ARod over Glaus?
Glaus has a near 1.00 OPS.   A-Rod has a near .900 OPS.    I don't think there's much of an argument you can make for A-Rod being an all star over Glaus.

this was a clear example of me not checking the stats.

Although, I'll be shocked if Glaus finishes the year with better stats.

Also cherry-picking stats.....
ARod has 45 Runs Created to Glaus's 41.
Mora is at 43, Blalock at 42.

There are a few guys you could easily make a case for, and ARod is one of them.

Those stats are from THT...
I think they use a slightly different version of Runs Created than standard.  I believe Glaus still has the advantage in standard RC.

Yeah, I did deliberate on that.  Sometimes You feel like picking the most deserving or the underdog, sometimes you just admire the incumbent too much.  Either way......

Freddy Sanchez over David Wright?  This is highly questionable.

Sanchez has the following line .338 / .376 / .483

Wright is at .336 / .406 / .564

Wright with 11 HR, 44 RBI, 9 SB

Freddy with 4 HR, 33 RBI, 1 SB

So, its MY ballot, not the most deserving ballot.

Don't worry...
I was even more of a homer than you with my voting, to the extent of voting for ex-Pirates in some cases.

And personally, I don't really care about voting for someone who might be undeserving. The game is an exhibition; even if someone completely undeserving was somehow voted in, what difference would it make?

The Mets haven't been home in more than a week, but Wright's ahead of Rolen now. Who would've ever thought that picking a 3B would be more difficult than 1B? I think everyone knows that someone deserving is getting screwed in the end...

Pronk
If we're picking DH's to play, Pronk deserves the spot a heck of a lot more than Papi.

Papi- .265/.370/.552/.922

Pronk- .316/.461/.646/1.107

It's not even close.  He's been the best DH/1B in the league other than Albert.

The reason...
...Papi gets my vote is his clutch hitting, which has continued again this season.  It goes beyond a simple OPS comparison.

And yes, I realize it is blasphemy to mention "the C word" in some circles, but I call it like I see it.

by SmokeyJoeWood on Jun 12, 2006 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

THT's Clutch
Clutch:
Hafner - 3.6
Ortiz - 1.9

Clutch
"Clutch" is the name we've given to the portion of Bill James's Runs Created formula that includes the impact of a batter's batting average with runners in scoring position and the number of home runs with runners on. The specific formula is Hits with RISP minus overall BA times at bats with RISP, plus HR with runners on minus (all HR/AB) times at bats with runners on. This stat is not a definitive description of "clutch hitting," just one way of looking at it.

Also, BAwRISP:
Hafner - .362
Oritz - .288

It's hard to use clutch hitting as a reason to take a spot away from Hafner.....

Shameless plug: Visit www.kevinappleby.com. Say hi.

by KevinApps on Jun 12, 2006 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions

I don't have the info in front of me, but
It would be interesting to see a comparison of the # of walkoff hits between the two, or the number of hits tying a game in the ninth.  (I mean real clutch, not some BP pet formula involving RISP in the 3rd inning of a 10-1 Cleveland rout of KC.)
I'm not sure how Hafner fares here, he might lead David there there as well this season, but I would be very surprised if he matches Ortiz in that department.

Hafner is having a monster season, and has great stats.  If I was playing Diamond Mind, he'd be my guy.  If I needed a guy to hit in the 9th of a real game, it'd be Ortiz.

by SmokeyJoeWood on Jun 12, 2006 11:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Close and Late
In Close and Late situations:
Hafner - 33 PA - .360/.515/.760, but just 2 HR, 3 RBI
Ortiz - 34 PA - .225/.294/.677 with 4 HR, 9 RBI

You like the counting stats or the rate stats?  Still tough to use a 1.275 OPS in Close and Late situations against Hafner....

Nice job with the stas.  It's clear Hafner deserves the start.  Papi is great no doubt but Hafner is hitting better.

Write Nick Swisher in!!!!
He's been in a mini slump lately, but seems to be breaking out of it. He has a 6 game hit streak goin. Yesterday he hit a homer. It was inside the park, but that's OK since Johnny Damon robbed him of another won over the wall in the same game.

Anyways, the thing that kills me is that he's not even on the ballot (along with Alexis Rios). That's just stupid:

My thoughts
Don't know if anyone has addressed - but I thought pitchers were picked by the coaches?

The Royals - it is like the year Lance Carter had to represent TB!!

