Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

KCTV: Lincon to the Royals

Frank Boal (KC's FOX) reported that according to Lincoln's advisor that he had been assured that his client would be the overall #1 pick in the draft tomorrow.

I dunno I am torn. I keep telling myself everyone but me thinks that Andrew Miller is the best pitcher in the draft, but the more I read up and check out Brad Lincoln, I think he's better. Either way the Royals win as I think their value is about the same and Miller is much more expensive. Maybe those darned Miller 8 figure demands are true and he can fall to my Cubs, but I'm smoking the  biased train.

but
the Royals don't want to pay more than they paid Gordon (who is obviously a superior talent than ANYONE in this draft)...

5.5
is reasonable I guess.  I hope he falls to the Rays' at that price.  I heard a rumor that Greg Reynolds could go to the Rox at #2.  Most of the stuff he's said has come out in BA a few days later, so he has some connections.  I would be estatic if that happened.

5.5
They don't want to pay 5.5 million for a potential star pitcher, but have no qualls paying that to a collective gobbledy-goo of crap they signed this offseason.

Bonuses and Contracts aren't the same thing
Anyways, I was hearing that Miller was aiming for around 7 or 8 million.

by RBH on Jun 6, 2006 2:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Bonus
Not sure how true it is that he wants 7 or 8 but that is beyond ridiculous.

I would imagine
7-8 mil is just part of propaganda machine to get him drop to the Cubs they are supposedly trying to engineer.

Lincoln
I think Lincoln is better anyway.

Lincoln
As a Ranger fan, I'm kinda bummed that Lincoln will be going first overall tomorrow. Texas drafted him in the 28th round in 2003, but were unable to sign him.

does this change the draft?
how much does this change the draft? will TB go longoria over lincecum?

by npurcell on Jun 6, 2006 1:16 AM EDT reply actions

rockies
i think the rockies have said that if miller falls to them, they will take him...i think then that TB could possibly take Longoria but they also might want SP and take like Hochevar
Sabean, stop giving away our 1st round draft picks!!

Interesting
It'll be interesting to see if the Rockies really want to take Miller. It's one thing to say that they intend to take him, but it's another thing to actually commit to the large contract that he'll want. This may get complicated if the Rockies have already hammered out an agreement with Longoria. Things could be looking VERY good for the Devil Rays if the new ownership is ready and willing to make a splash with his checkbook.

I have to say though, I love Andrew Miller. He's a guy who's basically just been pitching to stay in shape for the past two years, and he's made good use of the time by developing as a pitcher. It wouldn't surprise me if he's been holding back at some points this year, as everybody generally has an idea of what he's capable of by this point. It also wouldn't surprise me if he shows better stuff in pro ball than he has this year, simply because he now has a reason to use it and because he'll have gotten his big payday.

Lincoln is a fine pick for the Royals, although I have to admit that I'm a little worried given the organization's hatchet job on just about every arm to pass through it for the past while. It doesn't seem like a particularly good fit for a guy like Lincoln, who's only now going to be turning his full attention to pitching and is probably not a guy to be rushed.

Question
Who is making this pick? I had read Moore wasnt "involved" and Baird was actually asked to head the draft but declined.

Personally I think Millers a no brainer, for KC especially, but I guess this is what makes KC KC

by goalieguy on Jun 6, 2006 1:47 AM EDT reply actions

Ladnier is the guy making the picks
And when it comes down to it, the Scouting Director is the main guy for things like this draft.

As for Andrew Miller.

I didn't buy into him, and the talk of asking for a bonus in the high 7 digits, or even higher, just compounded the skepticism.

I don't find a good reason why I should believe the hype when it comes to Andrew Miller.

Especially because those same experts will stop talking about how Andrew should have been picked first and was the best pick if he messes up his arm.

I do like what I see when it comes to Brad Lincoln. Pretty good K rate, pretty good control. And he probably hasn't run up the mileage of most pitchers, although I'm not sure on that yet.

by RBH on Jun 6, 2006 2:28 AM EDT up reply actions

well
why don't you buy into the hype of Miller but you do of Lincoln.  not being overly critical just curious

by nms on Jun 6, 2006 2:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Lincoln
Brad Lincoln pitched 127 innings this season, and Ive heard that he's been pushed pretty hard during his college career.  There's also pretty good evidence that Miller was the better college pitcher.  I think the only reason to think Miller is more of a risk for injury centers around his delivery.

Why does his asking for a big bonus compound your skepticism?  Is there something about maximising your earnings that indicates youre going to be less of a pitcher?

by sanchez101 on Jun 6, 2006 2:54 AM EDT up reply actions

mileage
Miller has thrown 107 innings this year.  More importantly though he is an expert at cruise control.
His K rate is merely good (a wee bit over 9 per 9) instead of great because he dials down his velo to add movement, throwing his 89-93 2-seamer more than his 93-96 4-seamer.  This induces tons of weak contact and allows him to go deeper into games with out getting fatigued.

i say this from first hand observation

by nms on Jun 6, 2006 2:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Miller
Miller is the most groundball oriented pitcher in the nation, according to Keith Law, inducing 80% groundballs.  Thats more impressive to me than Lincoln's K/9.

that is why you should listen to 610 sports
cause Frank Boals source was wrong and 610 was right....as usual

by gashousegang on Jun 6, 2006 3:51 PM EDT reply actions

is this a good choice for kc?
the history is this guy will want to maximize his earnings -not in the normal sense - but in the absolutely nothing else to consider sense.

if the objective is to win, a team needs to know what it is in order to best apply its resources to that objective.

whatever ks is, it aint this - a Hochevar kind of team.
