David Pauley?

Red Sox are calling up David Pauley from AA to start for DWells on Wednesday.  He doesn't appear in John's top 20 for the Bosox (or Pads).

Anyone know anything about him other than he's 2.39 in 10 starts at Portland?

He's almost 23 and seemed to have pretty solid numbers for the Pads in the low minors.  He came over in the Dave Roberts trade.

Check over at soxprospects.com

Pauley has good potential, but he is not a top prospect by any means.  His ceiling is probably a #3 starter.  Good fastball and a great curve

#5 guy
Very hittable and doesnt K many. Has good control though and okay stuff. Should be a little better than Dinardo or Alvarez

I love those soxprospects scouting reports:

"an excellent changeup, and a top-notch curveball"

Re:...
Yeah, they're a little... optimistic... on a lot of our guys.  Gotta love em, though

Scouting reports
Those scouting reports are based on being major league quality and better than the average minor leaguer.

They do not mean to imply that his pitches are top not major league pitches but that they are positives in his arsenal and at least major league average.

If you read about most of the posts on soxprospects.com, he projects to be a #3 at best, but most likely a 4 or 5 starter.

re:
So his changeup is excellent and curve is top notch compared to the average minor leaguer?

Hey
Maybe he can teach Beckett a thing or two on not giving up back-to-back homers to the Blue Jays.

maybe a #3 starter in double-A
Pauley's only getting this shot because Abe Alvarez is scheduled to start at Pawtucket and they don't want to start a lefty against the Blue Jays (for good reasons).

I honestly think the "ceiling as a #3 starter" is being too generous. Pauley doesn't walk many guys, but that's all he has going for him. He's just too hittable.

Not really.
He's getting the start because Abe Alvarez isn't eligible to be called up. And today would be Pauley's scheduled day to pitch.

He has a good sinker. Maybe he can be a nice #4.

And he only has allowed 54 hits in 60.33 inning in AA, this year. Struck out 47, too. That isn't too hittable. He's not dominant by any stretch of the imagination, but I wouldn't say he's just too hittable.

I don't see why he can't be a 6 K/9, 2.5 BB/9 guy with a pretty good sinker and decent changeup.

yes really.
K,
They could have called up Alvarez because they put someone on the DL so the 15-day rule doesn't apply. They didn't call up Alvarez because Toronto mases lefties.
