Moyer traded

Jamie Moyer traded to the the Phillies for Andrew Barb and Andrew Baldwin, plus cash.  Baldwin's a 23 year old pitching in A ball , Barb's 21, also in A ball, but a reliever.  I understand trading Moyer, as the Mariner's season is long over and he is a free agent at the end of the year.  But, I don't know much about either of these guys.  Are they anything other than marginal prospects?

Baldwin and Bard
Baldwin is a strike thrower drafted in the 5th round from Oregon State. He got hit hard at low levels in his first 2 years of pro ball, and wasnt ever that ggreat in college, and his merely adequate in the FSL this year.  Doesn't walk folks but is 23, in a-ball and doesn't look like he has the stuff to take on real hitters or be much more than a fringe MLer, if that.

I dont know what Barbs stuff is like but his K-rate is good and his hit and homer (0) rates are great.  Hes racked up Ks in previous years too.  On the downside is a career long reliever (which raises questions) and a-ball releivers in general are iffy and hes been moved very slowly despite being successful.  He also walks a few too many (28 and 5 HBP in 60 innings), not a scary amount but just higher than ideal

Decent haul for Moyer

barb being moved slowly
is not his fault, but can be attributed to the organization's philosophy when dealing with monor leaguers.  throughout the ed wade era, prospects were dealt with using kid gloves.  chase utley spent 3 seasons at AAA.  plus another 2 seasons at the major league level until becoming the starting second baseman.

ryan howard hit 48 homeruns in 2004 between AA, AAA, and the majors.  what happened in 2005?  he started the year in AAA, got a 10 game trial in may in which he hit below the mendoza line, following which he was sent down.  he was finally called up in june after jim thome was put on the disabled list, and then went on to win rookie of the year.

you cannot hold this against barb.  he is a solid prospect, and should probobly be major league ready next year if started in AA.

Moyer
Moyer will replace the struggling Scott  Mathieson in the rotation. I guess this a good trade for the Phillies. This may help this year and Moyer is back with Gillick.

wild card
they've won more games than they meant to the last 3 weeks, so now they have to pretend they're in serious contention. which, actually, i guess they are, due to the general mediocrity of the NL. they came into today 2.5 games back of the reds.

wild card

Draft picks
Do teams get draft pick compensation if a Type A retires?

What Did They Lose
I mean both these guys are marginal prospects.  If Moyer helps them down the stretch than that's more than either would have done.  I doubt they both even make the majors.  Low Risk, High reward move.

I'd say at best
its a low risk, medium reward move.

reward, or lack thereof
I'd call it low-risk, zero reward.  Moyer is done.  At this point he's a warm body to fill a slot, nothing more.  That's not something you give up any sort of prospect, even grade C ones like this, to get.

Reward
He's a warm body that is a huge upgrade over the nags that the Phillies have been running out there. In that respect, he will help the team, and you can give up a grade C prospect and a 23 y/o A-baller to get him.

NL
Moving to the NL can only help him.  I'm assuming that if he can put up an under 5 ERA he'd be better than whoever they currently have number 5 in their rotation.
Rios is the next Juan Gonzales, thats right, I said it.
