Draft Day
Draft Day!
Main question now is who the Royals pick number one. Most sources agree that they have soured on Andrew Miller due to financial concerns and worries about his mechanics. But it is unclear at this time if the replacement pick will be Brad Lincoln or Luke Hochevar. Kansas City TV stations were reporting that the choice was Lincoln last night, but this morning multiple sources say that Hochevar is the likely choice. We will know in an hour and a half.
Either way, if the Royals don't pick Miller, it will throw the rest of the first round into chaos. It will be VERY interesting to see how all of this pans out.
I will post impressions here throughout the day. I will have a full analysis of the draft for newsletter subscribers either tonight or tomorrow. I will also be on XM Radio with Rob Dibble and Kevin Kennedy late this afternoon discussing the first day of the draft. Use this thread to share rumors and gossip!
We are trying to line up some very cool interviews for Friday's radio show. I'll let you know as soon as the guest/guests are confirmed.

Hochevar
That's sorta like souring on bungee jumping due to safety, and jumping out of a plane instead.
I've picked my date in the "Luke Hochevar Signing Pool".

P.S. Are the Andrew Miller bonus demands of 8 figures realistic, or is he bluffing? Some people say he is doing it to fall to the Yanks or the Red Sox. Is that even a possibility?

Surprised no one else has posted this....
"The Royals plan to select former Tennessee right-hander Luke Hochevar with the first overall pick in today's draft, The Star has learned.
Club officials spent Monday night in negotiations with Scott Boras, who represents Hochevar, in an attempt to reach an agreement. But plans are in place for the club to select Hochevar even in the absence of a deal.
The Royals turned to Hochevar as a staff consensus Monday as the best-available talent among a pool of three finalists that also included North Carolina left-hander Andrew Miller and Houston right-hander Brad Lincoln..."
"The Royals had Miller atop their draft board as late as Monday afternoon but showed increasing interest in Hochevar once he re-entered the draft pool."

A new name for the Royals
11:12 a.m.: Late word on the Royals' decision at No. 1 included speculation that incoming general manager Dayton Moore advocated taking Drew Stubbs rather than the pitchers the Royals were considering. If Stubbs goes No. 1, no one will be more surprised than Stubbs. A source close to the Texas outfielder said he had not heard from the Royals about possibly going 1/1.

Miller v. Hochevar
Miller seems to be the consensus number one pitcher in this draft.
Hochevar was pretty much considered the number two pitcher in last year's draft.
Outside of Hochevar's contract antics with the Dodgers, are the Royals making a sound pick?
Who has more talent?
Personally, as a Royal's fan, I wish the pick to be Miller.
by Loyal Royal on Jun 6, 2006 12:44 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Miller v. Hochevar
Miller is much more projectable, but his arm angle sorts of bothers me. He's a 6'6" lefty, but he really neutralizes his height by sort of flinging the ball from a one-step-above-sidearm angle. It's a deceptive delivery, but I'm VERY concerned about injury with him. Just a gut feeling, really.
Slight edge to Hochevar overall, but Miller really could be something special with a little work on his mechanics. Ask again in five years ;)

2-3-4 locked in
Early Picks May Have Done Deals
12:46 p.m.: A source familiar with the negotiations says the teams and the players that will be picks at Nos. 2-3-4 have agreed to financial parameters. The Rockies will give Stanford righthander Greg Reynolds $3.25 million; the Devil Rays will pay Long Beach State third baseman Evan Longoria $3 million; and the Pirates will dole out $2.75 million to Houston righthander Brad Lincoln.

Silliness
There's nothing wrong with people wanting to know the deal with Drabek. If I'm a Phillies fan and I see that my team has just drafted a kid that they're about to hand $1 million+ to, I'd want to know just about everything about him from his blood type up. I'm aware that there's a BA article on it, but A) it's subscriber only and B) sometimes people simply don't know where to look for information and would rather ask an "expert" on the matter. Really bush league out of these guys.

