Question For Yankees Fans

Some of you have probably seen the recent press about Rudy Guiliani, who's come out and said that he'll be rooting for the Red Sox in the World Series, because he's an AL guy.

He's getting some flack for it in the press, and it made me curious:  Who are Yankees fans rooting for in this year's World Series?  When I was a kid, I was raised to root for my League no matter what, but Boston/New York is such a heated rivalry, I wonder if that's true for y'all?

Boood
Was Rudy Booo'd at Yankee stadium during the ALDS?

As a Twins fan, I am rooting for an exciting series.

A Yankee fan rooting for the sox?
No friggen way!

Rudy is the ultimate front runner.  He does whatever he thinks will help him in an election.

The man is disgusting!  He should never be elected for anything just because of the way he uses 911 as a political ploy.  From the way he tells it you would think he personally diverted the other two planes away from the city.

Heated Rivalry
Back in the day, when I was a hockey fan, my home town Edmonton Oilers and the team 300km to the south (Calgary Flames)were (and still are) heated rivals.

If the Oilers were eliminated, I would rather have seen any other team in the league win the Cup rather than the Flames, despite the fact that they were a team from the same country, and even the same province.

I'd be surprised if there are very many Yankees fans cheering for the Sox.  It just doesn't work that way.

Yankee Fan
I'm cheering for the Red Sox, although I do have some mixed feelings about it. Had it been the Cubbies vs. the Red Sox, I'd probably cheer for the Cubs. But I tend to cheer for the team with the most devoted fans if my team is not in it. I may not like the Red Sox, but they have a great team, some really fun players to watch (Ortiz, Manny, Papelbon) and the fans (who are just as "annoying" as Yankee fans) are knowledgeable and passionate. Denver is a football town and will follow the Rockies, Avs, and Nuggets when they are good. Boston is a baseball town. That's the deciding factor. I'm really disappointed Cleveland didn't make it just for their fans' sake.

Just for the record,
Yankee fans have been less obnoxious than Red Sox fans ever since Opening Day 2005. Yankees fans may be smug, but at least they don't shove it in your face and invade opponent stadiums like an epidemic, chanting "LET'S-GO RED-SOX."

Well .......
What did you say? Yankee fans have nothing to say. Seriously? Remember, you've only won 1 World Series in the last 100 years. If you're lucky you'll catch up to the Marlins in a week or so. If you're lucky.
I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

Thanks for setting me straight!
You bona-fide idiot. You're team has been the model of ineptitude for the better part of a century. I don't care what your team did before electricity was invented. Trying to compare the Red Sox to the Yanks is like comparing a Ford Pinto to a Ferrari. You see what I'm saying.

FYI .. 1 World Series victory since 1918 doesn't equal 26.

As I said .. F the Red Sox!

Dear Mr. Red Sox fan
The answer to your question is yes. A Ferrari is still a Ferrari even after it's crashed into a wall. Case in point, Kimi Raikkonen crashed into a tire wall real hard. Now look, he's world champion!

P.S. Don't get your panties all wadded up. I'm just messing with ya my little Red Sox buddy.

Also
I bore witness to 6 World Series victories as I am in my late 30's. I also witnessed another 3 losses. By my calculations the Yankees have either won or appeared in 25% of the Fall Classics since I was born in good old 1970.

Furthermore, they have averaged better than 1 win every 4 years over the past century.

They have always won and will continue to do so. The future is surely bright in the Bronx.

As I said, enjoy the World Series. Hopefully, you'll be able to pull even w/ the Marlins.

re
I guess you forgot the ol "1918" chant.

I went to a game in KC in 1998 to see Bos-KC and A Yankee fan, wearing his Yankee jersey (again, at a Boston KC game) chanting nothing but 1918 for the first 3 innings until a good soldier finally fell on the sword by throwing a beer on him and starting a fight, getting them both ejected.

I think the biggest aholes are the johnny come lately types, maybe I'm wrong there, I don't know.

