Scott Rolen..Is the shoulder going to be 100% in '08?

When healthy, Scott Rolen has consistently been one of the premier 3B in all of baseball.

Lately Rolen has had serious issues with his shoulder that have impacted his 2005 and 2007 seasons. I've read that hes just had surgery on his shoulder to clean some tissue out. Does anyone know more about his injury and how likely he is to recover?

His arm is in serious trouble, to the point where I wonder if he can continue to play 3B for St. Louie in 08.  Unfortunately (for him), 1B is not an option.

Oh and
"Consistently been one of the premier 3Bs in all of baseball?"

Um, no.  Not since like 2004, maybe.  Unless you're list of "consistent, premier 3Bs" goes at least 5 deep (A-Rod, Chipper, Cabrera, Wright, and A-Ram), not to mention the next wave of big 3Bs (Braun, Gordon, Atkins, Zimmerman, and Kouz) are coming...

Rolen is still a very good defensive 3B, there is no reason he would need to move to 1B. Of his 10 errors this year only one was a throwing error. Grounders to his left seemed to give him the most problems this year.

The shoulder is always going to be a problem at the plate. An '06 performance is the absolute best you can hope for but I think that is unlikely from here on out. His shoulder will never be 100% again, it simply isn't possible.

Throwing arm
I didn't watch too many Cards games late in the year, but when I did it seemed his throws had lost a lot of zip, though they were still plenty accurate, as you mention.

If he continues to lose throwing power, I could see him having trouble staying at 3B, and he's obviously too big for 2B.

But I'll defer on this.

3b's
I think that of the "next generation," Braun, Atkins, and Zimmerman are already here, unless Braun gets moved off 3B because of his defense, and because of what limitations Rolen has had the past couple years, I'd take all 3 of them as well as the other 5 you mentioned before I took Rolen.

Wonderful player, I hate to see him hurt like this, but his career doesn't have a lot of huge years left in it any more. The end of the 2003 season really took a lot out of him, I think.

Yeah
I was trying to be nice, because I agree with your sentiment about Rolen.  It's tough to see him struggle like this.

No
Rolen, just like the Cards, are shallow shells of themselves.
