Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Any of these worth keeping?

I just took over a team that has a number of pitching prospects and I need to see if I should cut them or if any of them have any chance to succeed?

Does anyone have any information about the following players?

Kevin Jepsen ANA
Jake Dittler CLE
Steven White NYY
Cesar Rasmos SD
Scott Tyler FLA

Any help would be great!

Off the Top of My Head.......
Man, those aren't exactly household names even to an avowed prospect junkie.  I'd have to see what players are available to you for replacement, but there's gotta be better stuff out there.

Agree
Not much to choose from there.  I would say Ramos is the 'best'.  BA rated him #19 in the Cali League in 2006.

Better stuff
if I let any/all of these guys go it leaves me more roster space for down the road.  Nothing much in the short term with what I can pick up, but since it is a team I just took over I can make more 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 deals with the spots available

wow
i'm such a prospect nerd it depresses me sometimes, and i've never heard of any of those guys.  is this one of those nutty 200-man-roster leagues?  if not, i'd drop everybody.

drop em all
I know I'm being redundant here, but there have to be better prospects out there.  I've heard of Dittler, but that's it.  No wait, maybe I'm thinking of Dirk Diggler.

Tyler
Came to the Marlins in the Luis Castillo trade with Travis Bowyer.  He's a live arm with pretty nice stats, nothing more.  He's always been a little old for his league.

Size Matters?
These names got my curiosity up since I had vaguely heard of a couple of them:

Kevin Jepson, 22 yo, RHP, 6'3", 200 lbs.  4-4, 3.58, 50.1 IP, 34 BB, 46 K, 16 Saves for Rancho Cucamonga in High A Cal League.

Jake Dittler, 24 yo, RHP, 6'4", 200 lbs.  5-10, 4.70, 130 IP, 50 BB, 54 K. 2.41 GO/AO. AAA Buffalo.

Steven White, 25 yo, RHP, 6'5", 205 lbs. 4-1, 2.11, 68.1 IP, 28 BB, 45 K. AA Trenton an extreme pitchers league.  4-9, 4.71, 107 IP, 42 BB, 88 K.  AAA Columbus.  Status- reassigned to minor leagues.

Cesar Ramos, 22 yo, LHP, 6'2", 190 lbs.  7-8, 3.70, 141 IP, 44 BB, 70 K.  ERA OK for Cal League, but K/IP is horrible.

Scott Tyler, 24 yo, RHP, 6'5", 210 lbs.  1-2, 3.67, 61.1 IP, 44 BB, 52 K.

Common denominators-  All these guys are big.  Maybe the guy who ran the team before you just liked big pitchers?

K rates are very poor in comparison to ERA.  Maybe your predecessor was just so anti-sabermetrics that he chose to ignore K rates altogether?

Maybe these guys were once rated as better prospects but then stalled in their development and the guy just lost interest opening the door for you to take over?

Bottom line:  There has to be better options out there now and in the future.  I'd dump 'em all.

Cesar Ramos
Cesar Ramos has a chance to succeed, but it really depends on how deep your roster is. He was ranked #11 in the 2006 BA handbook and there is a very nice summary of him in there. There is also a very nice write up in JohnSickels book last year. If you can have 40 or more players on your roster than he might be worth keeping. He was a front of the rotation starter for Long Beach, but he's basically a soft tossing lefty with great control. He's done well so far...but how many soft tossing lefties do you know that "really" make it.

Also, glancing at his numbers in the Cal league last year I wouldn't keep him.

Tyler
Scott Tyler had a very interesting 2004 season, even if he was 22 in the Midwest league.

Jepsen is still young, and every so often one of these super-wild guys finds some control.

Wildness
The problem with all these guys isn't so much that they give up too many walks. It's that they also have very low K/9 for serious prospects.  If they cut down on the walks, they'll most likely miss even fewer bats and get hammered.
