OTHER Teams' Drafts

If someone is really pleased with their favorite team's draft, it is common to discount that person's opinion on the grounds that they are biased.  So I am curious, which teams' drafts really impressed you, EXCLUDING the draft of your favorite team?

I am pretty impressed with the Nationals' draft and the Orioles' draft.  I liked the job Baltimore did last year, so it doesn't surprise me that they put in a strong effort again, but Washington?  Honestly, any time they don't shoot themselves in the foot, I am astonished.

I loved the Nats draft.
I mentioned this in the open draft thread but an ownership group has made all the difference in the world for that organization.  Assuming that they sign the majority of thier picks and dismantle the big club this summer the organization might be on the right track.

My favorites
I liked what the Dodgers did, picking up some great pitchers (do they really need any more?!)

Also, diamondsbacks picked up 2 very good pitchers, both relatively polished.  Brett Anderson was huge for them, imho

And even tho I'm a Sox fan, I like the risks they took in the later rounds, with belt, Craft, Anderson, Laporta, and Snyder

Yes they do. Outside of billingsley and Elbert, they are running short on high ceiling arms. With Morris and Kershaw they just restocked their supply. And it would be gravy if they can sign alex white.

Everyone likes Morris...
I bet his arm fall off within two years.  He throws extremely across his body.  And his stats vs TN community college competition is a joke.

His arm
might fall off, but his stuff is still sick.  As someone who followed him all year (since he was a D+F candidate), I thought BA may have underrated him  a bit even at 27.

his arm
Logan White had a chat today and was asked that question.

6:06 pm Can you describe your thoughts on Bryan Morris' mechanics and delivery? I've heard everything from throwing across his body to "unorthodox". Will the Dodgers need to rework his delivery?

laguest:6:07 pm No, we won't. Pitchers throwing across their body isn't much of a red flag for me, as long as the arm works good and they're loose and easy. It's usually a minor adjustment. As for Bryan, I think he has a very good front side, outstanding arm action, good balance, a tremendously quick arm and he has great extension and good finish to all his pitches.

Heh
Heh, I didn't really mean it seriously.  It was sort of a "those guys are stacked and now they have more!" sort of comment.  I would never fault a team with tons of pitching prospects for taking more (as evidenced by my saying that I loved the Dodgers draft)

Yankees
For a draft of mostly college guys I was extremely pleased with the Yankees draft. I love guys like Chamberlain and Betances, as well as power arms like Norton and Melancon

rebuilding
I thought they wasted their first pick so they started near the bottom of my list. By the end of the day, however, they finished near the top. They (and the Red Sox, to a lessrer extent) really appear to be learning how to use their financial flexibility to their advantage in the later rounds.

Baltimore
I think drafting both Rowell and Beato in the same draft would basically lock up an impressive draft resume. But Ryan Adams and Zachary Britton just add icing on the cake. Outstanding draft.

I liked...
...Detroit, Los Angeles (the Dodgers, not the fake LA team), Boston, and Cleveland (in no particular order).

I'm a Pirate fan, and whether you throw out my opinion or not, our draft sucked.  Ed Creech might as well print "Destroyer of Hopes" on his business cards.

Pirates
Actually, the Pirates made an excellent first pick when they took Brad Lincoln.  Dodger scouting director Logan White thought Lincoln was the best pitcher in the draft, better than the more-hyped Andrew Miller.  But after Lincoln, I agree the Pirates' draft was pretty bleak.

Can anybody
voice their opinion on the A's draft? I want to hear what the "unbiased" opinion thinks.

Oakland
Well, when your first pick doesn't come till #66 overall, you are starting off in a pretty big hole, but I think the A's did well with the Cahill and Sulentic picks.  On talent, Chad Lee is good value in the 4th round, but I am not sure it was wise to take him given his injury status.  If A's doctors examined him before the draft and signed off on him, it might be okay.  There were probably superior options in the 5th round than Jermaine Mitchell, but the A's seem to be gambling on his tools, which is un-A's like, but the gamble could pay off.  I don't know if the A's took anybody in late rounds with top round talent who fell because of signability, but they should have done that.  With not having a first round pick to pay this year, they probably should have taken somebody like Lars Anderson or Matt LaPorta after the 10th round and resolved to pay whatever it would take to get the guy signed.

My favorites are, in no real order:
Dodgers
Nationals
Orioles
Diamonbacks
Indians

With my own Red Sox in there as well.

I'm glad to see others liked the Indians' draft!
Hello everyone,

I'm glad to see others liked the Indians' draft. :-)

At first, I wasn't sure if I liked it, but the more I read about the players they got and the fact that they didn't have a 1st-Rd. pick, I think this group could be a good group, hopefully better than the 1999 draft (the last time the Indians didn't have a 1st Rder. and chose Will Hartley, a catcher, with their 1st pick.  He retired within two years after being picked) and the 2001 draft (made up of many high-potential HS picks like Denham, Dittler, Martin, and Foley, and praised by many, but virtually none of them turning out as projected to this point.)

Take care and have a great day!

The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
