I will gladly help with the Mets if I am available that day.  If I am around I will post on the MOD thread (you can also try posting this on the seperate Mets Blog that is linked so people from other teams do not see what we are discussing...it is called like Amazing Avenue)

Max Scherzer
Mets could use more arms and Scherzer seems to be a guy that could fall

He
He won't fall if you keep bringing up his name!!!

What worked Last Year
John would keep the thread constantly updated with the picks so when it came to the Mets selection we would debate on here for the time limit (or people would list a couple of guys a few picks before so that we would get at least 1) and came to a consensus

Let's try to keep it here, but of course anyone is welcome to discuss on amazin avenue.  I also post on the www.amazinz.com message board.

For those that do not want to pay for BA
www.brewerfan.net has a decent draft section.  The ratings are not accurate after like the Top 30 as of now because it tends to be sorted by position, but it provides some good free info

Thoughts
What John Manuel thinks of a potential 2nd round pick for the Mets, Pedro Beato:

"He was their 17th-rounder last year out of Brooklyn and has really come on strong for coach Dave Pano at St. Petersburg JC. He's been in the mid-90s, and one scout told our Alan Matthews that Beato would go in the first half of the first round."

Manuel mentions he'd want first round money.  What do you guys think?  Should he fall, is he our guy?

by briands84 on May 17, 2006 12:27 PM EDT reply actions

He is our DFE (17th Round pick last year)
We retain his rights until one week prior to the draft.  We will know by June 4th if we have signed him

One player who I like, who will not fall though, is Brett Anderson.  For a HS LHP he is extremely polished.  Another player I like in the Round 4-5 area is Oregon State RHP Jonah Nickerson.  I am a bit of a stathead and although Dallas Buck gets the noteriety, Nickerson has been more productive

by mtk52983 on May 17, 2006 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Should signability be a concern?
Given the amount of money spent in the international market, should we look to rein back our spending a bit for the draft?

by briands84 on May 17, 2006 2:51 PM EDT reply actions

maybe a good idea
considering this doesnt look like the year that we'll be able to draft a superstar talent anyway...well not an obvious one at least...so it might not be a bad idea to pinch the pennies a bit in order to possibly 1) help sign more internationals this year  2) increase flexibility on the trade market this summer and the FA market this winter  3) just save for next years draft in case we somehow find ourselves with a nice pick and can draft a player asking for more

by Rob Castellano on May 17, 2006 6:50 PM EDT up reply actions

no
That's the opposite of what the Mets do. Because they're usually missing picks in the early round, the Mets have extra money to spend. That's why they were so aggressive in the Latin American market and it's why they took guys like Pelfrey and Niese in the draft. It's a philosophy I agree with. Instead of shying away from players with signability issues, we should be targeting them.

by jeck on May 17, 2006 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions

targets
so whats our target going to be here? pitching? IF depth? more outfielders?

i personally think that you can never go wrong with more pitching and the mets are pretty bereft of impact pitching right now...i can think of humber, pelfrey, soler, henry owens, jon niese, royce ring & deolis guerra

unfortunately a lot of the pitching talent is going to go off the board early with the lack of positional depth in the draft...however, a lot of the top guys are righties so im thinking maybe one of the top lefties drops? someone like wade leblanc (bama), nathan culp (mizzou), dave huff (az st) or tony watson (huskers)...probably in that order IMO...thats if any of them drop of course...the last 3 actually might since they also double as relievers...

by Rob Castellano on May 17, 2006 7:20 PM EDT reply actions

Pitching
Hey guys, I would think the Mets would go for pitching as mentioned previous we are definitely weak in that category, especially needed is guys who can move quickly.  I personally would go the college route, although I haven't seen to many accurate rankings to know where guys might go.  It's tough to really gauge exactly who, but maybe we will get lucky and someone will fall to us that should have gone earlier.