I live in Kansas and Boston and NY "fans" outnumber Royal fans like 5-1 here.

My theory on this is pre 2000ish, everyone who wore a Red Sox hat was a real fan of team, at the same time, there were LOTS of NY hats floating around, having com off of their run of WS titles. Now it's the other way around, guys wearing the NY are the guys who are real fans of the team, and you can get a Boston hat in the checkout line at Target.

I guess what I'm saying is 95% of guys wearing Boston hats being jerk offs now were wearing New York hats during thier run being jerkoffs.

I'm not in this fight. I'm just saying that Yankees fans may still talk to you with venom, but they've kept their pretentious thoughts to themselves when they're talking to us.

The Red Sox are like little dogs
They bark and bark and bark when they see a big dog but run and hide if the big dogs heads in their direction.

Thanks - we appreciate that! :-)
Hello coochorama,

"I'm really disappointed Cleveland didn't make it just for their fans' sake."

We appreciate your sympathy - thank you!  :-)

Trust me, we're very disappointed too they didn't make it, though we're still proud of our Indians for the progress they did make this year and optimistic about our chances of winning the WS in the near future (outside of the fair-weather fans who are crying now that "we'll never win a championship in Cleveland" and "another Cleveland team chokes."  Those fair-weather fans who jump on after the Indians were in the driver's seat to winning the AL Central and make comments like those above after the Indians falter really annoy me - sorry.)

Just my 2 cents.

Again, appreciate the sympathies - hopefully, 2008 will be better for the Indians (i.e. a WS Championship.)  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

I'll generally root for my league
But if it's the Mets in the series (or maybe even the Phils), chances are I'll root for the other team, provided it isn't the Yankees.

OTOH, I'll always root for an SEC team in the championship game. Except Payton Manning-era UT. But yeah. Heck, I'd probably even root for Georgia.

i'd root for any AL team except the Red Sox

by nyybaseball99 on Oct 24, 2007 4:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Personally
I can't think of any scenario where it's okay for a Yankees fan to root for the Red Sox and vice versa.  This is Hatfield-McCoy stuff.

As for the fans of the Yankees not "shoving it in your face" comment above... I think I'll have to respectfully disagree.  That's not to say that we Sox fans haven't become somewhat self-obsessed, entitled whiners since 2004 (though much of that is the bandwagon effect, or so I keep trying to tell myself), but I still have Yankee fans who love to get their barbs in any opportunity they can.

One second
Self-obsessed I can see an argument for... but whiners? I know a lot of sox fans, being one myself, and I can't think of any cases where I've heard any whine since 2004 (aside from the standard and perfectly understandable "I can't believe so-and-so blew that game last night" or "Manny said such-and-such").
Most are thrilled to have that ridiculous monkey off our back and happy to be, as one writer put it "just another team"

This is a good spot to elaborate on my new post.
I don't doubt for one second that the needling hasn't stopped to Sox fans. However, that's obviously to be expected seeing as that's the most intense rivalry in American sports. But if you take my point of view as a fan of a team that's not even in the same division, it really has been a lot easier to deal with Yankees fans after seeing RSN triple in size (at least in Seattle) in the last couple years since we now have even more friends to complain to about all the obnoxious fans of a seemingly evil team.

I still have tons of respect for real Sox fans who had to wait forever for the frustration to end. And to tell you the truth, I do like the actual Red Sox since the team consists of so many likable and quirky guys who look like they're always having a blast. It's honestly hard not to like them. But I just have an aching need to see all those bandwagoners (as well as real fans who have become obnoxious) get knocked off their high horse. So sorry if that means you do too.

Also, I've always wanted to tell you that I love your sig almost enough to copy it : )

by elrey34 on Oct 25, 2007 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

To be honest
I kinda enjoy the sniping back and forth between Sox and Yankees fans.  But I'm a firm believer in picking your spots.  You can't jump on a guy right after his team has lost a heart-breaker.  And I think that's why Sox fans can be so overbearing, especially when it comes to the Yankees.  I remember in 2003 having a bunch of Yankee fans come up to me the day after the Sox lost the ALCS to make comments.  Nearly enough to make me go nuclear, except I was a complete husk of a human by the time Game 7 ended.

