Draft Day

Draft Day!

Main question now is who the Royals pick number one. Most sources agree that they have soured on Andrew Miller due to financial concerns and worries about his mechanics. But it is unclear at this time if the replacement pick will be Brad Lincoln or Luke Hochevar. Kansas City TV stations were reporting that the choice was Lincoln last night, but this morning multiple sources say that Hochevar is the likely choice. We will know in an hour and a half.

Either way, if the Royals don't pick Miller, it will throw the rest of the first round into chaos. It will be VERY interesting to see how all of this pans out.

I will post impressions here throughout the day. I will have a full analysis of the draft for newsletter subscribers either tonight or tomorrow. I will also be on XM Radio with Rob Dibble and Kevin Kennedy late this afternoon discussing the first day of the draft. Use this thread to share rumors and gossip!
We are trying to line up some very cool interviews for Friday's radio show. I'll let you know as soon as the guest/guests are confirmed.

Hochevar
Souring on Miller for financial concerns, and then picking Hochevar.

That's sorta like souring on bungee jumping due to safety, and jumping out of a plane instead.

I've picked my date in the "Luke Hochevar Signing Pool".

February 27th!

hochevar
Supposedly the Royals will give Hochevar the same contract that Gordon got last year. They were reportedly negotiating with Boras last night. Don't know if that is true or not but that's the word going around KC sports circles.

first round surprises?
I have had a reliable source just tell me that there will be "lots" of surprises in the first round, and that most of the pre-draft predictions will prove to be incorrect. Should be fun!

Yankees
Well from what i have been hearing, the Yanks are interested in Max Scherzer, Hank Conger, David Huff, Brett Anderson, Pedro Beato and Jeremy Jeffress with their first rounder. However, some reports have Beato falling out of the first and into their laps in the supplemental. With their supplemental, I have them looking at Matt Latos, Jered Hughes, Colten Williems and Dellin Bestances. What is going on with Bestances draft stock though, at one point he was in the first, then he slipped to the supplemental, and now people have him going in the 2nd-3rd. If i were the Yanks, and Beato is off the board in the supplemental, i wouldnt think twice.

P.S. Are the Andrew Miller bonus demands of 8 figures realistic, or is he bluffing? Some people say he is doing it to fall to the Yanks or the Red Sox. Is that even a possibility?

Surprised no one else has posted this....
KC Star Online:

"The Royals plan to select former Tennessee right-hander Luke Hochevar with the first overall pick in today's draft, The Star has learned.

Club officials spent Monday night in negotiations with Scott Boras, who represents Hochevar, in an attempt to reach an agreement. But plans are in place for the club to select Hochevar even in the absence of a deal.

The Royals turned to Hochevar as a staff consensus Monday as the best-available talent among a pool of three finalists that also included North Carolina left-hander Andrew Miller and Houston right-hander Brad Lincoln..."

"The Royals had Miller atop their draft board as late as Monday afternoon but showed increasing interest in Hochevar once he re-entered the draft pool."

A new name for the Royals
Taken from the Draft Day Blog at BaseballAmerica....

11:12 a.m.: Late word on the Royals' decision at No. 1 included speculation that incoming general manager Dayton Moore advocated taking Drew Stubbs rather than the pitchers the Royals were considering. If Stubbs goes No. 1, no one will be more surprised than Stubbs. A source close to the Texas outfielder said he had not heard from the Royals about possibly going 1/1.

*crosses fingers*
I would love to see the Royals take Stubbs off the board.  I'm so afraid the Orioles at #9 have become enamored with Drew's "tools", and I'm hoping that he's not even an option at that point.  There are about twenty names I'd call ahead of him, but he seems to be at or near the top of Joe Jordan's list.

So please, KC, Detroit, or Cincinnati, take Stubbs off the board :D

Baseball America says that "multiple sources" indicate the Royals will pick Hochevar.

Boras really is a genius, isn't he?
I can't deny Hochevar's talent, but it's absolutely amazing that this guy (and his advisor) can pull off a #1 overall pick and a minimum $4 million signing bonus after pulling off the "Douche Of The Draft" act he did last year...

Wow
BA is reporting that the Dodgers are going to grab Bryan Morris at No. 7.

I don't know about you, but I'm thinking that Morris feels like he just won the lottery, used $1 of his winnings to buy another lottery ticket, and then won a second lottery.

Miller v. Hochevar
Curious the thoughts of others...

Miller seems to be the consensus number one pitcher in this draft.

Hochevar was pretty much considered the number two pitcher in last year's draft.

Outside of Hochevar's contract antics with the Dodgers, are the Royals making a sound pick?

Who has more talent?

Personally, as a Royal's fan, I wish the pick to be Miller.

by Loyal Royal on Jun 6, 2006 12:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Miller v. Hochevar
My take is that Hochevar is the more polished pitcher - he already has a pretty established 3-pitch repertoire that is ML-average or better.  He much more likely to step in a help the Royals within a year or two than Miller.

