Reds Top 20 PRE-SEASON Prospects

Elizardo Ramirez

Top 20 PRE-SEASON Reds Prospects in Review

This is the PRE-SEASON list. That means it was generated BEFORE THE SEASON STARTED and that the grades were PRE-SEASON. Anyone complaining about the grades based on 2006 performance will be smacked up the side of the head with a Gookie Dawkins autographed bat.

1) Homer Bailey, RHP, Grade B+
Is 4-0, 0.75 in four starts since being promoted to Double-A Chattanooga. On a real roll right now. Combination of plus stuff and improved command makes him a dominator.

2) Travis Wood, LHP, Grade B
6-2, 4.14 in 18 starts for Class A Dayton, 88/37 K/BB in 87 innings, 68 hits allowed. Holding his own, good K/IP mark.

3) Jay Bruce, OF, Grade B
Hitting .315/.383/.563 in 90 games for Dayton, with 36 doubles and 13 homers and 14 steals. Breakout campaign establishing him as one of the best outfield prospects in the game.

4) B.J. Szymanski, OF, B-
Hitting .238/.315/.428 in 86 games for Dayton, 18 steals and 13 homers. Power and speed, but horrible contact problems as shown by 123 strikeouts.

5) Phil Dumatrait, LHP, B-
Combined 6-7, 3.99 in 17 starts combined between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville. 68/32 K/BB in 90 innings isn't that good. Needs more time in the minors.

6) Chris Denorfia, OF, C+
Hitting .347/.409/.454 with 14 steals for Louisville. Replacing the traded Austin Kearns in the Reds outfield. 7-for-22 (.318)  so far.

7) Tyler Pelland, LHP, C+
5-3, 3.46 ERA in 19 starts for Chattanooga, 72/58 K/BB in 96 innings, 100 hits allowed. Good ERA but his components aren't that hot. Note too-high walk rate. Still an interesting pitcher.

8) Joey Votto, 1B, C+
Hitting .324/.401/.582 for Chattanooga, much better than last year. Has even stolen 15 bases. Overall numbers have revived his prospect status. Move him well up the list.

9) Justin Germano, RHP, C+
3.93 ERA in 17 starts for Louisville, 64/21 K/BB in 110 innings. Classic finesse strike thrower.

10) Zach Ward, RHP, C+
7-0, 2.45 in 16 starts for Dayton, 91/29 K/BB in 103 innings, just 67 hits and 2 homers allowed. Looks good!

11) Sam Lecure, RHP, C+
3.56 ERA, 81/27 K/BB in 91 innings for Class A Sarasota. Solid all-around performance but not spectacular.

12) Bobby Basham, RHP, C+
Traded to San Diego, on the DL at Double-A Mobile.

13) Adam Rosales, SS, C+
Combined .240/.327/.404 in 59 games between Dayton and Sarasota. Nothing to get really excited about there.

14) Jeff Stevens, RHP, C+
Traded to the Indians system. Combined 4.96 ERA and 62/26 K/BB between Dayton and Lake County. Decent strikeout rate but not much else.

15) William Bergolla, 2B, C
Hitting .254/.285/.333 in 74 games for Louisville. Performance is inadequate right now to deserve a full shot in the majors.

16) Travis Chick, RHP, C
Traded to Seattle. 5-5, 4.37 in 18 starts combined between Chattanooga and Double-A San Antonio. A fair prospect, nothing more.

17) Elizardo Ramirez, RHP, C
3-6, 4.16 in 14 starts for the Reds, 55/19 K/BB in 84 innings. This is in line with expectation.

18) Rafael Gonzalez, RHP, C
Just activated from extended spring, has pitched 15 innings for Billings in the Pioneer League, allowing 12 hits and six runs. Sample too small to mean much.

19) James Avery, RHP, C
5-6, 5.31 in 18 starts for Sarasota, 57/34 K/BB in 88 innings, 95 hits and 11 homers allowed. Components are not impressive and his status has slipped.

