Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Pedro Beato, back you go.

From Newsdsay...

"Last night's midnight deadline passed without the Mets reaching a contract agreement with former Xaverian High School righthander Pedro Beato, so last year's 17th-round draft pick will go back into the draft."

If this is true, that's a terrible job by the Mets, who are without a 1st round pick.

the deadline
i thought the deadlne for draft and follows is tuesday night at 12 ET?

nope
It's always the Monday night, as far as I know.

Baseball America keeps saying Beato will go in the first round, but now he has signability questions. Aren't teams going to think "If the Mets couldn't sign him, how can we?"  He had to be asking for quite a lot for the Mets to back off because they clearly wanted to get a deal done.

The deadline for Weaver and Drew last year was Monday night. Hochevar is in the same situation.

Related question
This doesn't apply to Beato, but does anybody know if the DRays were able to sign up Bryan Morris?

They Blew It
A first round talent which they should have signed. Definately adds to a weak draft, in which i can see him going 10-15 now. What projections to other people have on him?

well I'm baffled
Newsday says the deadline has passed. LA Times says it hasn't. Nothing from Baseball America yet.

BEcause of holiday.

Damn
I so hate Vince Naimoli.

by ultxmxpx on May 30, 2006 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

blame game
Everything can't be blamed on Naimoli.

Sternberg had a chance to step up to the plate and didn't. There's no excuse for it. I seriously doubt Morris asked for $4-5 million because it's fairly obvious he isn't a top 10 candidate... so all signs point to Sternberg not ponying up the money to sign him.

Even at $2-3 million, he's a solid pick just 1 year removed from HS and dominating JuCo competition.

Rays in '08....

I know...
some blame needs to go to Sternberg and company, but at this point we just don't know why he didn't sign, as was said at Raysbaseball.com.

If he was asking 2+ million I'd give him the words of Dick Cheney: "Go ---- yourself." Well, that might have been harsh, but whatever. No picks out of the top 10 got 2 or more million last year. It'll be interesting to see what he gets when he's redrafted. Is there any chance he goes to an SEC school like he reportedly was saying and plays two years there?

Re
* Several high-profile draft-and-follows were still playing the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. That included the 10 players under control at Yavapai (Ariz.) Junior College, a list that includes outfielder Shane Keough (Athletics) and infielder Milton Loo (Reds). Those players have until 48 hours after their team's final game to sign.

Beato...
This is disappointing of course, but I think in a normal year Beato signs. He's just trying to take advantage of a week draft class, and who can blame him? Still though, what are the odds he gets more than whatever the Mets offered? Does he have other College options to explore if he doesn't get what he's looking for? I guess we'll know shortly, but from what everyone is saying the next draft won't be quite as kind. It's not as if this move isn't a risk on his part either...
