Delmon Young # 3 prospect

I never thought I would see Delmon Young ranked by anyone as the # 3 prospect let alone the #3 OF prospect in baseball.

Dan Perry who I have mixed feelings on (love his writting disagree with him a bunch) has him as 3rd best OF prospect.

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/5616182

Has his stock really fallen that far or is this more of Milledge learning patience and Upton crusing in pro debut?

I shouldn't have to tell you this,
but Dayn Perry is terrible. He lost all credibility when he put Jake Fox ahead of Jason Hirsh and in the top 100. His Top 100 prospect list before the season was a joke.

by Ienpw on May 18, 2006 3:23 AM EDT reply actions

Fox
Hirsh is having a solid season at Triple A, but Fox is destroying the FSL to the tune of .341/.414/.638. It should be noted that he's 24 and we need to see what he can do at higher levels, but that's a great line for a catcher regardless. He's struggled with injuries during his pro career and has missed a significant amount of time, but he's hit well when healthy.
His plate discipline isn't great but he's got some nice pop.

I agree that Hirsh is a superior prospect, but I didn't see anybody else having Fox in their top 100 and it looks like Perry came up with sleeper gold.

Fox
doesnt have the glove to stay at SS. His numbers at 1B or CO would be subpar. He's repeating A+ too

by Ienpw on May 18, 2006 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

surely
you must lose some credibility, Ienpw, for calling Fox a shortstop?  :)

by Azteca on May 18, 2006 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah...
because the precise order a 100 player prospect list determines credibility

Image or mirage
He will continue to take public hits like this until he gets forgiven by the public, or whenever he starts doing something great!

It's not like he is leading the minors in Homers and Slugging like HUNTER PENCE though!!!!!!!!

by Shamus on May 18, 2006 3:57 AM EDT reply actions

that list
has two obvious players that have been left out.

Matt Kemp
Hunter Pence

I dont know how you can make a top 10 outfielders list without those two with the current seasons they are having.

by npurcell on May 18, 2006 4:56 AM EDT reply actions

yeah
I'd have them both ahead of Pie and co.

I'd probably put Fernando Martinez in the top 10 somewhere too.

by jeck on May 18, 2006 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions

um
Pie put up a 900+OPS in AA at 20 and hes got better tools.
I know its fashionable to treat K/BB as the be all end all of everything but Pie has better projection and performance

Perry
It seems it will be a cold day in hell before I actually agree with him on any of his rankings...

and you are qualified enough to actually say..
that hirsch is better than fox

Huh?
What about Dukes?  Wasn't there diaries posted on here arguing that he's actually as good or better then D-Young?  I don't think he's as good as D-Young, but at least close...top 10 worthy in my mind.

by bunner19 @ Minor League Ball on May 18, 2006 8:42 AM EDT reply actions

Dukes
I couldn't agree more.  Dukes is an elite OFer who looks as good of a bet right now as anyone on that list.

by FRANCHISEv2 on May 18, 2006 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Dukes
His personal issues will always haunt him in the mainstream media.  He's not in the top-10 despite putting up gaudy numbers in AAA.  Lastings Milledge is a year younger, so if you want to give him the nod because of age, that's fine, Dukes OPS is still .975, Milledge's is .865.

He is an elite talent and he Rays are going to have a big decision at the end of the year.  Do you trade Dukes and get less than market value because of his issues, or Rocco and get less than market value because of injuries?

Have to keep Dukes. He is cheaper and hasn't had the injury problems. The make up issues are troubling, but don't out way the risk of paying for a guy to sit on the DL.

Fox
C'mon guys, cut Perrry a break, it's not like Fox media has other credibility issues...

McCutchen vs Tabata
McCutchen: .300/.354/.480 - 26 K in 150 ABs (3 SB)

Tabata: .345/.396/.538 - 29 K in 145 ABs (6 SB)

without mentioning their ages..

by PooNani on May 18, 2006 10:18 AM EDT reply actions

nice comparison
both in the Sally, no?

by Azteca on May 18, 2006 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes,
both in the SAL: Hickory and Charleston.

by ultxmxpx on May 18, 2006 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

It's funny
because guess this prospect:

.319/.394/.511, 12 2B, 3 3B, 3 HR - 27 K in 141 AB (18 SB)

Thats Dexter Fowler, 20 years old. He might have the best body and projection out of the 3: McCutchen (5-11, 175), Tabata (5-11, 160), Fowler (6-4, 175)

by bballfanlvnv on May 18, 2006 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

You do
also have to factor in that McCutchen figures as a quality CF, while Tabata projects as a RF. But still, Tabata just looks terrific.

Lastings Milledge
His slugging isn't too great. He seems like a really streaky hitter.

by ultxmxpx on May 18, 2006 12:21 PM EDT reply actions

Norfolk..
He's been streaky in the past, but his team is just God awfull. I'm encouraged by his walk totals, but he's pretty much naked in that lineup. I'm not sure how much is his discipline improving, or if it's just other teams not letting him beat them...

These posts seem almost silly
Come on guys. Let's keep a little perspective Don't overeact to six weeks of minor league ball.

Kemp, Pence, Martinez . . .

I'm not sure these guys are all that much differnt than Reinold or Quentin.

And none of them look like perennial All-Stars

(At least in Quentin's case he's made it to AAA -- something many of the others named haven't done.)

But come on some of the players that have been mentioned ahere ren't really that much better than the players that Perry had on his list.

My only argument would be for Dukes -- but he's got personal problems that might reasonably keep him off a list too.

Let's not overrated to only six weeks of play. A top prospect list now shouldn't be that much different than a top prospects list in March.

Dukes
Are Dukes' anger issues any more of a problem than Delmon's?  The Bat incident isn't the first time he's had a problem and at least Dukes doesn't tlk like he's God's gift to baseball.
God rested one day out of 7, Felix rests 4 out of 5.

Dukes
Dukes' f*-up resume is a bit longer than Delmon's.  A lot of it might be attributed to a rough life growing up, but still, he's had multiple incidents, just like his roommie.
