Dodgers MOD II

We are about 24 hours before the mock draft, and I thought I would let fellow Dodger fans know what my plans are, which anybody can comment on.

For the #7 overall pick, I would like Clayton Kershaw, but it looks like the Tigers' fans are pressing their scouting director to take him.  My second choice is Jeremy Jeffress, and we should be able to get him.  But if he is off the board, my next in line preferences are Travis Snider and Bill Rowell.

For picks 26 and 31, my short list is Colton Willems, Chris Parmelee, Jordan Walden, Kyler Burke, Lars Anderson, Max Sapp, horror novelist Stephen King, and Jason Place.  I was going to put Kasey Kiker at the top of my list just because the Dodgers are known to have expressed interest in him, but I heard he had poor workouts with the Rangers and Braves, and I just read John Sickels say he knows what Kiker's makeup issues are and to his mind they are more serious than Drabek's.  So I am not taking Kiker, and I hope Logan White doesn't either.

Drabek
Any reason you're not considering Drabek at the top pick?

by mckeeno on Jun 3, 2006 1:10 PM EDT reply actions

Drabek
Drabek's short-arm delivery puts me off, and I doubt Logan White is enamored with it.  I read the Baseball America article about Drabek and his make-up issues, and I don't think those issues are trivial if we are talking about a signing bonus investement of over $2 million.  Also, from Drabek's quotes in the article, he randomly inserts the word "like" into just about every sentence out of his mouth, sometimes twice per sentence, and I am not okay with that.

deliveries
if drabeks delivery puts you off, then colton willems delivery should as well.

A tad biased in favor of HS guys
I know that Logan White has tended to go after HS guys, but someone like Morrow could move quickly and might be available at #7

HS Bias
As you say, White likes the high school guys, and I share the same preference.  If Brad Lincoln somehow dropped to #7 I would take him, but he isn't going to drop that far.  Morrow's track record in college is pretty poor for a guy being talked about as a top 10 pick, and there is some talk that he may end up a reliever.  I don't think a pitcher who may end up a reliever should be taken in the top 10.

by CanuckDodger on Jun 3, 2006 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

If possibly being a reliever is the hold-up
Then you have eliminated probably every pitcher in this draft.  Even the top pitchers, there is nobody who jumps out as a definite starter

by mtk52983 on Jun 3, 2006 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Let me correct that
Most of the top rated pitchers have concerns about whether they will be a starter or a reliever in the majors.  The ones who are more sure things to be starters are ranked towards the middle to end of Round 1 like Greg Reynolds, Brett Anderson, David Huff, and Joba Chamberlain.  Even guys like Andrew Miller I have heard talk that maybe he will be an elite closer and not a starter

by mtk52983 on Jun 3, 2006 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Let Me Expand On That..
I am not talking about just the "possibility" that a pitcher could end up a reliever.  I realize that possibility exists for every amateur pitcher.  But not every pitcher has scouts, or a few scouts at least, pegging him as a reliever BEFORE he is even drafted.  That is a red flag to me, at least for first rounders.  And in the case of a college pitcher, we are talking about a guy who is closer to his ceiling than a high school guy.  A high school pitcher has more time to perfect a second and third pitch or tweak his delivery.

Cedric Hunter
What do you think of Cedric Hunter?  I know the Braves are interested in him, thats a good sign, and he would bring some lefthanded power into the organization with a chance to play CF.  Hunter seems to fit White's profile of a good athlete with a fairly polished package of hitting skills.  IMO, he should be in the mix if available at 26 and 31.

Hunter
BA doesn't think Hunter can handle CF in the pros, and they believe his power may max out at 15-20 homers a year.  Maybe a team will pick him higher, but right now he looks like mid-to-late-2nd round material to me.

Pix
Canuck - I scan by this site all the time as it is such a great source of info, and thought I'd give you some support.  You did a great job last year in the mock draft by the way.

The names that jumped out for me in the last few weeks are Kershaw, Snider and Walden.  Of course EVERYBODY has Kershaw at #7 for the Dodgers unless he has already been picked.  Snider could be a good fallback at #7, but doesn't figure to be around at #26. That might be the spot for Walden.

Every silver lining has a cloud.

a little reach at 31
I usually dont like reaches but with this kid, if he goes to college, hes going to be a top 10 pick in 3 years.

its LHP Brandon Belt. IMO, if he gets away to texas, he is going to blossom into a monster. he is 6'5 185lbs with a fluid mechanically sound delivery. this spring his fb was 87-93 but he got tired towards the end and it was 86-89 which is okay because as he gets stronger and older, he will be able to maintain velocity. He could be another david price in 3 years.

MOCK DRAFT - 1ST 3 PICKS

If in real life we can get .....

07 - Clayton Kershaw (LHP)
26 - Jordan Walden (RHP)
31 - Kyler Burke (OF)

..... with our 1st 3 picks, I think most Dodgers fans would be happy.

Canuck,

What do you think about OF Jared Mitchell and when he should/will go in the actual draft?

by BLUEFAN on Jun 4, 2006 5:49 PM EDT reply actions

Mitchell
It looks like Mitchell will probably go in the second round.  I am not high on him, as there are questions about his bat, and I shy away from taking position players in the top rounds if there are concerns they may not hit, regardless of whatever other tools they have.

Nate...
Aside from passing on Kiker, what do you think of my draft?  I am hoping Logan White visits the site before Tuesday and is appropriately inspired. LOL

my thoughts
overall I like it.

Kershaw- that was a no brainer. great pick. we need an infusion of high cieling arms and we get the top 2 prep pitcher in the draft. nice

Walden- eh. He has a big time celing but hes had injury problems including a sore elbow, which is a big red flag to me. I would have gone Kiker or Willems over Walden. Willems was consistently awesome this spring and his control is very good which could make him a fast mover through the system. same applies for kiker.

Burke- great pick. I love his bat. and hes a switch hitter with patience!

Kevin Angelle- I really like this pick. projectible lefty who had great production this spring. I feel bad for texas AM, they sign 3 awesome lefties in kershaw britton and angelle and none of the 3 will be pitching for them.

ryan scott- I dont know much about ryan scott. actually i dont know anything. could you post a scouting report of him? that said, jeff inman was still available and i would probably have picked him. give him 2nd round money out of the hochevar fund and buy out his stanford scholarship. Inman was rated in the top 70 by PGCC i think.

by npurcell on Jun 4, 2006 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Ryan Scott
BA describes Scott as the best all-around prep hitter in Louisiana, over the more highly-regarded Mitchell and Ryan Adams, who are toolsier.  6'2, 200 pounds, bats left, has good bat speed and a lot of power potential.  Scott runs decently and has a solid arm for right field.  BA ranked him the #142 talent in the draft, so he was a guy I could see being a realistic pick with our 143 overall pick.  He is committed to Tulane so scouts are a little wary of his signability, but that was the same situation Xavier Paul was in in 2003.