Also Pedro Beato has definitely flown up the charts and is apparently being targeted in the first round.  Rumor has it though the Mets will go as high as 1.5million to sign him, which would seem fair as that would be late first round money I believe.

by Hojo4Life on May 18, 2006 10:01 AM EDT reply actions

other players to watch
while i still think starting pitching should be the target, its never a bad idea to take a first round talent at any position who drops too far either due to injuries, a slow start or like someone mentioned earlier signability issues

i know a lot of people think highly of AZ closer mark melancon since he could breeze through the minors a la chad cordero or craig hansen...and his stock is dropping due to a recent ligament sprain so he may drop to us

then there are a few hitters, scott sizemore, danny payne & mark hamilton...hamilton has been discussed as a sleeper with first round talent who has displayed a good eye and some really good pop and may drop into the second round...sizemore was an early season favorite who hasn't put up great numbers this year...and payne is georgia tech's leadoff hitter who showed this season that he can bat for average and power as well but just went down with an injury for 4-6 weeks...all of these guys could be good finds for the mets with either our 1st or maybe our 2nd or 3rd picks

kentucky 2b john shelby is another guy who is supposedly a 1st-2nd round talent, hes very athletic and can hit for good power for an infielder but is scaring teams away due to his shaky plate discipline so far this season...but IF is a weak point in the mets system so this could be another diamond in the rough for us

by Rob Castellano on May 18, 2006 1:44 PM EDT reply actions

Here is an intriguing guy in Round 2
The write-up below is courtesy of mlb.com
He sounds a lot like Jose Reyes except his college numbers that he walks more and strikes out less (though we know that college numbers are not always the best predictor).  His error numbers are a bit high, but maybe moving him to 2B would help

Emmanuel Burris, SS, Kent State
The junior speedster has been a force on the basepaths for some time and has continued to dominate once again this season. He's leading the Mid-American Conference in steals, swiping twice as many bases as his nearest competitor. Some consider him the fastest player in college today -- a tough claim to prove. What is known, though, is that he gets on base and causes trouble when he's there. He was the Most Valuable Player of the Cape Cod League playoffs last season after leading the circuit in hits (52) and stolen bases (35). He also finished third in runs scored (28). Defensively, he's sound and looks as though he'll get gobbled up somewhere in the second or third round.

"Obviously, he's a speed player but I don't think he's going to stay at shortstop," one Major League scouting director said. "He plays on turn now, so he has that going for him. I see him down the road as a second baseman or a center fielder. The attraction with him, though, is that you know you have a slam-dunk Major Leaguer. The insurance with him is pretty good. I feel pretty good about all the signs with him. He's a good player."

nice
i'm not familiar with him but from that writeup he sounds like a great pick to me, if not with our first then with the second for sure

by Rob Castellano on May 18, 2006 11:21 PM EDT up reply actions

We do not have a 1st Round pick
And there is no way he is falling to our 3rd Round pick

by mtk52983 on May 19, 2006 8:05 AM EDT up reply actions

thats why i didnt say "round"
i meant our first pick, not our first ROUND pick...so basically im hoping he'll drop into the second round especially since teams like to pursue power hitters in the first couple of rounds...and the scout in this report says it himself, burris could drop to the 3rd round so it is not an impossibility...so maybe we can get him with our second pick (not our second ROUND pick)

by Rob Castellano on May 19, 2006 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I read on another MOD thread
That Baseball America has him rated as a late 1st Round pick.  If someone has BA and can check that, it would be much appreciated.  I apologize for my misinterpretation of what you wrote

by mtk52983 on May 19, 2006 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

no prob
and with the skills it sounds like burris has, i wouldn't be surprised if he was snapped up well before the 62nd pick...but if not, we should be all over him...i think we're gonna have to hope that maybe a prep player gets overlooked because the name of the game with this draft is most definitely college pitching

i really like chris marrero but theres NO way hes dropping to us and i'm gonna keep my fingers crossed that somehow fellow HS 3B bill rowell drops, OF travis snider too, but they looks unlikely as well...so more realistically theres guys like chris parmalee & lars anderson (who i really like) at 3B, maybe marcus lemon or john shelby at 2B and i like cedric hunter in the OF and none of them would really be reaching for the 2nd round...then theres outfield bats like mark

by Rob Castellano on May 19, 2006 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

whoops didnt get to finish
i was going to say mark hamilton (who is a 1B bat, not OF), brian boesch or chris errecart...all college guys who did not live up to high expectations coming into the season

good idea
in fact i was starting to develop one of my own, first position by position, then an aggregate list of each player by rank...just didn't know if i should post anything or not because we'd essentially be making public all of the homework we've done...but i think i'll get something together over the next few days and i'll post when i'm done

Awesome, thanks Rob.,

I re-subscribed to BA and will be coming up with my own board sometime tonight.

