Prospects Keeper Question

I have a big draft coming up in my keeper league and have a lot of guys eligible this year to be drafted.  These are the order I have them in but would appreciate some insight from everyone.
Position Players:
C-  Iannetta, R.Martin, Napolli, Johjima, Montero, Paulino
1B - Loney, Kouzmanoff, Morales,
2B -Kendrick, Uggla, Kinsler, Barfield, Pedroia,Callaspo, A.Casilla
3B - Fields
SS- Drew, Tulowitzki, Arias
OF - D.Young, Milliage, Markakis, Quintenin, Either, C.Young, Kemp, A.Jones, Lind, F.Lewis, Bourn, Cabrera, Hart, Guzman,Clevlen, Denorforia.
NO ORDER ON PITCHING.
SP - James, Loewan, Lester, Sowers, A.Miller, Zumaya, A.Sanchez, Hirsh, Weaver, Saunders, Billingsly, Garza, Perkins, Pelfrey, Hamels, Gorzelanny, Mathieson (IR), Marideth and J.Sanchez.

I have 4 of the top 40 picks in the draft, one being #8 or #7.  I need pitching, so will probably go with someone that will be effective right away, then go with some bats.  I have Kendhal and Ausmus, and will be trying for a catcher as well.

Who do you guys think I can wait on and whom should I pull the trigger on with one of these top 4 picks?  The league is big (20 teams) and we keep 40, so I need to make this draft count.

Good job with insight on all prospects so far.  Lets keep this site going strong.

Thanks,
Chris

I don't understand
You rank Iannetta over Martin? Milledge over Markakis? Please clarify. Thanks.

If you need pitching you have to take Cole Hamels. Not even close.

Ooops... wasnt paying attention
Catchers - Martin, Iannetta, Napolli are my top 3.  Like Montero for the future.

OF - Young, Markakis, Quintenin, Either and Milliage.
Like Young too for the future.  I have a good OF so not so concerned.

I'd go
C:  Johjima, Martin, Iannetta, Napoli, Montero and happily "end-up" with Montero if Napoli were taken.

1B:  Agree but none have a lock on 2007 ABs.
2B:  Flipping Uggla and Kendrick is understandable given Uggla's numbers.
SS:  Same but little confidence in Arias.

order questions
Catcher - Johjima deserves to be ranked over everyone on that list. He's already a .300/20HR guy at the position, take the current production.

1B - Loney, Kouz, and Morales are not acceptable at the premier power position in fantasy sports.

OF - After Delmon Young, what kind of player are you looking for? I'm a big HR/SB guy when it comes to OF's. Chris Young and Matt Kemp are likely to be more valuable in fantasy than Markakis, Quentin, and Ethier. Quentin's always been overrated in my book for fantasy purposes and Ethier's ceiling is slightly above-average for an OF. Markakis has the hype and is a good sell high candidate, but I doubt he becomes a perennial 30HR guy and isn't much of a threat on the basepaths. All 3 of those guys are more valuable in real life than fantasy.

I'd rank the OF.. Delmon Young, Chris Young, Lastings Milledge, Matt Kemp, Corey Hart, Nick Markakis.

If you don't value SB's, take Markakis and Quentin higher than Milledge and Kemp.

In Response...
  • With Jeff Clement struggling (or what they say), Johjima might be a good semi long-term pick.
  • I think your right about these 1st baseman.  I have conor jackson and lyle overbay, to lower powered but hitting first basemen.
  • I too like Young, but will probably go with Markakis, after Delmon, then Young.  I have podsednic and gathright (if he hits) for SBs.
Thanks for you're input.

my rankings
I ranked this players by roto value, since league format was unspecified.

C-  R.Martin, Iannetta, Johjima, Montero, Paulino
, Napolli
1B - Loney, Morales
2B - Kendrick, Kinsler, Barfield, Pedroia, Uggla, A.Casilla, Callaspo
3B - Kouzmanoff, Fields
SS - Drew, Tulowitzki, Arias
OF - D.Young, Markakis, C.Young, Quentin, Hart, Milledge, Cabrera, Kemp, Lind, Denorforia, Ethier, A.Jones (plan on a 3-year wait), Bourn, Guzman, F.Lewis, Clevlen.

In light of the rules clarifications...
  • I'd move Paulina ahead of Montero
  • I'd move Uggla ahead of Pedroia
  • Isn't Hanley Ramirez available?
  • I'd consider Markakis #1 in the OF.
  • I'd move Hart down below Kemp, and maybe below Lind.
  • I'd move Ethier up into a "tie" with Quentin.
In one of my SOM leagues (30 teams),I need to draft a catcher this year too.  My situation is worse than yours... I have only Yadier now.  The same cast of characters (minus Montero) will be available to me, and I'm having a hard time deciding how to draft.  I may have a choice between Paulino and Iannetta, and I know that Iannetta's future will be much brighter, but I can compete this year if I just fill my "hole" at catcher.

by BobbyMac on Sep 26, 2006 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks Bobby Mac...
  • Paulino has had a better year, but with all the catchers in PIT (Walker, yeah he might move), Doumit and Paulino, not sure how much he will play.  I think Montero has better power long term.
  • Uggla is above Ped, I think until he shows some signs of getting on base like he is suppose to be able to do.
  • Hanley was available last year and went in our draft.  Last year I got CONNOR JACKSON, MATT CAIN, FIORENTINO, BROXTON AND SOME VETS.
  • I too think Markakis is in the top 3, but over Delmon Young?  I think he may be at #2 in the OF, but I am intrigued by Quintenin and Chris Young...
  • Agreed about Hart.  Kemp will probably play next year, so will Lind.  Hart has been in a logjam of a while in Mil.
Thanks for the thoughts.

