NL Cy Young

With all the talk about the AL and NL MVP it seems the other close race, the NL Cy Young has been a little forgotten.

I think it would be worth a discussion of who should take the award. Thinking back to my Baseball Tonight watching, Carpenter has gotten the most love so far. I'd say Brandon Webb is highly deserving of this years award.

Any one else in the mix? Carlos Zambrano?

It gets pretty thin after that but I'll include a few others as talking points...

definitely webb & carpenter

1-2 in some order. the next two guys on my ballot don't appear on your list--oswalt and arroyo.

no brady penny on the list? i dont neccessarily believe hes been the best pitcher in the NL but he has to be considered i think

Penny has blown

Especially when the Dodgers have needed him. Pitched well in his last outing though but it was against a AAA Cubs line-up.

How can anyone vote for Webb over Carpenter?

Carpenter has better K/9 than Webb, way better H/9, better K/BB, a way lower OPS allowed, 21 fewer stolen bases allowed, lower ERA. Are people seriously voting for him just becuase he has one more win or a few more innings pitched? I'd expect the BBWAA to be that dense, but not a plurality of people here...

there's just more to it than that

webb pitches in a hitter's park, which makes the ERAs close enough that the edge in IP does actually matter. (and while carpenter has mostly nicer peripherals, you forgot to mention the big one where webb is ahead, HR/9.) i still think carpenter is ahead by a bit, but it's not as clear-cut as you make it sound.
