John's Minnesota Twins Real-Time Shadow Draft

I will be doing a "Shadow Draft" for my favorite team, the Twins, in real time. I have done this every year for more than ten years now, but this year I will be doing it here. THIS IS NOT THE REAL TWINS DRAFT, this is who I would pick.
2006 Twins Shadow Draft
1) Lars Anderson, 1B, Jesuit HS, Fair Oaks, CA
2) Matt Sulentic, OF, Hillcrest HS, Dallas, TX
3) Tyler Robertson, LHP, Bella Vista HS, Citrus Heights, CA
4) Jordan Newton, C, Western Kentucky University
4) Garrett Olson, 3B, Franklin Pierce College
5) Dustin Richardson, LHP, Texas Tech
6) Billy Muldowney, RHP, University of Pittsburgh
7) Steve Singleton, SS, University of San Diego
8) Todric Johnson, OF, Southern Mississippi University
9) Justin Fuller, SS, Lewis-Clark State (Idaho)
10) Ricky Ibarz, LHP, University of Texas-Pan American
11) Nick Akins, SS, Los Angeles
12) Orlando Rosales, OF, University of Tampa
13) Aaron Senne, LHP, Mayo HS, Rochester, MN
14) Jeff Manship, RHP, Notre Dame
That concludes the real time portion of the Shadow Draft.

Here are the real Twins picks. Which group do you think is better?
1) Chris Parmelee, OF, Chino Hills HS, CA
2) William Benson, OF, Joliet Catholic HS, IL
3) Tyler Robertson, Bella Vista HS, CA
4) Whit Robbins, 1B, Georgia Tech
4) Garrett Olson, 3B, Franklin Pierce
5) Devin sheperd, OF, Oxnard HS, CA
6) Jeff Christy, C, University of Nebraska
7) Jon Waltenburg, LHP, Henry Str HS
8) Brian Dinkelman, McKendree Col
9) Sean Land, LHP, University of Kansas
10) Jared Mitchell, OF, Westgate HS
11) Steve Singleton, SS, University of San Diego
12) Kevin Harrington, OF, Royal HS
13) Aaron Senne, LHP, Mayo HS
14) Jeff Manship, RHP, Notre Dame

Note how the real Twins drafted Steve Singleton four rounds after my Shadow Twins.

john a little of topic
is kubel up to stay for good now? hes hitting decent now

by krgrecw on Jun 6, 2006 1:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

kubel
It would be nice if Kubel was up to stay, but it has more to do with the short leash he will be inevitably be put on by Gardenhire until he can establish that he's an all-glove, no-hit utility middle infielder.

finally found this spot
John, we exchanged e-mails about Mauer/Prior a few years ago. Was the draft on a Saturday that year - because I remember being at work alone while we e-mailed back and forth.

I may have been wrong about Mauer, but I still like Prior more (and maybe Texeria). But, until Prior is healthy, I'm keeping my username.

Why the difference of opinion between you and the Twins on their pick?

Also, why are the Twins so highly regarded? Check their roster for players that they actually drafted and developed (other than Mauer, not one is certainly a MLB caliber player). Indeed, I'm hard pressed to name more than Mauer from the last 7 drafts that are definitely MLB quality. Lots of potential, little actual results. The core of players that took them to division championships were all drafted long ago, or were acquired via trade.

Last Seven Drafts
I think when you look at the seven most recent drafts, most teams who draft high school players are still looking for proven results. The Twins had guys like Morneau and Kubel in those drafts, but they still haven't proved their worth at the major league level.

On the pitching side you can point at guys like Romero, Crain and Baker. But again, Romero is the only one proven at the major league level.

Guys like Pierzynksi, Koskie, Mientkiewicz, Jones, Hunter and LeCroy were drafted in the mid to late 90's and it took them six or seven years to develop.

That said, the Twin did have three high first round choices in Mills, Garbe and Johnson who didn't produce anything.

Roster
Well, if I had the time at work today, I could review the roster since the core players left. You would be hard pressed to find anyone other than Mauer and maybe Romero that was a bona fide major leaguer. In the entire time that this leadership has been in charge, they have developed zero designated hitters. How can you not have developed one guy who can hit clean up? I like them, generally, but I don't understand the high regard for their work.

Looks like you jumped the gun...
Looks like Lars Anderson may be available at #64

(Had a comment scare there, as Brett Anderson selected while I typed!)

I am reminded of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "I drank what?"

Hmmmmm....
Can he put Lars Anderson's name in both the 1st and 2nd rounds??

Not even with their #2
Question now, is when will he go?  Round 3?

Lars Anderson
I heard that lars anderson wants a 7 figure bonus, which is true, because he is slipping..........

by teag on Jun 6, 2006 2:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

lars
Yep, looks like signability is a problem with Lars.

by John Sickels on Jun 6, 2006 2:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

lars
I've never had a problem before with picking a guy who didn't sign with a real team. I wonder if that will happen this year?

Knuckleball pitchers
Just curious, does anybody know of any HS or College pitchers who were knuckleball pitchers who actually got attention for their pitching?

I can't recall anybody who was IDed as a knuckleball pitcher in HS or College. Unless you want to count Wade Boggs there.

Sulentic
Just taken by the A's in the 3rd round, 98th overall.

Wait
Does John have a hotline to the Twins or something? Check out pick 96!

John
Way to nail one of the Twins' actual picks!

Not to mention a guy that I took for the Rangers in the mock draft Sunday...

misleading
that's a big misleading....I heard the Twins pick and decided that I liked it. Same with Olson.

john....
what are your thoughts on the twins taking parmelee? and what do you think of the dodgers draft so far(Kershaw, Morris and Mattingly)?

by teag on Jun 6, 2006 3:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

A's take Sulentic in the third
Wow, i'm lovin this draft for the A's so far. Definitely making the most out of what they got. I'm stoked!
(After pitcher tells GM he will pitch half of the games, complete them and they will all be QS)The GM has an orgasm and a heart attack at the same time.-Shamus

Betances
Why in God's name is Dellin Betances still available? John, you thought he wouldn't slip into the supplemental first round; it's round 8, and he's still on the board!  What's going on?

by BenjGC on Jun 6, 2006 5:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Damn
I know, and as a Red Sox fan, I'm enraged; we could have had him at 257.

Please help...
Could someone post the Twins' picks so far.  When I go to the MLB.com draft tracker it tells me to come back at 1pm...

Thank you!

Why draft a HS hitter?
Parmelee may project as a "future all-star", but he won't even be ready when our new stadium opens.  Are the college hitter that bad this year?

by Hotrod56425 on Jun 6, 2006 5:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Parmelee
Who knows? He could be ready.

Lars Anderson also goes to the Red Sox
...with the 553rd pick. He nearly fell through the floor.

Todric Johnson
Just went to the A's, 14th round.... Is he any good?

by ohad on Jun 6, 2006 6:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah A's got Sulentic 3rd and Johnson 14th
so compared to Sickles' draft those seem to be good values.

Beane sure loves his RHP's from HS and small colleges with speedy, leadoff type CF's included

LHP Jukich has some insane stats fro Div 1 pitchers, definitely a stat based pick