20) Miguel Perez, C, C
Hitting .251/.300/.319 in 77 games for Chattanooga. Not much pop, low OBP, won't hit enough to be a regular without dramatic improvement.

Comment:
Bailey and Bruce are an outstanding 1-2 prospect combination. Votto's resurgence is a good thing to see, and I still like Travis Wood. Otherwise the system seems to lack some depth, with several of the sleeper prospects not panning out this year.

Gookie Dawkins bat is a poor choice...
considering it never could hit anything hard enough to hurt something :)

Travis Wood
I'd like Wood a lot more if his FB/GB ratio were more appealing, but as it is it's not a particularly good sign for when he gets to higher levels.

Power pitcher with a fair number of walks and a lot of flyballs? I can't think of a good comp off the top of my head, but I do know that it sounds like the profile of a guy I'd want nowhere near GAB.

Edwin Encarnacion
John,

How do you project Encarnacion in a couple of years?  Do you see him developing more power?

by jeffersonian27 on Jul 17, 2006 4:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Zach Ward and Miguel Perez
Zach Ward has a very nice GB/FB ratio, better than 3:1.

Miguel Perez has been swinging a hot bat lately, and I really hope he can keep it up.

Johnny Cueto
John, where would Cueto fit into this list now and do you have any thoughts on him?  Looks like his last start at Sarasota was better than the first 2.  He goes again tonight so we'll see if he's starting to make the adjustment or if his last start was a facade.

Question about rankings
John, you have Elizardo Ramirez ranked a C, and say his 4.16 ERA and 55/19 K/BB are in line with what's expected.  This production seems quite a bit better than what you usually have as a C prospect, and more of a B-range type, particularly when you consider his home park.  Not to nitpick, it just seems a bit off, as you say that a B prospect projects as a major league regular, and a 4.16 ERA is a pretty decent starting pitcher.

Yep...
You stole my thunder, I was about to ask the same thing.

So now I'm just backing you up.

PRE-SEASON
This was the PRE-SEASON LIST.

I hereby whack you with a Gookie Dawkins bat.

by John Sickels on Jul 17, 2006 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pre-season
I understand it's pre-season, but you said that his production has been in line with his rating/expectations, and it seemed like awfully high expectations for a C prospect.  I'm just surprised that you expected this kind of production out of a C prospect.

I understand
OK, I understand what you're saying now. And you're probably right. It was sloppy writing.

I plead sickness. I wrote this post while running a fever of 102 degrees. Been sick as a dog the last couple of days.

Sorry
Sorry if I was a bit aggressive there, it just confused me a bit.  Thanks for answering the question and hope you feel better!

by MontrealMets on Jul 18, 2006 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no prob
No, you asked a legitimate question. You weren't too aggressive. It was poor writing on my part.

I feel better today. The fever is gone. I still have muscle aches and am very tired, but I can concentrate much better compared to Sunday or Monday.

C pitching prospects
shouldn't be expected to put up a low 4 ERA in a hitter's park with an awful D?  I thought it was an odd thing to say as well.

Come on, you guys
That's only been written on every single team review so far that John's posted.

4.04 ERA at home
His overall ERA is a lot better than a lot of the supposed up-and-coming rookies-- and vets, too.

wow
you look at this system, aside from like the top 3, it sucks.
Shut up. No one likes you.

Joey Votto
Joey Votto sure does suck with his 19hrs 1000 ops.,and future games apperance. He is a top 50 prospect in all of baseball.

by WayneTheMan on Jul 17, 2006 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think votto's in the top 3
bailey / bruce is among the best 1-2 prospect punches in the majors right now.  then i think votto's #3 after them, then maybe wood, and... that's about it.

by wily mo on Jul 17, 2006 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We'll see
Probably.  I actually had him ranked as a top 50 prospect after the 2004 season, but he took a real hit last year.  I suspect he'll make it onto the back end of the community top 50...

look again
Homer Bailey
Jay Bruce
Joey Votto
Travis Wood
Johnny Cueto
Zach Ward
Chris Denorfia
Elizardo Ramirez

Yeah...aside from the top 3 it sucks...
Wait a second isnt Ramirez pitching quite well in the Majors as a 23 year old? Wasnt Denorfia leading the International League in hitting before he got called up? Zach Ward has a 2.45 ERA for Dayton and a 3.31-1 GB-FB ratio. Man, really horrible.

