Depends
on how long term it is.
If it goes many years I take Fernando Martinez

Matsu seems like he'll come over soon and be at least average

I dont love Iannetta but Cs are hard to find and he could get Coors inflation if he stays inthe org.

Neshek looks like he could be in the bigs now and an above average or better reliver soon

Ellsbury, Riemold and Brignac would also be solid picks.

some quick thoughts
thanks for the input..

thats 2 votes for Matsuzaka, but i might take a few guys before him because i'm  99% certain he won't be here until his free agent year, which makes a pretty big difference and not much different from a guy like Uehara, whose just as talented

also, i originally thought Brignac was the easy first choice but he's been a little stagnant recently .. his avg dropped to 324 and he's at 8 hr's - still really good for a 20 year old... but then i look at Ianetta hitting .304 with 6 hr's in AA. wouldn't that make him a much better prospect if he plays @ coors?

Brignac
He's had a mere 6 day mediocre period.

I'd pick him...
Fernando Martinez
& probably Reimold
I'm too lazy to type why.

I would take brignac over ianetta. I'm lucky enought to have both on one of my sim teams so i'm not to bias.

They are both solid young players, but from a fantasy prospective the fact that Ianetta is a catcher hurts you a bit. He will end up playing about 120 games where Brignac will play closer to 150.

go for upside
Marcus Sanders
Reid Brignac
Fernando Martinez

Marcus Sanders will play 2B for the Giants in a couple of years, especially with a middle infield full of Vizquel/Durham's and a weak SF farm system in terms of position players. He's the next coming of Kenny Lofton, but with a lower batting average.

Reid Brignac will probably have to move to 3B, but his bat will carry him to any position. His plate discipline was the only concern going into the season and he has seemed to fix that.

Fernando Martinez is just special so far. The kid has every tool imaginable and amazing plate discipline for a 17 year old.

If you want just premium position players though, take Iannetta for the Coors effect even though I don't see him having a long career as a starting catcher. Brandon Snyder who might stick at catcher for the O's could be a good choice for the long-term as well.

Most of these other guys don't stand out with any major fantasy talent except Matsuzaka. They are normal, everyday 15-25HR guys with low SB's and a decent average. AKA their ceiling is that of a regular everyday player. None of them are a sure thing, so go for the upside players.

Brignac, Jurrjens, Bianchi
Brignac is projectable at SS, 3B and LF both offensively and defensively (though errors have been an issue for him).  Intangibles are good from everything I've read, so make-up seems to be solid.  I also just have a gut feeling about him.

Jurrjens is one of the more intriguing young pitchers for me.  I really like the way he has handled himself since being drafted.  I like that he has suppressed HRs thus far, has a strong K/BB, and appears to be improving every year.  I don't think the #s are an illusion.

Bianchi seems like a grinder at SS, and I like that in my SS's.  The End.

sanders...
  1. Marcus Sanders - for fantasy purposes, he is my No. 1 choice easily. If you can look past the .221 average so far in 2006, the other numbers are very solid - 33 games, 30 Runs, 7 2b, 1 3b, 14/4 SB/CS, 22 BB. He will hit, take a walk and is a terror on the basepaths. I would like to see a bit more extrabase power out of him, but I think that will come. He likely ends up at 2b and could put up 10-15 HR and 50+ SB annually.
  2. Daisuke Matsuzaka - when he comes over to America, the hype will be unbelievable (especially if he lands on a big-market club like the Yankees, Mets, etc.) He has some miles on his arm, but should have great value as a trading chip down the road.
  3. Reid Brignac - this one is a toss-up for me because I really like Reimold and Fernando Martinez' potential is tempting, but Brignac should be swinging a big bat (likely at 3b)...

Ditto
Matsuzaka is a gamble, and might go all Hideo Nomo when he gets here because he's been so badly overused, but he does have top-10 pitcher upside, and he'll show his upside immediately when he comes over.  Sanders, Brignac, Martinez and Reimold clearly stand over the rest, and I'd say Sanders and Brignac are the guys due to position scarcity.  I'm not sure Reimold will be that far above average as an outfielder, and Martinez is just so far away, unless you're allowed to hold a player forever.  If you can, I'd consider taking him over Brignac.

Actually
I didn't read the full list well enough.  I'd probably put Hernandez and Snyder in that possibility category too, but I'd still stick with the three I said because (for Snyder) catchers have the lowest chance of panning out and take the longest to develop of any position and (for Hernandez) there are so many pitching prospects of similar caliber with the Marlins that it's tough to guarantee that he'll be anything more than a reliever by the time he hits the majors.

Brignac, Martinez, Reimold
Depending on how long you want to wait.  I'd say Brignac is the best pick in terms of balancing ETA and potential.  Martinez is the roll-the-dice on potential pick.  Reimold has star potential and the possibility to move faster because he's an NCAA player who has made a fast transition to the wooden bats.

Brandon Snyder is another high-risk high-reward pick, and we could be talking about him as the best catching prospect in the majors in a year or two.  He's another guy who's a long ways off though.  He's shown poor plate discipline, and there's always the concern as to whether he'll stick behind the plate, but 18-year-old .883 OPS catchers are worth watching at the least.

Bianchi and Sanders are solid picks, just not better than Brignac, Reimold, Martinez, or Snyder.

The pitchers here are definately a step down from the position players.  The only two I'd consider would be Gaby and Daisuke.  Then again, Gaby hasn't even transitioned to A+ well yet, and it's no sure thing that Daisuke will be coming stateside any time soon.  I'd take them only if Brignac, Reimold, Martinez, and Snyder were all gone.

Don't forget Ellsbury
But it really depends on your fantasy format.  If you need SB, Ellsbury's your guy.  If you're in a league that devalues SB (Like me), maybe you wanna stay away from him.  BUt still, steals are rare, and Jacoby could provide them in spades.

He has good patience, but will never hit for power.

thanks
Brignac was taken with the pick before me...

so i went with Marcus Sanders .. thanks to those who mentioned his fantasy potential and the value  of sb's ..

forgot to mention - i'm not drafting on any positional or statistical need, just the best fantasy player available (preferably short-term, but long-term is ok) and/or tradability  .. i naturally think everyone should draft this way

my other pick is 10 picks away. after reading over the thread, i narrowed it down to these:

Ellsbury
F Martinez
Jurrjens
Matsuzaka
Reimold

my main concern is - i wish there was more info available on Martinez out there.....

Snyder, Bianchi, and/or Patterson could be available in next years draft.. and Neshek on the league's waivers after he gets called up.. so i think i can afford to pass on those players

Jurjjens should be available next year too, but i think his status could skyrocket between now and then, so im tempted to get him...

and nobody mentioned Kevin Kouzmanoff ??  .. a 420 avg in AA .. is he a legit break-out?

1 last thing about Matsuzaka - last i remember, he's not a Free Agent until 2009 .. i think thats the year we'll finally see him in an Mlb uniform  .. the Yakult swallows is the one team who actually agreed to post their players in 2007 - Akinori Iwamura IF and Hirotoshi Ishii RP - their both starting to look like much better short-term investments then Matsu....

thanks for all the help!

I like Kouz
but hes old and his upside doesnt match some of the other guys on the list plus hes far back in line for  the Indians 3b job and thats really all he can play, except maybe 1b or LF where he isnt really needed.

Martinez and Reimold are your guys
Martinez has shown such great discipline at such a young age and his tools are excellent.  I'd draft him because with these late-round picks, upside is the name of the game.

If Reimold and Snyder go undrafted, definately keep tabs on them.  Bianchi and Jurrgens as well.  All have nice potential.