I have a lot of stuff this week
But if I get a chance I will post some of my board here.  I will say this though, as you can probably tell from my posts already, Burris is my top MI in this draft, granted that probably only puts him in the latter part of Round 1 to the early part of Round 2

Great lists...outside of your pitchers and overall rankings I am pretty much in agreement.  The more I hear about Kyle Drabek, the more he sounds like Allison/Josh Hamilton.  I hope we pass on him.  I also think you have samardzija way too high.  For someone of his hype, I would have expected more.  Among your pitchers I would also include prep LHP Matt Petiton of Garden City (NY) HS.  Might be a tough sign because he has a commitment to UNC, but I think he is a sleeper.  There are a number of other pitchers I am keeping tabs on that you do not have on your list, but I want to keep this post a reasonable length.  Guys like Jason Stoffel and Josh Thraikill I do not  see on your list.  I guess that underscores how deep the pitching talent is this year.  Among the hitters missing that I have on my list are Jim Negrych/2B/Pittsburgh and Stephen King, a prep SS from Florida.  I might find more as I do some more research

by mtk52983 on May 22, 2006 5:13 PM EDT reply actions

yeah
i forgot to add stephen king to my overall list, hes on that infielders list...i like him though

havent come across a couple of those names (petiton & thraikill) but ive heard of stoffel, just forgot to put him on there...same goes for negrych, i really liked him and completely forgot him, he'd probably be high on the infielders list...and probably right around john shelby on the overall list

so on draft day, how are we going to decide if there is some sort of clash in opinions? maybe a poll? or is it the farm directors final decision?

Last Year
Was basically everyone who was interested spoke up and then we went by consensus.  Usually it was not much of a problem because there were all of like 3 people and it worked out that everyone had similar players in mind so it went very smoothly

Here are more on some of the players
From UNC's website on Petiton (form November)

Matt Petiton, Garden City, N.Y., Garden City, LHP, 6-0/175
One of the premier left-handed pitchers in the country * Ranked one of the top 20 prospects in the prestigious East Coast Professional Showcase * Ranked No. 31 prospect in the nation by Team One Baseball * Ranked as the No. 62 prospect in the nation by Baseball America. Coach Fox on Petiton: "Matt was very highly recruited by many great programs. He is a very polished pitcher that throws three pitches for strikes. He also possesses a great pick-off move. Matt can be as good as Matt wants to be. He has the potential to be a weekend starter for us, and we are counting on Matt to make an immediate impact."
--------------------------------------------------
From brewerfan.net on Petiton

It's hard to find a more well-rounded pitching prospect than Petiton. He doesn't have the biggest frame, or the biggest fastball, but the collective aspects of his game makes up for one intriguing lefty. His fastball works well in the 87-89 range, and he snaps off a pretty good low-70s curveball. His changeup checks in around 80, giving him the perfect blend of speeds on his polished three-pitch arsenal. He has a quick arm that offers a fair amount of deception, and he also has a very good pickoff move. If scouts and scouting directors choose to pass on him early, he may be a tough sign given his commitment to North Carolina.
--------------------------------------------------
brewerfan.net on Josh Thrailkill

Thrailkill might just have the most projectable frame of any draft-eligible player available for the 2006 draft. Built long, wiry and strong at 6'4", 185 pounds, Thrailkill already is good now, but he's the type of player that leaves so much to your imagination just dreaming about how good he could become. His repertoire starts with his fastball, which has been clocked in the mid-90s and regularly sits right around 90 mph. He has shown the ability to spot his fastball very well, which sets up his curveball and changeup perfectly. Both secondary pitches could use more work, which is a common sentiment among any young pitcher, but both pitches have a strong foundation for added improvement. Thrailkill has committed to play for the Clemson Tigers.