Denorfia
I like Denorfia; I think he'll be a solid ML player.  Not many HRs, but lots of doubles, and some solid defense.  A very valuable type player.

That said, someone who is 26 years old doesn't belong anywhere near a "prospect" list.

by sidnancy on Jul 18, 2006 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

2004 Redux?
Substitute Bobby Basham, Richie Gardner and Thomas Pauly in there and that list looks a lot like the 2004 version.

by jmcclain19 on Jul 18, 2006 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Others Too
Zach Ward, Johnny Cueto and some of the recent 2006 draft picks will make this system look a lot better.

by WayneTheMan on Jul 17, 2006 8:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Ward
is absolutely dominating.  Cueto had a great start tonight.. final line was 5.2 IP 3 H 2 R 8 K 1 BB 1 HR.

Add in Drew Stubbs, Sean Watson, and some of the other 2006 picks - and guys who haven't even made it over to the states yet like Wirfin Obispo who's being hyped - the system isn't as bad as it looks.

Its still not great by any means, it thins out fairly quick.. but its actually much improved.

wha????
Waiting for Travis Buck

Krivsky IQ test
In carryin out negotiations, the correct answer to the first offer is:

1)YEA BAW

2)duh...ok

3)WHAT THA -

The best way to acquire a good middle reliever in order to help a contending team is to:

1)Cut the guts out of the rest of the roster.

2)trade moderate level prospects

3)Do #2, but be open to the fact that having a beer sloggin, hot dog eatin contest during a game and pickin someone in the stands 7 rows, 5 seats down from the winner has worked for some teams (Atlanta -Ray) since the whole position is so frickin erratic and pot-luck driven.

If you just gotta do something like busting your head against the wall, the what you SHOULD do is:

1)Take a good running start, and just pile-drive right into it.

2)Sort of tap the wall with your head and say to yourself "dern, that smarts"

3)are you kidding? noone HAS to bust their head against a wall

Scores: 3 -Krivsky's score (dummer than a pile of bricks)
        4-7 normal
8-9 can run any team BUT the Reds  (even the Royals)

let me just clear my throat, eh hum:
Scott Hatteberg
Bronson Arroyo
Dave Ross
Brandon Phillips

even if the recent trade turns out 3 times worse than it looked, the good outweighs the bad, by a long shot

by TheBlues on Jul 19, 2006 3:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it does, but...
Hatteberg- 3.8 WARP3
Ross- 4.0 WARP3
Phillips 3.6 WARP3
___
11.4 WARP3

Kearns- 6.9 WARP3
Lopez- 4.0 WAPR3
_
____
10.9 WARP3

it's close.  and obviously i didn't include Majewski, Bray, or Arroyo here, I'm just illustrating a point.

by limozeen on Jul 19, 2006 3:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

More throat clearing
Hatteberg:  As a 36 year old, having by far the best year of his career.  Don't expect it to continue.

Arroyo:  All of his component stats are similar to last year.  Maybe a little lucky?

Ross:  Far and away the most he's ever played; he may or may not be this good.

Phillips:  He's not as good as he was in April or June.  Look at his May stats, and accept that as his true talent level.

Krivsky gave up nothing for Hatteberg, Ross, and Phillips - like Mays, McCracken, and Womack, he was just throwing stuff at the wall to see what would stick.  If Arroyo stays this good, I'll give him credit, but I think Arroyo may just be (as I said) lucky this year.

by sidnancy on Jul 19, 2006 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Whither Thomas Pauly?
He hasn't pitched all year... injured?  Retired?