I do enjoy my privacy, but
Does a celebrity (to include professional athletes) have the right to pick and choose what noteriety they garner - picking only the good and covering up the bad? They try, we all try.
by cooper7d7 on Jun 6, 2006 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not even close to a dv charge
As for celebrities ... yes, they should be entitled to a private life. Al Pacino gets notoriety because he is a brilliant actor. It isn't any of our business why he doesn't want to work with Robert DeNiro. People like Paris Hilton may try to use their "personal" lives to grab headlines and make names for themselves, but if people were less willing to patronize smut instead of art, then certain celebrities wouldn't be able to skate by on their good looks.
As this pertains to Kyle Drabek, it isn't anyone's business what he did to acquire the "off-field issues" tab, except for the people involved in the off-field issues. If Drabek wants to talk about it, that's his prerogative. I believe, however, that it isn't anyone else's business to talk about, whether it be on the radio, in the papers, or one-on-one at a coffee shop over a cup of joe.
by StickRat on Jun 6, 2006 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sauerbeck...
From what I have read about Drabek, he himself has spoken, perhaps bragged, about his steroid use. Now if true, this was probably done off the field, but it certainly has an on the field impact. It has also been alleged that he has a bored or 'can't be bothered' attitude on the field.
I think the issue you were invoking the privacy issue on was drinking. Well, lets hope that was occuring off the field. But, if an 18 year old under great scurtiny and in line for pretty decent financial gain can't keep that in check, what happens when he's in Clearwater or Reading out from his father's watchful eye? Does he get a DWI, or in a fight, try to pitch hungover, skip running? I am not saying he is an alcoholic, but this off the field behavior, may have on the field consequences.
OK, so still why do fans get to know this stuff? I guess fans feel a certain ownership or partnership with the club they support. They/we want to know our ticket, merchandise, and cable money is being spent wisely. While Allison and Hamilton are the exceptions to the rule, these exceptions do occur and it would be nice to know that your club has done its due diligence to avoid such risks.

LaPorta to Boston in Round 14, pick #433!
Matt LaPorta was finally selected - Boston, with its 14th Round pick, selected him. Think he'll sign with the Red Sox?
By the way, any thoughts on the Indians' draft so far? They seem to be going with many college draftees, more so than usual. Do any of them have any upside or are these #4 and #5 starters (not that that's bad, but it seems a lot of college pitchers don't progress much more than what they already are, outside of a few exceptions. I thought the Indians would take a chance on some of the promising HS arms, especially since they didn't have a first-round pick.)
Even Huff is thought of more like Sowers; I'm not saying that's bad, as I've been impressed with Sowers and think he'll make an impact at the ML level, but I thought the Indians would go with a few more projectable HS arms, though they did go with Chris Archer in the 5th round I believe (or was it the 6th round?) I presume he has some projectability?
I'd appreciate any thoughts - thanks!
Take care and have a great day!

Response
It's been a decent draft for the Indians, IMO. I don't quite get the allure of Huff and thought he wasn't worth the draft slot he got but he should move through the lower levels of the organization quickly. Hodges is talented and could be a steal but has been hampered by lack of performance and injuries, that can be said for a lot of guys in this draft. Rodriguez looks like a standard Indians draft pick: a player with a well-developed offensive approach to help make up for a lack of above-average tools. McBride was cited by some here as a possible sleeper.
I wouldn't really call it a bad haul, but it seems very low risk, low ceiling to me. I'd like it a little more if Brett Anderson had fallen another pick and had been available for the Tribe at round 2, he seems like a guy that would have been a good fit.
by mrkupe on Jun 6, 2006 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thanks for the response, mrkupe!
The Indians have gone to more of a college-drafting approach lately, but they are not adverse to taking high schoolers either. Even though the strength of this draft was supposedly college pitching, it seemed like the Indians picked mostly college pitchers, with a few exceptions.
I got the same impression about it being low-risk, low-ceiling. Nothing wrong with that; it just seems that there aren't that many difference-makers in our farm system, either position players or pitchers, with a few possible exceptions, and I thought they would take a few chances on some of the HS arms that had some projectability to them, especially since they didn't have a first-round pick this year.
We can't really judge the draft for a few years, so maybe this draft will net some worthwhile players; I just didn't expect them to take so many college pitchers, as they haven't take that many in the past (it's usually around 50/50 or 60/40 college; this year, it seems more like 80/20 college.)
Just my 2 cents. :-)
Take care and have a great day!