Hart...
makes a pretty good roto pick IMO, which is why I initially put him high.  He's not a good defender, but he steals bases and hits homers, and - from everything I can tell - should have the inside line on a starting job in 2007.  The Brewers are an organization with a pretty good plan, IMO.  And Hart has responded well to full-time duty, so I don't think they're going to jerk him around unless he goes into a prolonged slump at some point.

Kemp scares me a little, although he's creamed minor-league pitching.  But with defense being considered, he has to be ahead of Hart.

Longoria
I'd take Longoria at 3B over fields.

I'd laso take Gordon before Longoria, but both are pretty sold prospects.

League Structure
20 teams (40 players per team).
20 teams (40 players per team).
Keeper league, Sim league (APBA).  Stats and players are based on prior year.  So a guy like Timlin was better this year, because his #'s and ability was based on last year.  Players can be drafted if they have a card (APBA).  Players must play 5ip or 10 abs to be eligible to play in the game.

Similar league/situation
I play in a similar league, and was thinking of posting later (our draft isn't until spring) a request for help as far as pitching is concerned.
How would you rank:  Anibal, Billz, Hamels, Loewen, Lester, Sowers, Garza, Hirsch, Tigers Miller, Zumaya, Bonser, Pelfrey?  The others (Verlander, Liriano, Cain) went last year.
Not trying to hijack your diary, you were asking for help on the pitchers as well, correct?

by drwmsu1 on Sep 27, 2006 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Here is mine...
Let me know yours after, but it really all depends on what you have, how long you want to wait and when you draft.  For me, this is how I plan on rating them for my team (I have Cain, Myers, Buerhle and Penn)...
Hamels,Zumaya,Billz,Garza,Pelfrey,Anibal,Hirsch,Miller,Sowers,Lester,Loewen and Bonser...

I know people will debate that, but that's how I rate them on what I need and impact.  I will get a return quickly with guys playing this year (Hamels, Zumaya (future HOF closer), Anibal, then I will with guys like Miller, Humber, Garza and Pelfrey.  Will Garza and Pelfrey be studs, most deff, but for our league I don't want to wait 3 years with out pitching.  I have some good bats and will contend if I can hold other teams from scoring 8 runs a game.

What are your thoughts?

by ChrisRef19 on Sep 27, 2006 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Depends
Obviously, if you are looking at immediate impact, it would be more like:   Sanchez, Zumaya, Sowers, Hamels, Billz.

I am very interested in what others think, but long term, my thinking is something like:

Billz, Hamels, Zoom, Miller, Sanchez, Garza, Sowers, Lester, Pelfrey, Loewen, Hirsch and Bonser.

Hamels
is the best fantasy pitcher here by a mile. Next year he will dominate over a full season. Have you looked at his numbers?

APBA
This is APBA, and their grades are based on the previous seasons stats.  I don't think Hamels grade will be as high as Sanchez, Zumaya or even Sowers.  APBA grades seem to be based on ERA, and Cole's is still in the 4's, I believe.
I know next to nothng about roto, so you may very well be right (if he stays healthy).  I like him very much for the future, but his health questions drop him below Billz for me, I think he is going to be exceptional.

by drwmsu1 on Sep 28, 2006 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions

oh!
I guess I should have asked the format. If it's based solely on this years numbers than Sanchez would win out in every category other than k's. Also, who were you referring to when you said you loved the guy? Hamels or Bilz.

who were you calling exceptional? bilz or hamels or both.

Not clear
Sorry, re-read that and can see the confusion.  I love Billz.  Callis yesterday in his ESPN chat said he likes him long term over Cain.  That speaks volumes to me.
I also love Cole, mind you, but since this is his first injury free season I am a bit leery.  I realize most were freak injuries, but so were Prior's.  A guy is either injury prone or not in my opinion, and until Hamels goes 200IP plus, I will have reservations about him.

Hamels
I can understand your point about Hamels' injury history but I am assuming he will remain relatively healthy. That being the case, I would have to say other than Liriano he is the next best young pitcher out there...... IMO

I sure hope you're right. I have watched them both many times as I'm sure most of the people here have and I have to say I just don't see it. I am not enamored with his stuff like I've been with Cain. As I said, I'll be happy to eat crow if I'm wrong. Thanks!

Yep
Snachez will be a higher rated player then Hamels on the APBA card list.  Hamels will be very good, but this injury thing scares me.  I think I would go with Hamels over Sanchez, but at this point I need anyone and would take either.
