MOD II: Rangers

Here's a list of 20-plus players I took from the Baseball America draft lists for further discussion:

Drew Stubbs, OF, Texas
Matt LaPorta, 1b, Florida
Chad Tracy, C, Pepperdine
Wes Hodges, 3b, Georgia Tech
Matt Antonelli, 3b, Wake Forest
Max Scherzer, rhp, Missouri
Joba Chamberlin, rhp, Nebraska
Daniel Bard, rhp, North Carolina
Ian Kennedy, rhp, Southern California
Kyle McCulloch, rhp, Texas
Greg Reynolds, rhp, Stanford
Mark Melancon, rhp, Arizona
Dallas Buck, rhp, Oregon State
Clayton Kershaw, lhp, Highland Park HS
Kyle Drabek, rhp, The Woodlands HS
Chris Tillman, rhp, Fountain Valley HS
Chris Marrero, 3b, Monsignor Pace HS
Brett Anderson, lhp, Stillwater HS
Jordan Walden, rhp, Mansfield HS
Hank Conger, c, Huntington Beach HS
Travis Snider, of, Jackson HS

I think all these players will be taken before the Rangers select at #12; still, I thought they were worthy of discussion as well:

Evan Longoria, 3b, Long Beach State
Andrew Miller, lhp, North Carolina
Brad Lincoln, rhp, Houston
Brandon Morrow, rhp, California
Tim Linceum, rhp, Washington

Of this group, I'd like to narrow it down to around 5-10 names that we'll strongly consider taking at #12. If anyone thinks there's a player I left off that needs to be included, feel free to mention him in your post.

The original MOD is here:

Again, picks at 12, 88, 118, and 148.

My thoughts
Of the first list of 21, the five I like best are:

Stubbs
Scherzer
Kershaw
Drabek
Snider

And I'd probably rank them Scherzer, Kershaw,  Drabek, Stubbs, Snider.

I'd be wary of taking one of the two catchers.  I think taking a catcher in the first round is a big risk.

I like LaPorta, but he's been been pretty bad this year, hitting just .248.  Kennedy has also been underwhelming, and like LaPorta, is a Boras client.

My pick
We'll here's my 5 in order

Drew Stubbs
Max Scherzer, rhp, Missouri
Clayton Kershaw, lhp, Highland Park HS
Mark Melancon, rhp, Arizona
Chris Marrero, 3b, Monsignor Pace HS

Melancon just because he is the best reliever in the draft and that is a weak spot for them.

I'd also avoid the catchers since they just got Teagarden last year.

I like Marrero but I could see a team like the O's getting him before #12 comes up.

My five
Clayton Kershaw, lhp, Highland Park HS
Max Scherzer, rhp, Missouri
Greg Reynolds, rhp, Stanford
Luke Hochevar, rhp, Tennessee
Drew Stubbs, of, Texas

I also like Joba Chamberlain, though I have concerns about his weight; Brandon Morrow, Jeremy Jeffress, and Jordan Walden.

Josh Morris, 1B, Georgia

Rasmus
He was one of those "file away for later" names I didn't put on my list above. Definitely a player to consider in the 3rd round.

And both the "Mock Rangers" and real Rangers need to make that pick at #12 count, since they won't pick again until #88.

Seems like the consensus three
are Stubbs, Scherzer and Kershaw, though there's a chance all three will be gone by pick 12.

Not to complicate things, but a name not on your list that has been shooting up the draft charts is Bill Rowell.

My list
Right now, I'd concur that Stubbs, Scherzer, and Kershaw seem to be good value at #12. John's post about Jeremy Jeffress got me thinking about him as well. I'd originally intended to put him on the list above, but overlooked him. Hochevar is also on my radar, though I doubt he'll be around at 12.

So at the moment, here's my Top 10, assuming guys like Lincoln, Miller, Longoria, etc, are gone when we pick:

  1. Luke Hochevar
  2. Max Scherzer
  3. Clayton Kershaw
  4. Drew Stubbs
  5. Jeremy Jeffress
  6. Joba Chamberlain
  7. Brandon Morrow
  8. Jordan Walden
  9. Pedro Beato
  10. Bill Rowell

Drabek
I really would like to know more about his issues, because he looks like a stud to me.  Any word on if the Mets signed Beato?

Beato
The Mets did not sign him. BA has him at #13 on their current list.

Kershaw
I would jump on him if he falls to 12, but I don't see it happening