Miller is much more projectable, but his arm angle sorts of bothers me.  He's a 6'6" lefty, but he really neutralizes his height by sort of flinging the ball from a one-step-above-sidearm angle.  It's a deceptive delivery, but I'm VERY concerned about injury with him.  Just a gut feeling, really.

Slight edge to Hochevar overall, but Miller really could be something special with a little work on his mechanics.  Ask again in five years ;)

by birdtown on Jun 6, 2006 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

IMO
Money is a huge factor with the clubs so Miller overhyped himself by supposedly demanding an 8 figure bonus.

2-3-4 locked in
2-3-4 locked in:

Early Picks May Have Done Deals
12:46 p.m.: A source familiar with the negotiations says the teams and the players that will be picks at Nos. 2-3-4 have agreed to financial parameters. The Rockies will give Stanford righthander Greg Reynolds $3.25 million; the Devil Rays will pay Long Beach State third baseman Evan Longoria $3 million; and the Pirates will dole out $2.75 million to Houston righthander Brad Lincoln.

How much does Hochevar going #1 have to do with how impressive he's been with the Fort Worth Cats (I've heard he's been throwing really well)
his #s are 22.2 ip, 34/11 k/9, 2.38 era

I have no clue as to the level of competition (rookie ball, A ball ?)

His teammate Matt Harrington has an era of 1.32 in 13.2 ip (nice symetry) and 16/5 k/bb

Interesting that he was announced as an OF.
hopefully the Halos can throw enough $$$ his way to persuade him to sign.

Krivsky has been a Godsend compared to Dan-O ...
but this draft looks horrifc on paper. How many CFs do they need? Painful to see ZERO quality SPs after 5 rounds ... ugh ... Cueto, Wood and Homer better be for real ...
Paul Householder, Gary Redus, Tommy Lawless, Duane Walker ... prospects rawk!

As a GM Kriv>Obrien....
However at this point in this draft, I like Obriens drafts much more than I like Kirvskys first draft. Yeah, this draft has been said to be a horrible talent field for a long time, but a college reliever with an ERA over 4 and a WHIP of 1.48 in the second round? Come on.

Silliness
Somebody writes in to the MLB.com draft show to ask about Drabek's makeup issues, and they give the question a total runaround. What was the point of that?

There's nothing wrong with people wanting to know the deal with Drabek. If I'm a Phillies fan and I see that my team has just drafted a kid that they're about to hand $1 million+ to, I'd want to know just about everything about him from his blood type up. I'm aware that there's a BA article on it, but A) it's subscriber only and B) sometimes people simply don't know where to look for information and would rather ask an "expert" on the matter. Really bush league out of these guys.

I disagree
It's certainly becoming a foregone cultural belief that we have the right to crawl up our public figures' assess with a Mag-Lite and a magnifying glass, but all the money in the world shouldn't buy a person, organization, etc. the right to embelish about people's personal lives. Maybe, if the makeup issues become a problem AFTER he signs, then the Phils fans have a right to know what is going on. As a rule, though, what a high school kid does in his personal life off the field doesn't belong in the papers.

When its illegal...
and when does that protection wear off? after college, after early adulthood?  What about 42 year old athletes?  Or 60 year old presidents?

Not an age issue ...
This is a privacy issue. Age shouldn't matter. I'm not talking about what is legal. I'm talking about what is moral. Sure, we can all sit around and joke about Pres. Bill Clinton being a player. Or take stabs at Barry Bonds regarding the steroid issue. I'm of the opinion that the lines on the field should be respected, though. Take the Sauerbeck incident last week. That has nothing to do with the game. Is it legal to put in the paper? Yes. Does it belong in the paper? In the police blotter, maybe. But it doesn't deserve a headline simply because one of the parties is a public figure, and his name is recognizable. So about the age thing ... yeah, it doesn't matter how old a subject is. Some stuff is none of the general public's business.

by StickRat on Jun 6, 2006 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do enjoy my privacy, but
just spitballing here, if Sauerbeck doen't get all uppity when the headline reads, Scotty Pulls Out Win, then he can't complain about, what was it?, domestic violence.

Does a celebrity (to include professional athletes) have the right to pick and choose what noteriety they garner - picking only the good and covering up the bad?  They try, we all try.

by cooper7d7 on Jun 6, 2006 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not even close to a dv charge
Just to clarify, since I'm the one who brought it up. The Sauerbeck charge had nothing to do with domestic violence, or violence of any kind for that matter.

As for celebrities ... yes, they should be entitled to a private life. Al Pacino gets notoriety because he is a brilliant actor. It isn't any of our business why he doesn't want to work with Robert DeNiro. People like Paris Hilton may try to use their "personal" lives to grab headlines and make names for themselves, but if people were less willing to patronize smut instead of art, then certain celebrities wouldn't be able to skate by on their good looks.

