Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Penn and C Hansen

I did a search on Penn and didn't find anything on where the guy stacks up in the Orioles plans.  Is he going to be in the rotation this year?  He had to many innings to make the top 20 list for the Orioles but where does he stack up?  What is the outlook on Hansen?  Has his stock dropped?  Does he look to break with the team this year or did they ruin this kid by rushing him?

Penn...
reminds me a lot of AJ Burnett. They both are capable of pitching in the high 90's up to 100 mph but have injuries. While Penn hasn;t has TJ but he has gotten hurt, it seems like, at the worse times. He's still young and I think he has the most potential of anybody on the Baltimore staff because he has some great secondary pitches to compliment his fastball plus his control is good. I expect him to have a good year in Baltimore if he can finally remain healthy.

Hansen will not be closing this year probably but still could be the future closer for the Sox in 2008 on after.

Good thoughts on both.

Penn has the stuff, and has done well in the minors with it.  Played a few games in each of the last two years.  Losing time last year after being on a roll may have hurt his moral.  Not sure how he will come back, but does have some good stuff.  O's could start in the pen and work on getting him out at some point.

Hansen needs to work more on pitching to his strengths and forget about the radar gun and use his slider while pounding the corners with his sinker.

Penn is not Burnett
Penn may throw hard, although he didn't top 93 in the outing I saw him pitch, but I don't think the comp you made is fair to Burnett.  Every source I have looked at says Penn will never amount to more than a #3 starter, while Burnett as a #2 or even a weak #1 if he could just stay healthy.
Hey fish, leave those kids alone!

Penn
Since when is he capable of pitching in the high-90s?

I've linked some articles about Penn sometimes reaching 100 mph in the past on here before. I just can't find 1 rightat this moment. Here is 1 that says he can dial it up to the high 90's when he wants to.

I like Penn
Because, when I have watched him pitch, he has shown a FB that is in the low-mid 90's and a changeup that is is in the mid-hi 70's.  For some reason, hitters didn't struggle with the FB/Change combo like I would have expected...so he may be tipping his pitches...or he needs to work on repeating his delivery.  Regardless, independently he has shown a good fastball a good changeup, and a decent curve...so I'm inclined to think he will get it together at some point.

Hayden's Role
Well, I think he starts the year in AAA, but between Daniel Cabrera and Jaret Wright, I think he'll get a fair shot this year to stick. The bullpen thing is a  possibility I suppose, but I think they have to move Lopez for him to have a shot

Current pen:
Ray
Baez
J.Walker
Bradford
Williamson
Lopez

that's a lot of big names...I think he's first pitcher from AAA when something opens up even if Lopez is moved...

Would you keep.....
Penn or one of these other guys?  This is SIM league related.  I have 15 guys I can keep.  Penn or another guy would be the final cut.  Penn, Kotchman, McPherson are guys I would make a final decision on.  My rotation includes, Webb, CC, Vazquez, and Ian Snell.  I have minor league guys that will be up when the time comes in Lofgren, Liz, Adenhart.  I'm curious as to how this would affect your thinking.  Thoughts?
