Selecting a Prospect

I just took over a team in a 19 team mixed points league. We are allowed to keep a 5 man minor roster. I have justed traded away Jay Bruce (OF) and Anthony Reyes (P) in a deal that also netted me Humberto Sanchez (P).

My minor roster is now comprised of Andy LaRoche (3B), Troy Tulowitzki (SS), Radhames Liz (P) and sanchez. I now have an empty roster spot to fill and would prefer to use it for a hitter. The players below appear to be the best candidates available to me. I have ranked them in my order of preference which is essentially to get the best hitter available.

  1. Carlos Gonzalez, OF ARI
  2. Kevin Kouzmanoff, 3B CLE
  3. Travis Snider 1B/OF TOR
  4. Colby Rasmus, OF STL
  5. Jacob Ellsbury, OF BOS

I voted for Gonzalez...
Because he is the best prospect.  But another option is to pick up Kouzmanoff now, who surely will be in the majors starting next year, and then you can pick someone up to replace him, by then there will be some guys available from this years draft that would be worth getting.

Gonzalez taken ........
Actually just learned that Gonzalez has been taken already. I'm leaning towards your approach although I already have Zimmerman and Tracy at 3B. But you can't have too many good bats.

I'd take Rasmus then
he seems the cloest to producing in the majors. Though, I really think your trade of Bruce wasn't a good idea.

ditto
I had the same thought about Bruce... not sure what would inspire someone to trade him away, but I hope it was big.  I'd much rather have him than some of the guys you have in your system.

re:
I'd assume he got a MLB player in that deal as well...

Agreed ...
but it's a keeper league and I wouldn't have been able to keep Reyes on the minor roster because of the number of innings he has pitched and I only have 8 MLB keepers. he wouldn't have been one of them. As it was I was able to package Him, Bruce, Heilman and Hermida for Helton and Pierre who will be on my keeper list.

Trade
That still sounds like a terrible deal to me. I think that Bruce and Hermida will both provide a LOT more value over the next few years than either Pierre or Helton. Helton just isn't the player he once was and Pierre has had something of an off year and is almost 30. You got robbed I think.

Keep Bruce, let Reyes walk or keep him as a freshman/sophmore keeper along with Hermida.  Then keep Dejesus and Tracy vice Helton and Pierre.

Sorry But ....
Deal is done - I'm reportintg a fact rather than seeking trde advice. I'm looking for opinions on the players I listed.

Well
I think you put yourself in a bad situation by making the trade. Also, by accidently including Gonzalez (when he's not available) in the poll your stats are going to be unaccurate. I think Rasmus is the only player you listed of the 3 available guys that has chance to be a good major league player, good not great.

I think
Ellsbury is pretty good too but he seems a ways off.

Jacoby Ellsbury
is a leadoff hitter.  He should be up by '08 (earlier if the Sox decide to trade Crisp), and he will be an excellent leadoff hitter.  He needs to become more efficient on the base paths, but he has the potential to become a high .300's OBP guy with at least 30-40 steals and tons of runs.  His lack of power is no reason to let him go.  I would have kept Bruce, but in your situation, Ellsbury is the way to go.

Also, note the Y in his first name.  His name is Jacoby, not Jacob.

hmmm,
not as bad as you made it out to be but I still don't think Sanchez ever becomes better than a #3 in the majors.

That would ...
seem to jive with the ratings that I've seen. My hope is that I won't have to add him to the MLB roster until 2008 or so, at which point we'll have a better handle on his capabilities.

FYI my probable keepers at the moment are: Helton, Pierre, Dunn, Lugo, Quentin, Beckett, Kinsler and one of Bonds, Dejesus or Tracy. I also can keep Zimmerman and Verlander as Rookie/Sophmore keepers. So in reality 40% of my keeper roster is comprised of 2006 rookies.

Question
Are you eligible to take 2006 draftees, or not until the offseason?  If so, you probably have a couple of better options out of those guys (Longoria, Rowell, etc.).  Another guy to potentially look at would be Will Venable; he's probably a bit more of a sleeper than the guys you've listed, but I suspect that he'll be ahead of a bunch of those guys by the time the 2007 draft rolls around.

by Brickhaus on Aug 24, 2006 2:12 PM EDT reply actions

Longoria .....
already selected. Snider is actually a 2006 draft pick. I was looking for a good hitter with a clearer track to MLB. Hence Snider. Rowell or Venable I'm not familiar with. Do you have some info source that I can access.

Just enter the name "Rowell" and you'll get his stats.

He's a big kid with immense power potential.

McCutchen
If he's out there, I'd seriously consider him. He's shown a lot more power than expected, is currently raking in AA (small sample, I know), and should hit for a good average with a lot of steals. Very underrated prospect IMO, especially for fantasy leagues.

by jc3 on Aug 24, 2006 2:19 PM EDT reply actions

McCutchon ....
already drafted. Rasmus is the only hitter in the HQ Top 50 that hasn't been drafted.
