John's Draft Board

John's Draft Board

This is NOT a prediction, this is my personal draft board for the first round. Note that I am an amateur at this, an informed one perhaps, but I've never had any actual scouting training. But this is how I will rank guys going into my real-time Twins Shadow Draft on Tuesday. This is based on scouting reports, video, personal observation of a few of these guys, conversation with people who know a lot more than I do, and intuition.

  1. Andrew Miller, LHP, North Carolina
  2. Brad Lincoln, RHP, Houston
  3. Brandon Morrow, RHP, California
  4. Tim Lincecum, RHP, Washington
  5. Evan Longoria, INF, Long Beach State
  6. Kyle Drabek, RHP, Texas HS
  7. Clayton Kershaw, LHP, Texas HS
  8. Luke Hochevar, RHP, Forth Worth Cats
  9. Joba Chamberlain, RHP, Nebraska
  10. Jeremy Jeffress, RHP, Virginia HS
  11. Max Scherzer, RHP, Missouri
  12. Drew Stubbs, OF, Texas
  13. Greg Reynolds, RHP, Stanford
  14. Pedro Beato, RHP, St. Petersburg CC
  15. Hank Conger, C, California HS
  16. Dan Bard, RHP, North Carolina
  17. Lars Anderson, 1B, California HS
  18. Travis Snider, OF, Washington HS
  19. Matt Antonelli, 3B, Wake Forest
  20. Bill Rowell, 3B, New Jersey HS
  21. Cedric Hunter, OF, Georgia HS
  22. Chris Parmelee, 1B, California HS
  23. Kyle McCulloch, RHP, Texas
  24. Jordan Walden, RHP, Texas HS
  25. Brett Anderson, LHP, Oklahoma HS
  26. Chris Perez, RHP, Miami
  27. Adam Ottavino, RHP, Northeastern
  28. Mark Hamilton, 1B, Tulane
  29. Chris Marrero, 3B, Florida HS
  30. Brooks Brown, RHP, Georgia
The Twins pick 20th. I will have a clean shot at Anderson, Snider, Antonelli, and Cedric Hunter at that pick.

John
like you i'm a HUGE twins fan...it's ridiculous..

Anyways....

I like your picks for us.

Brett Anderson fits our system, lefty i believe, with great control, could move fairly quickly for a highschool through the system.  Twins love those control guys.  Sounds like he has a good pedigree.  Sure the twins might have enough southpaws, but heck...

Snider- I like it, he could be ready maybe by the time we get a new stadium in 2010.  We need a big time power hitter, whether that be a DH or outfielder doesn't matter, we just need a bat.

I could see us looking at a conger or sapp, as insurance on Mauer or potential DH type guy.

They had a lot of success imo, with garza/slowey last year, so they might be thinking College pitcher again is what I'm thinking, I dunno.

Anderson and Snider and Rowewell...I think one will be a twin.

also John....
what about Cedric Hunter do you like?

5"10 185 pretty small for a outfielder, projects to have limited power, good speed, compared to J.Jones a former twin, now cubby.

Also he's a lefty, and seriously how many lefties do the twins need.....

mauer, morneau, kubel, moses is a lefty......time to get some righties in this lineup, dont ya think!

hunter
I dunno. I just like him. Not very scientific, I know.

Brett Anderson?
I think John is referring to Lars Anderson, who he has a mancrush on.

Not that I really know what I'm looking at...
Looking at the vids of the top prospects at mlb.com one thing that stood out to me about Drabek was that the kid was all arm, whereas Clayton Kershaw seemed to reach the mid 90's with seemingly a lot less effort.

nice list
I like you ranking..i'm just surprised to see Conker that high and Rowell that low (he's projected to go to Cincinati's pick).

Keep it up John.

mlb.com
has Lincecum now going to the reds with the 8th pick...  I'd be happier than a pig in ish if that happened.

kiker
no kiker in the first round?

Marrero also has dropped on your board. Any reason?

by Godot on Jun 3, 2006 3:20 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Kiker
I was surprised about Kiker's omission, too. I think there's a small chance he actually goes before Drabek in the draft and I'm sure many teams at least have him in their top 30.

Any reason for leaving him off; how close was he to making your list?

by FI on Jun 3, 2006 8:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

kiker
hmmm....that's an oversight. He should be on there somewhere.

Marrero dropped because he has a hard time with breaking balls.

kiker
No, wait, actually Kiker dropped because I found out what his "makeup" issue is. It is not steroids, and it is not public, and I can't discuss it further unless I get confirmation from other sources, but I take it a lot more seroiusly than I take the makeup stuff with Drabek.

Conger
I like his bat but I don't see much chance he stays behind the plate.  So I would put him as a 1B/C I am uncertain I would rank him 15th given that but...  He does have a ton of power.

Boras clients
Does anyone know which on this list are Boras clients. I think Scherzer,Lincoln, maybe Miller and of course Hochevar.

Matt LaPorta is also a Boras client
All the fear about Boras and Mark Pawelek signed pretty quickly

John's list for the Twins @ 20
"The Twins pick 20th. I will have a clean shot at Anderson, Snider, Antonelli, and Cedric Hunter at that pick."

Snider will not be there...

Padres were looking at Conger @ 17, but he's caught a bit of helium in the last 48 hours (private workouts, etc.) possibly at the expense of the Snider. The Padres had crossed Snider off their list (because they thought Snider would be gone). Now the Padres are deciding between Snider, McColloch, and another undiscloseed collegiate pitcher...

lars anderson
sorry john but I severely doubt that your Twinkies will pick up Lars at #20, a bit too early, he might go to my Gints at #33, he is a local kid, born in Oakland. A lot of Sacto kids,(specificaly Jesuit, which is Anderson's high school, and proudly mine too)are targets of the Giants.

John's playing "shawdow"
...He's pretending he's drafting for the Twins with the realistic angle that those players who are "off the board" when the Twins pick, are likewise unavailable to him...

John is a big Lars fan and would possilibly take Lars with the 20th pick instead of whomever the Twins do take.

Chris Marrero?
John Sickels, How bad is the Chris Marrero breaking ball problem?

by Prospectplus on Jun 3, 2006 5:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Marrero
I am more worried about nagging injury concerns with Marrero than breaking ball problems.

He has had recurring hammy problems.

As well as questions about inconsistency.
