Rangers Trade

Carlos Lee to the rangers along with Nelson Cruz and a player to be named later.  The Strangers give up Kevin Mench, Coco Cordero, Lance Nix.  How good is Nelson Cruz?????????  Can this possibly be a win for the Rangers?  I am hoping they can sign Carlos Lee.  Is Nelson Cruz the answer in Center Field the Rangers have been looking for?

Fair trade
I think the Brewers maybe could've gotten more, but they got a good replacement bat in Mench and a good power bullpen arm in Cordero.  Not sure if Nix fits into their plans at all.

Not sure...
Lee - 30 y/o
102g, .286avg, 28hr, 81rbi, .347obp, .549 slug
Mench - 28 - y/o
87g, .284avg, 12hr, 50rbi, .338obp, .459 slug

Looking at these two, not sure if this is an even trade.  Rangers got a pretty good deal.  Mench is 2 year younger, but doesnt produce the power Lee does.  Didnt see the contract Mench had, but looks like the rangers got the deal.

Why Mench
What about Corey Hart he deserves some playing time.

by novaoakland on Jul 28, 2006 11:46 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

mench
i beleive mench was a doug melvin draftee.  being a ranger fan for as long as ive lived, you have seen mench go on great runs at the plate.  you have also seen him put up great numbers in limited plate appearences throughout his career.  there is some definate upside still with mench, but he is running out of time to prove he can do it.  we, in texas, have all been waiting for mench to put up a .300 30 homer year because he has tempted us many times.  i think a change of scenery can only help him.

Wait... wha?
I think the Brewers could've gotten more too.  I'd think it were a more fair trade if Cruz hadn't gotten thrown in.

Cruz is a big power hitter who's in the prime of his career.  He's doing a pretty good number on the PCL this year (it's a hitters' league, but Nashville is also one of the most extreme pitchers' parks in baseball, which balances the effect), and can even run a bit.  He might only have 3-4 good years in him since he's already 27, but that's not too bad for a short- or mid-term cheap solution in an outfield corner.

Overall, a very good trade from the Rangers' perspective.  They got a top slugger and another good-though-unproven one for some stuff they didn't need.

I'm not entirely sure why the Brewers would do this.  I thought Cordero had completely sucked this year, but his peripherals are all pretty good, so the high ERA appears to be largely bad luck.  Still, he's 31 and just a RP.  He'll help fix the bullpen issues for the next couple years, perhaps helping a push for contention next year, but I'm not thrilled about him being the best player acquired for an elite slugger.

Mench is pretty good but nothing too special for a corner OF.  Hopefully this means that Hart will be allowed to play in one of the corners full-time now, with Mench as Jenkins-injury/Hart-sucking insurance.  Dumping Jenkins somewhere and playing Mench full-time would be lovely as well.

I like the Nix acquisition the best, which says something...  He's just 25 and was at one point in the recent past a super prospect, though he was rushed pretty badly.  He's a good guy to take a flier on, since I believe he's a real CF defensively (an improvement over the Gross/Clark combo in that department), and if he can rediscover some part of his stroke he could be a medium-term fix in center.

As a Brewers fan, though, I was really hoping for more young elite talent, particularly on the pitching side (maybe the Hughes rumors got my hopes up too far).  Instead they got some spare parts and patches for areas of weakness, which is good, but I guess I'm not sure that the core they have will be enough to make them a dominant force.  Lee was the one big chip that they could use to get something to really put them over the top for the 2007-2010 contention years, and they didn't use him to get that.  Not a terrible trade, but I'm not thrilled with it either.

well
dont get your hopes up on nix. the rangers have never had a cf'er and for them to bury nix in the minors isnt a good sign. cordero had a terrible first 2 weeks for the rangers and has been real solid ever since except for the recent game against the yanks.  he did however just sign a big deal with the rangers last year though.  i thought cruz was 26 is he not?

by TexasHeat on Jul 28, 2006 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

26
Ah, yes, 26.  Thought he was 26 last year.  My point stands though.  I liked him a lot, hope he has a nice career in Texas.

Cruz
Cruz hit his 20th homer last night and his hitting .302. The Rangers have no one signed for next year in the OF, so maybe Cruz can start somewhere in the Rangers OF. Is he a better long-term fantasy player than Choo?

Underwhelmed
I thought the Brewers could have gotten a lot more, and the trade doesn't really seem to play to what they need. They got two outfielders, which is great, but Corey Hart is still blocked. They got Cordero, but they already have a decent bullpen, and he's making $4M this year, so he's not exactly cheap. Does anyone know what his contract status is (is he on the books for next year too)?

Not sure if I really like the trade from the Rangers side either.

