atkins, Baker and Stewart.  At least 1 trade is likely.....the Rockies are trying to ensure they maintain leverage so other clubs don't low-ball them knowing the Rockies HAVE to trade somebody.

So whether or not the 2B tryout works.....I think it is at least partically motivated by ensuring trade value is propped up for all 3

a 6'3" 2B
seems a bit unlikely.

Didn't they say the same thing about a 6'2" SS?  What does height have to do with anything?  We're not talking about putting Gheorge Muresan out there...

by cooper7d7 on Oct 5, 2007 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually
Gheorge would make a helluva cut-off man.

Stewart
I'm more concerned with Stewart's hitting ability. This guy can't hit a MLB breaking ball at all and during his time in the majors he's swung at everything.

The Rockies re-tooled this kid's swing and it is just nasty. His previous swing was gorgeous. They made these changes after one bad season.

His old swing reminded me of a left handed David Wright. Man it was awesome. I'll worry about where to put him on the field after he can hit.

There's certainly no reason why the Rockies shouldn't give Baker and Stewart repitions at 2B. Baker was a SS before being moved to 3B in College. Stewart is a decent athlete. Both guys are probably at least as athletic as Kent.
