Red Sox Mock Draft

27 Colton Willems, RHP, Florida HS

28 Stephen King, SS, Florida HS

40 Jeffrey Locke, LHP, New Hampshire HS

44 Dellin Betances, RHP, New York HS

71 Dustin Dickerson, 3B, Texas HS

83 Caleb Clay, RHP, Alabama HS

103 Cole Gillespie, OF, Oregon State University

133 Brian Jeroloman, C, University of Florida

163 Josh Morris, 1B, University of Georgia

Star-divide

27/28 - We hoped that Sinkbeil, Antonelli, Marrero or Anderson may slip to us but went with we thought was the best available arm in Willems.  We debated 28.  I liked Parmele but our mock scouting staff felt he may be a tad overrated and opted for King, the SS with major upside but mixed results thus far.

40 - Laporta was our target, he went 36.  Maybe Sapp will be there, no, 37.  Definately Latos, no, 39.  I liked Betances but our scouts convinced me he may be there at 71 and Locke was a better option.

44 - Some talk about selecting Wright, I put my foot down and got Betances.

71 - We had Sulentic and Melancon on our radar and nearly got our top choice, Cody Johnson, before being scooped by the Nats.

83 - Clay was our guy and he was there.

103 - We threw a lot of names out there but felt we needed and an outfielder and someone from the college ranks so Gillespie was the pick.

133 - I was holding out hope that McBride would be here and might have taken him at 103 had I do to over again.  Huffman, then Langley but both went early.  I opted for Jeroloman whose defense I liked and whose bat I would hope be servicable.

163 - One scout had Creigton 3B Daegens at the top of his list heading into the 5th round.  I opted for 1B Josh Morris for two reasons.  First, between Dickerson and possibly King, I thought we were a bit heavy at 3B.  Second, I had thoughts of the big RH depositing balls over the Green Monster.

is this realistic?
first 6 picks are all high school picks. is this a realistic red sox draft?

No, but with a disclaimer
The Sox strategy, IMHO, has to make value picks.  In recent years, that has been going with the college route as most teams have concentrated on high ceiling/high risk high schoolers.  I think the Sox will show more emphasis on the high school ranks than past years for 3 reasons:
  •  The market is more moneyball/college focused.
  •  The talent seems to be more slanted to the high school hurlers.
  •  A deeper farm system will allow them to take more risks and be more patient.
In our mock draft, I think you could make a case for selecting LaPorta and/or Morris in the first round but we thought each was a slight reach.  We were pretty happy with Locke and Betances in the supp rounds although you can make a case for Brown, Perez, Wright and Ottavino.

I think we could have made a more concerted effort to go the college ranks early, but we felt we got the best available in those round.  I don't think you'll see 6 picks, 6 high schoolers, but I think you will see more than expected this year.

FWIW
An article in toady's Globe suggests you may be right about Theo going with HS guys.
God rested one day out of 7, Felix rests 4 out of 5.

seems like the best value...
but the stephen king pick is the only one i have true issue with. i would have liked to see laporta taken at 28. however, i like the draft overall and the betances pick is my favorite.
when your ERA has letters and not numbers, it's a bad thing- kevin goldstein

King Selection
We guessed wrong on LaPorta, hoping he would be there at 40.  Parmele might have been the safer choice as I think King and LaPorta would be slight overdrafts at 28.

draft
Personally, I would have picked Lars Anderson at 28, I like him a ton.  King is a guy I think would have dropped a bit, but certainly a possibility with the Red Sox considering how much they love guys up the middle.

The sox desperately needed OFer, 3rd base, and 1st base help in the system, and they didn't really address that in the first few picks.  I think we'll certainly see one of the Parmelee / Anderson / Laporta group going at either 27 or 28.

As for the person above who asked "is this realistic", yes, it is.  Theo was quoted recently as saying that the more depth he acquired in the minors, the more likely he was to take calculated risks in the form of highschoolers.

Remember, when Theo took over, the farm system was one of the worst around, and only a few years later it's a top 10 system (though some of that talent was already around when Theo took over, this isn't meant to be a 'Theo is God' post).  So naturally, Theo looked for advanced college players (Alvarez and Pedroia) to have some talent in the upper levels as quickly as possible