AL

C - Ramon Hernandez - for total package this guy may have the smoothest throw to 2B
1B - Broussard or Konerko (Hafner for offense)
2B - Cano
3B - Glaus
SS - Tejada
OF - Suzuki
OF - Sizemore (15+doubles, 5 triples, 12 dingers)
OF - Wells

AL OF is much deeper than NL - arguments could be made for Rios, Manny, Vlad, Crawford or Dye.

NL

C - Johnny Estrada - I love the Cubs but Barrett should not even be on the field compiling stats for that sucker punch
1B - Pujols but in place of him - Berkman or Howard
2B - Utley
SS - Renteria (gotta love Eckstein though)
3B - Ensberg (Cabrera or Wright too)
SS - Omar Vizquel
OF - Bay
OF - Soriano
OF - Beltran

Also - for KC - Doug Mienkiewicz is probably their best player this year but given that there is no DH - Ortiz and Hafner have to get in too so it is really hard to pick who will be their representation.

by slickwdb on Jun 12, 2006 1:22 PM EDT reply actions

Royals...
It will likely be whomever their best reliever is. That's usually the way that it works with really bad teams.

by calig23 on Jun 12, 2006 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Have you looked at their relievers?
Elmer Dessens has the lowest ERA at 3.90 over 32 innings with 3 wins and 1 save.  At least the year Carter went for TB, he had double digit saves.

If Bob Keppel can get a couple more good starts in before the all-start break - the 24 year old may have to be their representation.

Offensively - Reggie Sanders and his .302 OBP?  Maybe Esteban German and his 100 at bats and 5 different positions?

About the only guy in contention if he can hit decently for the next couple weeks might be Emil Brown.

The Royals are absolutely horrible.  As a Cubs fan, I feel a lot better now after looking over their roster.

by slickwdb on Jun 12, 2006 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

"As a Cubs fan, I feel a lot better..."
Don't.  Once the Cubs get healthy, it may be different, but not until then.  The Cubs are truly among the worst teams in baseball, and they've got twice the payroll & probably 30x the commercial fanbase (based on geographic region alone).

by Azteca on Jun 12, 2006 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Abreu
I know the power is not there this year, but it's tough to omit the best OBP in the NL from the all-star team.

by tonyinstl on Jun 12, 2006 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

It's real easy
Bonds has a .473 OBP - do we vote him in?  Abreu is 9 points ahead of Jason Bay who doesn't have 1/2 the team around him that Abreu does.  He just isn't one of the top 3 for me this year.  He is a great player but I still think Bay, Soriano and even Matt Holliday have done more to deserve spots in the starting line-up.

by slickwdb on Jun 12, 2006 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Abreu
I think if Bonds had the same amount of ABs Abreu had, and maybe some less IBBs, then yes, I think he'd be a solid choice.  Bay is definitely a cut above anyone else this year, but I think I'd opt for Abreu's OBP edge over Soriano's massive power year - and especially over a guy like Holliday, where the OPS is still fairly tight.

nobody thinks Swisher is deserving
THe question of who will be the A's representative is actually a good one.

Swisher is clearly deserving of at least a backup role, but Ozzie will take Dye for sure (since Dye probably won't win enough votes to start). Chavez is very deserving as well, he's the best defender and one of the best hitters... A-Rod will start, and Glaus deserves to go as well... But Ozzie (that stupid fu*k) will take Crede.. (he's been on the record saying he will bring as many White Sox as he can, he doesn't care).

That leaves the A's with the possibility of Barry Zito. Before his last two starts, he had some of the best numbers. AFter June 1 his ERA was 2.87, and his peripherals have been great (except for the walk total, which is now completely blown up thanks to facing Cleveland and NY consecutively). Now he's got a 3.53 ERA with 69 hits in 89 innings, 66 K's, and a now inflated (7 walks last start) 43 walks. He has actually been terribly inconsisten with the walks so far.  He's 7-3, so maybe Ozzie would be stupid enough to put him in. But he'll be taking Buerhle and Contreras, Santana and Halladay....

Serious Question
Why has no one given Cano the nod for AL 2B?

He leads the AL 2B in average and only Lopez from Seattle is putting up significantly higher power numbers.

Roberts does not deserve it this year especially with all the time he missed.

If anyone deserves it other than Cano - it is Lopez from Seattle.

by slickwdb on Jun 12, 2006 6:48 PM EDT reply actions

OPS: 774
That's good for a second baseman, but that's not the best. OTOH, nobody in the AL has been very good at the 2B position... And Brian Roberts was injured. But Lopez beats him.. Those are great power numbers. If Cano was any good at defense, i might change my mind.

Basically, i came to the same conclusion as you. This post was irrelevant.