As this pertains to Kyle Drabek, it isn't anyone's business what he did to acquire the "off-field issues" tab, except for the people involved in the off-field issues. If Drabek wants to talk about it, that's his prerogative. I believe, however, that it isn't anyone else's business to talk about, whether it be on the radio, in the papers, or one-on-one at a coffee shop over a cup of joe.

Sauerbeck...
was either driving drunk or being driven by a drunk women, not his wife.  So I stand corrected regarding "DV".

From what I have read about Drabek, he himself has spoken, perhaps bragged, about his steroid use.  Now if true, this was probably done off the field, but it certainly has an on the field impact.  It has also been alleged that he has a bored or 'can't be bothered' attitude on the field.

I think the issue you were invoking the privacy issue on was drinking.  Well, lets hope that was occuring off the field.  But, if an 18 year old under great scurtiny and in line for pretty decent financial gain can't keep that in check, what happens when he's in Clearwater or Reading out from his father's watchful eye?  Does he get a DWI, or in a fight, try to pitch hungover, skip running?  I am not saying he is an alcoholic, but this off the field behavior, may have on the field consequences.

OK, so still why do fans get to know this stuff?  I guess fans feel a certain ownership or partnership with the club they support.  They/we want to know our ticket, merchandise, and cable money is being spent wisely.  While Allison and Hamilton are the exceptions to the rule, these exceptions do occur and it would be nice to know that your club has done its due diligence to avoid such risks.

"steroid use ... attitude on the field"
I wouldn't classify these as off-field issues, so that is a different matter. As for the two players you mentioned, and their off-field issues, I think these are examples of situations that should be dealt with inside the organization. Of course, fans want to know the status of their players. But there are issues that are bigger than the game, and these players -- as human beings -- should have their privacy respected. I think the ambiguity over the abscence of Zack Greinke is a good example of the way personal issues should be handled.

Jordan Walden
As well. #25 on BA's board, and he's still there in the 10th round.

Walden is committed to Texas.
I wouldn't be surprised to see someone take him later on and try to but him away.

nats
look at the nats picking high schoolers for their first 6 picks.  i guess they don't plan on winning for a few more years, mine as well say goodbye to soriano, hernandez, and guillen. i thought they were going to load up on college guys to try to boost their farm system.
Talent can not make up for hard work.

LaPorta to Boston in Round 14, pick #433!
Hello everyone,

Matt LaPorta was finally selected - Boston, with its 14th Round pick, selected him.  Think he'll sign with the Red Sox?

By the way, any thoughts on the Indians' draft so far?  They seem to be going with many college draftees, more so than usual.  Do any of them have any upside or are these #4 and #5 starters (not that that's bad, but it seems a lot of college pitchers don't progress much more than what they already are, outside of a few exceptions.  I thought the Indians would take a chance on some of the promising HS arms, especially since they didn't have a first-round pick.)

Even Huff is thought of more like Sowers; I'm not saying that's bad, as I've been impressed with Sowers and think he'll make an impact at the ML level, but I thought the Indians would go with a few more projectable HS arms, though they did go with Chris Archer in the 5th round I believe (or was it the 6th round?)  I presume he has some projectability?

I'd appreciate any thoughts - thanks!

Take care and have a great day!

Response
I was under the impression that the Indians generally draft very heavy on the college side of things with a few notable exceptions. This year doesn't appear to be too different.

It's been a decent draft for the Indians, IMO. I don't quite get the allure of Huff and thought he wasn't worth the draft slot he got but he should move through the lower levels of the organization quickly. Hodges is talented and could be a steal but has been hampered by lack of performance and injuries, that can be said for a lot of guys in this draft. Rodriguez looks like a standard Indians draft pick: a player with a well-developed offensive approach to help make up for a lack of above-average tools. McBride was cited by some here as a possible sleeper.

I wouldn't really call it a bad haul, but it seems very low risk, low ceiling to me. I'd like it a little more if Brett Anderson had fallen another pick and had been available for the Tribe at round 2, he seems like a guy that would have been a good fit.

Thanks for the response, mrkupe!
Hello mrkupe, thank you for the response; greatly appreciated! :-)

The Indians have gone to more of a college-drafting approach lately, but they are not adverse to taking high schoolers either.  Even though the strength of this draft was supposedly college pitching, it seemed like the Indians picked mostly college pitchers, with a few exceptions.

I got the same impression about it being low-risk, low-ceiling.  Nothing wrong with that; it just seems that there aren't that many difference-makers in our farm system, either position players or pitchers, with a few possible exceptions, and I thought they would take a few chances on some of the HS arms that had some projectability to them, especially since they didn't have a first-round pick this year.

We can't really judge the draft for a few years, so maybe this draft will net some worthwhile players; I just didn't expect them to take so many college pitchers, as they haven't take that many in the past (it's usually around 50/50 or 60/40 college; this year, it seems more like 80/20 college.)

Just my 2 cents. :-)

Take care and have a great day!

day
Either way, if the Royals don't pick Miller, it will throw the rest of the first round into chaos.