But I can certainly see your point, as well.  I lived in DC for five years, and went to a lot of O's games.  Prior to 2004, any time the Sox were in town, there was about a 50-50 split of fans in the park.  After 2004, any time the Sox played the O's, it was probably 3-1 Sox fans (again, the whole bandwagoning thing).  I felt bad that we had taken over the stadium (and to this day, when I'm watching the Sox in Oakland, I will cheer for them, but I try to be respectful, given that I'm not from the Bay Area, and it's not my "home" per se), but at the same time it made me angry that the O's front office, with all their resources, wasn't competent enough to field a quality team.  The best way to avoid being overrun by visitor fans is to have a solid team that draws the home crowd.  Then you can drown out the "Let's go Red Sox!" chants.  (And I will freely admit, those chants suck...)  On the whole, I think we're pretty much on the same page in the discussion, even if we are coming from opposite sides.

Glad you like the sig!  To this day I think Calvin and Hobbes is pure brilliance.  But I'm thinking it's about time to switch up the sig, so you're free to take it...

root for the underdog.  Come playoff time I will cheer for every team that is supposed to lose and if it the teams are comparable then the smaller market gets my support.

What I'm sick of
The whining about 'East Coast Bias'.
You want to know why the mariners, dodgers and royals don't get the coverage that the Yankees, Red Sox, mets and Phillies get? It's for the same reason that Major League Soccer and Ironman Triathlons don't get the same coverage as MLB or the NFL... it's because NOBODY FRICKIN CARES ABOUT THOSE TEAMS! The east coast teams have more fans, particularly more passionate fans, and as such get better ratings. ESPN is in business to make money, which means getting more ratings, they're not there to appease every fan base, no matter how small.

No Way
As a Yankee fan, there is no way I am rooting for the Sox. I actually bet big time on the Sox in game 3 of the ALCS and after they lost that game I can't tell you how stupid I felt for rooting for them. I told myself that if they go on to win the ALCS I would never forgive myself. Bastards..

by TheBoss on Oct 24, 2007 5:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Good God, do I have sympathy for you.
When the Indians were up 3-1, my co-worker bet me 20 bucks that the Sox would win. Like anyone with half a brain, I took the bet. And now that I lost, I bet double or nothing that the Rockies would win because I DON'T WANT TO BE WRONG, DAMMIT!! That might just be my downfall, haha.

by elrey34 on Oct 25, 2007 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Go Rockies
Maybe I'm just petty, but I always root against the red sox unless there is some weird scenario where them winning helps the yankees.  I've honestly never heard of people rooting for "their league."  I heard guilliani say that the other day and thought it was just BS.  If anything I think I root for NL teams in the series more, because they are usually the underdog.

How any true Yankee fan can root for the Sox is absolutely insane. It's totally insane.

As a Sox fan...
When the Yankees are in the World Series, I root against them, no matter who they're up against.  So I would be flabbergasted at any devoted Yankee fan who rooted for the Sox.

Also, if I WASN'T a Sox fan, I'd be rooting for the Rockies.  (Although, I might be torn, because it would be kind of sweet to see the Rockies get swept, so foolish baseball writers could scratch their heads and go, "What happened to momentum?")  I generally root for the underdog, and the Sox are only underdogs to the Yankees.  (Who STILL have a payroll 50% larger, or, to put it in another perspective, they could afford to buy all of the players in the World Series.  On both teams.)

mind games
I told my friends in Mass. during the ALCS that I was rooting for the Sox because they were expected to win and anything less would be a disappointment.  I told them that as a Yankees fan, I understood there was no joy in winning a Series, only relief they didn't screw it up, and I was with them because they're my friends and I understand.

I got into their heads.  That does make me a bad person.  :)
