Mets Mock Draft Recap
2/62 Jered Hughes/RHP/Long Beach State
3/94 Carmine Giardina/LHP/Durant HS (FL)
4/124 John Shelby/2B/Kentucky
5/154 Shane Keough/OF/Yavapai JC
Although this draft lacks the high end talent of other drafts in recent memory, it stil would have been nice to have a first round pick. If the Mets still had the 18th pick I probably would have taken either Hank Conger, David Huff, or Brett Anderson. Now on to the actual Mets picks. The Mets scouting staff was pleasantly surprised to see Hughes available at #62. As the pick approached, Hughes emerged as the top rated player on our draft board. Offers nice size and solid off-speed options. Might not have the upside to be a top of the rotation starter, but looks like a pretty decent bet to be a solid, back of the rotation innings eater. Not a bad selection for mid-Round 2. In Round 3 we decided to go the opposite route, a projectable HS LHP. As is, Giardina shows the potential to miss a number of bats with the excellent movement on his pitches, especially his fastball and curveball. A bit of a signability question, but without a first the Mets can afford him. With the final 2 picks, the Mets went after bloodlines. Despite some recent draft picks, the Mets depth at MI in the minors needs a lot of improvement. Although he struggled as a Junior, John Shelby regained some of his form late in the year and if he can develop a bit more power he is a 5 tool player. I am also a bit partial to those with relatives who have played in the majors because they have a better understanding of how major league life is. The Mets concluded by taking OF Shane Keough out of Yavapai JC, the son of former major leaguer and Oakland front office man Matt Keough. Keough is a bit raw with his bat, but that is more a product of missing 2 years in High School. The improvement he showed, especially when it came to strike zone judgment, over the course of this past season indicates to me that with professional coaching it will develop even further. Despite not having a 1st Round pick in this draft, I think the Mets made out rather well

Good Job
Carmine Giardina I'm less sure on. But the scouting reports I've found looked very positive. Brewerfan says "His full repertoire may arguably be the most well-rounded of any prep pitcher available for the 2006 draft. That arsenal includes a low-90s fastball that shows good, late movement, an improving slow curveball that starts high and ends low, and his signature pitch, a changeup that darts away from right-handed batters. He commands all of his pitches very well, and he is the type of player that one team with a high pick could fall in love with and take higher than where many expect."
There's also a video of Giardina at mlb.com, though I didn't think he looked as good in the video though as the reports suggest. But I think I'd trust the scouts over a 30 second clip that may not have been his best stuff. And they don't have video on too many of the HS pitchers, so he probably is highly regarded. And while I'm not sure on the HS talent, I think I would like to see a HS pitcher at that spot inthe real draft, if there's a good one left. Of course in the real draft, half of the best HS talent will likely be considered unsignable in that spot, as well.
Shelby is a guy robcast had initially ranked near his top 30 which he posted on the MOD thread. I thought that was too high, but I certainly can't argue with him in round 4. Second base is an obvious need, and while I believe in best player available regardles of position, it happened that alot of 2B talent was still available here in this draft. Adam Davis, Jim Negrych, and Scott Sizemore were all also still available--but Shelby was the best one there.
As for Keogh, I have to admit I had no idea who he was. The odds are that will be true of our actual picks tomorrow as well. Sounds like our scouts here were pretty thorough though.
Good job all around. Good mix of pitchers and bats, HS, college, and JC.