My thoughts
There are no AL second basemen really stepping up, but I am sick and tired of the attention Cano gets here and in the media.  Sweet Lord, he hits .300 with no walks and no power and is one of the worst defensive second basemen in the game. it's terrible.

He is the epidome of an empty batting average.

Now, on the other hand, I would probably vote for him because the AL second basemen this year are terrible.

Roberts over Cano
Cano has had slightly better (or more accurately, slightly less terrible) power numbers than Roberts, but Roberts is 15/18 in SB, so I'd say those two cancel each other out.

Cano has a slightly higher average, but Roberts has 40 points of OBP on him which is a pretty huge advantage.

The missed time by Roberts makes it closer, but I still think he's been the more valuable player than Cano (and VORP agrees).

I think it's a tossup between Roberts, DeRosa, and Lopez right now, with Cano on the outside looking in.  Unfortunately, the Yankee vote may mean that Cano will get the spot.

Serious about Nick Johnson?
I know I am nit-picking however, personally - Johnson is about 5th on my list:

Pujols
Berkman
Howard
Nomar
Nick Johnson/Delgado

About the only thing he has on any of the other guys is OBP while he is way behind in HR's, RBI's, etc.  You have 3 first basemen that will go into the all-start break with 20-25+ HR's and almost double the RBI's that Johnson has.  Nomar has a .356 BA and more RBI's and about the same 2B's.  Johnson is having a nice season but I think he is way behind the top 3 for sure.

by slickwdb on Jun 14, 2006 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Johnson
Johnson's ranks among NL 1B:
Steals - 1st
Runs Created - 2nd (Pujols)
RC/27 - 2nd (Pujols)
OBP - 2nd (Pujols)
Runs - 2nd (Pujols)
Hits - 2nd (Fielder)
Doubles - 2nd (Nomar)
Walks - 2nd (Pujols)
OPS - 3rd (Pujols, Berkman)
Avg - 3rd (Berkman, Pujols)
XBH - 3rd (Pujols, Fielder)
SLG - 4th (Pujols, Berkman, Howard)
HR - T-5th (Pujols, Howard, Delgado, Berkman)
RBI - 10th

If you want to look at the sexy HR/RBI numbers (like most All-Star voters do), then Johnson stands no chance.  If you look at overall production, Johnson is a fine choice.  You could still make a case for Berkman or Howard (especially Berkman),  but I don't think he's as ridiculous a pick as you make him out to be.

Shameless plug: Visit www.kevinappleby.com. Say hi.

He is having a good season
But he is not 2nd best in the NL - he has the fewest total bases with the most plate appearances of the top 5, fewest sac flies, barely beats Berkman on RC27 by .03 and is 5th in ISOP.

He is 1 SB ahead of Derek Lee who only had 44 ab's.  We're talking about 6 SB's versus 4 for young Prince and 2 for someone else and 5 for Derek Lee so it is hardly a determining factor in all-star worthiness.

All I am saying is that I disagree with you and think that at least Berkman is clearly ahead of Johnson.

by slickwdb on Jun 14, 2006 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

why so obtuse?
Here's how NL 1Bmen rank in BP's VORP and THT's Runs-Created & WinShares:

name.......vorp.....RC.....WS
Pujols.....38.5.....65.....19
NJohnson...28.9.....53.....10
Berkman....25.7.....53.....12
NomarG.....24.2.....45.....09
Howard.....21.7.....39.....08
Fielder....16.7.....39.....08
Delgado....15.0.....46.....07

In all categories, behind Pujols, Nick & Lance are about even.

Obtuse
That word always reminds me of Shawshank Redemption.

by SmokeyJoeWood on Jun 14, 2006 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

didn't intend to sound mean
it's just that total bases is a step along the way to slugging pct., and immensely affected by home runs.  No, Nick doesn't lead the NL in the power-bat categories, but that doesn't mean his bat isn't productive.

In fact, if you haven't noticed, the Nats are well on their way to a .500 record, thanks to guys like Nick....after going something like 8-18 through April.

by Azteca on Jun 14, 2006 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

So
If they are close in most categories but 1 guy has a lot more HR's and RBI's - then in my opinion that puts his ahead.  Whether by 1 run or 50 runs - it is a win and I think Berkman is more deserving.

by slickwdb on Jun 14, 2006 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Clearly?
That's the problem.
I made a call between two players that have been very similar in value this season, but in different ways.  It's your assertion that Berkman is "clearly" better that has ruffled me.  If you had simply left it as "Berkman is more deserving, IMO," then we're fine because I can certainly see your viewpoint and understand where you're coming from.  But by any measure of production (not just power), they're very close, so your statement about being clearly better loses its luster somewhat.
