Cubs draft

I was the mock Cubs scouting director, so I was curious to see who they'd take in the real draft. When the pick was announced, I was a bit perplexed. I'd never heard of Tyler Colvin.

Sure enough, as I searched through BA's first round draftracker, he was nowhere to be found. Finally, I managed to locate him on BA's top 200 prospects list, all the way at #170.

Any thoughts on this? I took Bill Rowell(who ended up going 9th to the Orioles), by the way.

I'm impressed, I didn't think the Cubs had it in them to grab a guy like him.

I think BA has him considerably underrated. He's got nice tools and could develop into a do-everything center fielder type.

I should note

If somebody else takes Jeff Samardzija before the Cubs can get to him in round 5, they are going to be PISSED.

I hope somebody else takes him. Northern pitchers, to quote Anchorman, is a baaaaad choice.

Of course

If the Cubs take Samardzija and can't lure him away from football(which is not only possible but arguably likely), it will be an even bigger disaster.

I think Cubs fans' only hope is that this turns out to be as big a dud of a draft class as some think.

My assumption

I'm guessing that the Cubs are going to give it their best shot, especially as they most likely cut a deal with Colvin to save a few bucks.

I wonder how much it's going to take to sign Samardzija. I can't see it being less than $3 million and I could certainly see it being more than that. Anything less and there wouldn't be much of a reason for him to sign and it'd be a waste of a pick for the Cubs, probably a bad idea given their lack of early selections.

I tend to agree with HuskerBob though. There's an awful lot to work through with Samardzija even after the matter of signing him.

Wow...

Colvin put up unimpressive numbers in college and with someone like Drabek sitting there, I don't know wtf they were thinking.

But to expect competence from the Cubs nowadays was pretty stupid of me anyway.

Hm...

Well I saw this years numbers, and the Cubs are putting a TON of stock into this years numbers for this guy. Luckily he's still pretty young, and has some room to grow on a decent frame.
