Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Jose Reyes

Just an interesting(well, interesting to me) observation, which someone may or may not have already commented on:

After hitting three homeruns today, Reyes is now on pace to eclipse the 20-homer mark, as well as the 20-double and 20-triple mark.  A "triple 20", or whatever you want to call it.

I did a little research, and, apparently, only four men in history have ever done this.

George Brett, in 1979.
Willie Mays, in 1957.
Jeff Heath, in 1941
Jim Bottomley, in 1928.

It may be worth noting that three of those four are in the Hall of Fame.

MVP?
Say he finishes strong...

140 R 32 2B 20 HR 80 RBI 70 SB .300/.355/.500

Is he an MVP candidate? People say Beltran, but the Mets go as Reyes goes.

Agree
Over at Fake Teams, the MVP thing was mentioned also.

I have little doubt Reyes is the most valauble SS in New York this year.

oh really
Reyes: .299/.354/.496
Jeter: .343/.418/.484

Cool
Most of the Yankees homers talk about Jeter as MVP and include his intangibles.

I'd still take Reyes over Jeter.

oh i see
so can i call you a mets homer when all the stats point to Jeter over Reyes for this year? ;)

Reyes
I think that his defense and basestealing contributions close the gap a little, as does the fact that Reyes plays in a less hitter friendly environment, but overall, I do think Jeter still comes out on top.

Still, it's quite a remarkable opportunity Reyes has here.  It certainly shows what a truly gifted player he is, and what a unique skillset he has at his disposal.

Defense, baserunning
Jeter has a Rate2 of 104 and 9 errors. Reyes has a Rate2 of 96 and 10 errors. Looking at those #'s, Reyes' defense does not close the gap at all, quite the contrary.

Reyes may have more raw speed and higher SB numbers, but Jeter is a great baserunner who has stolen 26/29 this year.

I will agree that Reyes has slightly more impact as a baserunner, but I would say the defense and baserunning have pretty much cancel each other out, which leaves Jeter's huge OBP, VORP, and WARP3 (10.3-6.9) leads to show who's had the better year. It's not really that close to be honest.

Jeter
He would be a legit MVP candidate were it not for Ortiz.

WPA
Ortiz 5.77
Papelbon 4.40
Dye 4.25
Jeter 4.16

He's having a better year than Reyes. That isn't a slight against Reyes at all, I'm a Mets fan and absolutely love him.

Jeter is in his prime and Reyes is 23 so you could certainly make the case Reyes is having a more impressive season, but not a better one.

If you want to argue Ortiz....
Then you have to take into account that while Ortiz is nails in the crunch - the overall numbers do not give him much of an advantage, if any, over Travis Hafner and if both the Red Sox and the Indians miss the playoffs - Hafner is as good a candidate as Ortiz.  I think that Jeter will win this year and there will be enough people that look at Ortiz and Hafner as so comparable that some votes might get split.

perhaps you forgot...
a guy named Pujols in StL who is the MVP easily.

I agree
Reyes is quickly becoming very well known with his production this season.  He continues this and he'll be stealing quite a few votes/support from Albert at this time next year tho....

Remember this thread?
Just a few short months ago, the pessimism is amazing:

Good thing that wasn't titled "Is there any hope for Jose Reyes?"

Best SS
One could make the argument, at age 23, he's the best SS/leadoff hitter in the game. You might not win said argument, but that it could be made with a straight face is a testament to El Profesor's development.

He's also SO very fun to watch.

CBP....
And what if Reyes could play 81 games a year at CBP? And what if Beltran/Delgado/Wright and the rest could play 81 games per year at CBP? Given the difference in the two parks it's not a very valid comparison...

I wonder how his extra bases numbers look now
Way back about a month into the season, I did a little number crunching and saw that Reyes was taking the extra base on an inordinate number of hits (i.e. first to third on a single, first to home on a double).

I wonder how the numbers look now.  They're bound to have come down, since he was at something like 86% extra bases taken, but it would be interesting to see if some kind of trend has held up.