More on Petiton
Thanks to the wonders of Google, I was able to turn up this article from Baseball America on Petiton at the East Coast Professional Showcase.  If he lasts until Round 4 or 5 we could have a sleeper here IMO

One of a bevy of southpaws who emerged at the event was Matthew Petiton from Garden City (N.Y) High. Petiton features a deliberate delivery with a high leg kick that evokes Dontrelle Willis. Petiton's fastball sat in the high 80s and he controlled it, as well as his secondary stuff, impressively. His command wavered when he pitched from the stretch, but he boasts a wicked pickoff move.

Another Pitcher to add
Kevin Mulvey/RHP/Villanova

I would like to thank Baseball America for alerting him to me.  His record his not good, but it is not for a lack of performance on his part.  By far Villanova's top starter this year, Mulvey allowed less than 1 hit per IP and showed very nice command with 88 K's and only 23 BB's in 92 1/3 IP.  A bit undersized at 6'1" 170, according to Baseball America he has sound mechanics and plus stuff.  Might be a possibility in the Round 4 or 5 area for a less risky pick

Maybe I am obssessing a bit with numbers
But in looking up a senior C who threw out over 50% of would-be base stealers, I came across this guy, a Junior RHP from Old Dominion

Jason Godin/RHP/Old Dominion
G - 14
GS - 14
W - 8
L - 2
CG - 5
SHO - 2
ERA - 4.26
IP - 105 2/3
H - 108
R - 54
ER - 50
BB - 31
K - 141 (by my calculation that is like 12 K/9 IP)

interesting
that looks like a name to remember for the later rounds...however he may be a tough sign based on what looks like a good but not great junior year...he might want to go back and increase his draft stock...

another intriguing MI
hawaiian-born ss milton loo who is playing now in a juco wood-bat league...reds drafted him last year as a draft and follow in the 9th and still have the rights to him but hes playing really well right now and if they don't sign him before the draft, i think he could be a very interesting later round pick...heres the report i read:

Loo was the first prep player picked out of Hawaii in 2004, and he has been the best prospect in Arizona's wood-bat junior-college conference the last two seasons. He led Yavapai to a 49-10 record and No. 2 national ranking into early May, though he wasn't the team's best player statistically.

Loo, whose native island of Molokai is so small and rural that it has no stoplights, entices scouts with five-tool potential. Though his present power remains below average, his ability to cover the plate, make consistent, hard contact and repeat his short stroke make hitting his best tool. His raw power could profile him for third base. He moved to that position at Yavapai, but scouts agree he could play short or any other infield position as a pro thanks to above-average arm strength, excellent athleticism, good range and solid infield actions. After a rough start, he became an above-average defender at third in a short time this season.

If Loo's effort and performance were more consistent, he'd rank among the top position players available. He's a plus runner and solid baserunner, but he doesn't run out ground balls as often as scouts want to see. After being bothered by a strained thumb and gimpy ankle in 2005, Loo missed time late in the 2006 season when his elbow flared up. It was diagnosed as nerve irritation and he returned to DH in the postseason. Loo's durability will factor into whether or not the Reds--who offered him a reported bonus of more than $200,000 last summer--make another enthusiastic run at Loo.

The inconsistent effort concerns me
He has tools and has proven that he can be a contact hitter with wood bats, but if he does not work at it will he ever put it together?  While we are on the subject of DFEs it should be interesting to see who gets signed.  I am hoping we can get Beato signed.  The Brewers have a couple of DFEs that are definitely going to attract interest from teams if they do not get them signed.  One of them, Tim Smith, was drafted by the Mets 2 years ago but visa issues prevented the Mets from actually getting him signed.  Batting .450 in JuCo while leading his team in 2B and RBI.  Also is 2nd on his team in HR and 3B.  23 for 25 in stolen bases and has a very nice 32:18 BB:K ratio.  Another, LHP Michael Ramlow, is posting a sub 2.00 ERA in 41 1/3 IP with only 36 H, 10 BB, and 62 K (that is about 13+ K/9 IP)

yeah
either way, we should keep our eyes on those draft and follows, a lot of them will probably fall through the cracks and right into our hands, if we're ready that is...especially since some of these guys that we're talking about sound very interesting

by Rob Castellano on May 23, 2006 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions

as for loo
that effort concern is definitely something to watch and i don't love hearing stuff like that but in our position, all i can say is that beggars cannot be choosers...if we're going to stumble onto an impact player with our lack of early picks, it may have to be someone like this

as for his tools, it sounds like he could become a nice player with a very solid bat, especially if that power develops, and it also sounds like he can definitely handle the leather...who knows maybe the effort stuff turns into a mixed blessing since it could put him under the radar and allows us to take him with one of our 3rd or 4th round picks...coming from hawaii already probably has him somewhat lesser known to begin with...and sometimes the most blessed players need the kick in the pants that only pro ball can give before they really show the kind of hustle you want to see (see cole hamels)