Rangers Part
Just to clarify, I'm unsure about the Rangers side because I'm not sure if Lee will really be that much better than Mench down the stretch, and I'm always leery of them trading away proven arms (like Cordero, despite his troubles this year) because of their inability to get some at the ML level.

cordero

what?
Decent bullpen? You obviously haven't been following the Brewers lately.

a weird trade
to me, lee looks like only an incremental upgrade over mench. it's entirely possible that they'll swap stat lines from here until the end of the season because of the disparity between the leagues. and lee is a free agent, whereas mench is (i think) still in arbitration and one year away from FA.

i guess in cordero and nix they didn't give up much of value, although cordero could always "find" himself... maybe he'll even be the brewers closer with turnbow imploding recently. cruz i really like, if only because the A's gave him away for keith freaking ginter and all he's done since then is rake. i don't think his future is in center field, though (and didn't texas send their CF to the all-star game anyway?).

from the milwaukee perspective, i guess nix gives them an alternative (and possible platoon partner) to brady clark, but he's hitting just 269/323/430 in AAA and he's not young any more. i guess dave krynzel also has had a pretty terrible year, so maybe they needed to do something like this. still, i sort of feel like the brewers gave up the two best players in this trade, but not by so much that it matters one way or the other.

all in all this trade makes me feel empty inside.

Two Corderos, better than one?
According to Rotowire as posted on Yahoo, Rangers included Julian, P, in A-.

Brewers
Im just curious but if i was a brewers fan, I would not like this trade at all. I would rather have some solid younger players(preferably pitchers) to go with my core of young players. I would rather have a top pitching prospect. What is everyone else thoughts? I understand they are contending this year but i really dont see this as an upgrade.

by FishHead on Jul 28, 2006 12:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

agreed
when i heard the trade break i could not believe that i didn't read the name danks, diamond or volquez in the "getting back" column

its becoming pretty amazing how tightly teams are clutching onto their top prospects nowadays...especially pitching prospects...definitely makes sense though, a good or even great young player is by FAR the most valuable commodity in baseball...one could make the case that david wright is more valuable than albert pujols and scott kazmir moreso than johan santana...

needs
Seems to me the Rangers have bullpen issues, not scoring isues. I think they needed arms more than a bat. Lee is good, but you cant bludgeon your way to a divison title.

by Robinson Checo on Jul 28, 2006 12:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

ranger bats
go look again at their bats.  blalock is terrible and young's bat is a little over rated and gary mathews jr and derossa cant keep this up forever and tex is having an off year.  kinsler is a rookie so its hard to know what your going to get every day.  the pitching has been mediocre which is great for texas so with good hitting they could win this division.

by TexasHeat on Jul 28, 2006 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also
wilkerson has also been a big dissapointment in texas although he is leading the rangers with 15 bombs. YUCK  read that again, 15 bombs leads the freaking rangers.

Well
considering what relievers are going for in the trade market, Coco is probably up there in terms of value due to his ability to close.

I think this is a stupid trade for the Rangers. They weaken their pen and while Lee is clearly the best player available, is he the type of player that will carry your team? They give up a couple of underachievers who are younger and may end up producing more in the long run.

CRUZ
Showalter just said that cruz is going to be starting for the rangers and playing right field tomorrow night.  so they must really like him.

Soriano and other big name players on the block
How does this trade affect Soriano's trade value?  Since Milwaukee got some so-so players in return for C. Lee, is Jim Bowden forced to lower his demands for Soriano?  Same with Tejada, Abreu, Maddux, and other available players.

I hope so, but I don't see a Soriano trade happening until the 31st, since Bowden will hold off until he sees some top prospects thrown his way.

Cordero to ATL?
OK, so this is from WAY out in left field, but could the brewers acquiring Cordero be a temporary thing?  Cordero to ATL for Betemit?  Betemit would be a nice, young, fairly cheap addition to their infield and Cirillo isn't getting any younger.

Just a thought.

by scstrato on Jul 28, 2006 1:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Betemit
I don't see how the Braves can part with Betemit.  I don't buy the rumors.  Giles and C.Jones are so fragile, that they need Betemit.  There really aren't any replacements for him either...

by dbimberg on Jul 28, 2006 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Braun
Ryan Braun. The Brewers IF is already STACKED (Koskie when he returns, Hall, Hardy for next year, Fielder, Weeks) and they really love Braun's bat at 3B. They won't be acquiring Betemit.

This might work out...
...for both teams.

While I could have seen the Brewers getting more for Carlos Lee, perhaps they were finding that teams were not willing to part with more.

Also, this does still allow the Brewers to attempt to contend THIS YEAR, while not subjecting themselves to the loss of Lee after the season.  Overall, I like this from the Brewers even though I was hoping for Lee to be traded to the Twins.

For the Rangers, it all depends on how Lee does and if they can resign him.

finaly

 someone freed Nelson Cruz.

that guy would never get a chance and i never really understood why he's a terrific prospect imo powr/aver/steals

Lee
should put up ridiculous numbers in the Texas air. The disparity between the AL and NL only really affects pitchers. I wouldn't be surprised to see Lee eclipse 46 homers and actually increase his average.

by rmande09 on Jul 28, 2006 1:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well
Texas power outage is really intriguing this season but I agree this will boost Lee. If anyone wins this deal, it is hands down Lee.

Lee used to be in the AL so the transition shouldn't hurt him.

Nelson Cruz
Can someone tell me more about Nelson. Cruz. As a ranger fan, at first glance he kind of reminds me of Jason Botts