I have BA
I have BA, but I think copyright laws limit me from posting the entire thing.  Suffice to say, it is pretty similar to what we have now.  It is a important resource though, and I have access to their scouting reports so I guess if anyone has any specific questions regarding a player we can use BA as a tie breaker.

Do you have AIM or e-mail so that we can discuss this mock without posting everything on the board for all to see?

so
i've updated my draft lists, i won't post them again because like we said earlier, who knows who could be watching...but one thing i forgot to mention earlier, i agreed somewhat with you about samardzija, i definitely moved him down my list, but not too much...and i was wary with him to begin with also because obviously hes got a huge name before he even gets on the mound but i read a few reports stating that his numbers have suffered every year because every spring he has to split time between baseball and football spring practices...but this is the first year he got permission to skip those spring practices and coaches have seen him grow by leaps and bounds, at the very least theyve said his fastball gained a few mph...so what i see is a guy with HUGE projectability (6'5", 215lbs and arms as long as telephone poles) who is just now tapping into his true potential...i mean his numbers have been pretty good to this point but now hes bringing it to another level? very impressive IMO

obviously though, you have to remember that the reason he was held back those first 2 years (football) may still be a danger as hes the top rated WR and might drop baseball altogether following next year's NFl draft...this is the main reason he dropped on my list, its very tough to say exactly what to do but based on his talent alone, i like him a lot

familiar
with most but not all of the names on that list...

HSers
If you haven't heard of someone, it's probably safe to assume he's a projectable HS pitcher that I read about on BA.

by jeck on May 26, 2006 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Still on the board...
After 55 picks, 6 to go before us.

Still on the board:

Brooks Brown
Justin Masterson RHP
Andrew Carpenter
Mark Melancon

All first round talent.

ace
ace do you have AIM?  robcast and mtk have been using it

by briands84 on Jun 4, 2006 6:23 PM EDT reply actions

Sorry, no...
I'm not really well prepared for later rounds anyway.
Good job so far though.  Hughes probably has more upside than his teamate Carpenter.

I probably would have gone with Jon Jay in round 3.  But I don't know much about the HS pitchers.

by acerimusdux on Jun 4, 2006 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah...
well im happy with shelby

by briands84 on Jun 4, 2006 7:16 PM EDT reply actions

Adam Davis...
Scouting says he has an upper-cut swing, which is a problem for someone with not a lot of power...

by briands84 on Jun 4, 2006 7:17 PM EDT reply actions

Shelby is better
Yeah...
Actually Sizemore (Virginia Comonwealth)
or Akins HS
might be better as well.

Akins has a high ceiling, but is very raw. Might be a good grab next round.

Also, maybe that Glenn Gibson, LHP, Center Moriches HS would be a good local kid to grab in round 5.

by acerimusdux on Jun 4, 2006 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Colin Curtis OF Arizona St.
Not a big fan, he might end up more a fourth OF due to lack of enough power, but everything else is there, and he's fallen farther than he should.

by acerimusdux on Jun 4, 2006 7:45 PM EDT reply actions

Curtis...
BA mentioned that all his tools have deteriorated in the wake of his recovery.  Keough is raw, but tons of tools.

by briands84 on Jun 4, 2006 7:59 PM EDT reply actions

Shane Keogh?
OK, you found one I hadn't heard of.  That probably means it's a good pick. :)

JC guy, huh.

I wasn't really that enthusiastic about Curtis.  HE seemed like a safe pick if you were out of other ideas; apparently you weren't.

But, yeah, I'd be a bit worried that he might be another Bobby Malek type who tops out in AA.

I'm also guessing alot of people here have their lists of the top college and HS guys, and miss some of the top JC talent though. So I'll trust you got a good one.
