Here....
For those that do not want to pay for BA
Thoughts
"He was their 17th-rounder last year out of Brooklyn and has really come on strong for coach Dave Pano at St. Petersburg JC. He's been in the mid-90s, and one scout told our Alan Matthews that Beato would go in the first half of the first round."
Manuel mentions he'd want first round money. What do you guys think? Should he fall, is he our guy?
He is our DFE (17th Round pick last year)
One player who I like, who will not fall though, is Brett Anderson. For a HS LHP he is extremely polished. Another player I like in the Round 4-5 area is Oregon State RHP Jonah Nickerson. I am a bit of a stathead and although Dallas Buck gets the noteriety, Nickerson has been more productive
Should signability be a concern?
maybe a good idea

no
targets
i personally think that you can never go wrong with more pitching and the mets are pretty bereft of impact pitching right now...i can think of humber, pelfrey, soler, henry owens, jon niese, royce ring & deolis guerra
unfortunately a lot of the pitching talent is going to go off the board early with the lack of positional depth in the draft...however, a lot of the top guys are righties so im thinking maybe one of the top lefties drops? someone like wade leblanc (bama), nathan culp (mizzou), dave huff (az st) or tony watson (huskers)...probably in that order IMO...thats if any of them drop of course...the last 3 actually might since they also double as relievers...
Pitching
Also Pedro Beato has definitely flown up the charts and is apparently being targeted in the first round. Rumor has it though the Mets will go as high as 1.5million to sign him, which would seem fair as that would be late first round money I believe.

other players to watch
i know a lot of people think highly of AZ closer mark melancon since he could breeze through the minors a la chad cordero or craig hansen...and his stock is dropping due to a recent ligament sprain so he may drop to us
then there are a few hitters, scott sizemore, danny payne & mark hamilton...hamilton has been discussed as a sleeper with first round talent who has displayed a good eye and some really good pop and may drop into the second round...sizemore was an early season favorite who hasn't put up great numbers this year...and payne is georgia tech's leadoff hitter who showed this season that he can bat for average and power as well but just went down with an injury for 4-6 weeks...all of these guys could be good finds for the mets with either our 1st or maybe our 2nd or 3rd picks
kentucky 2b john shelby is another guy who is supposedly a 1st-2nd round talent, hes very athletic and can hit for good power for an infielder but is scaring teams away due to his shaky plate discipline so far this season...but IF is a weak point in the mets system so this could be another diamond in the rough for us
Here is an intriguing guy in Round 2
He sounds a lot like Jose Reyes except his college numbers that he walks more and strikes out less (though we know that college numbers are not always the best predictor). His error numbers are a bit high, but maybe moving him to 2B would help
Emmanuel Burris, SS, Kent State
The junior speedster has been a force on the basepaths for some time and has continued to dominate once again this season. He's leading the Mid-American Conference in steals, swiping twice as many bases as his nearest competitor. Some consider him the fastest player in college today -- a tough claim to prove. What is known, though, is that he gets on base and causes trouble when he's there. He was the Most Valuable Player of the Cape Cod League playoffs last season after leading the circuit in hits (52) and stolen bases (35). He also finished third in runs scored (28). Defensively, he's sound and looks as though he'll get gobbled up somewhere in the second or third round.
"Obviously, he's a speed player but I don't think he's going to stay at shortstop," one Major League scouting director said. "He plays on turn now, so he has that going for him. I see him down the road as a second baseman or a center fielder. The attraction with him, though, is that you know you have a slam-dunk Major Leaguer. The insurance with him is pretty good. I feel pretty good about all the signs with him. He's a good player."
just to clarify

I read on another MOD thread
no prob
i really like chris marrero but theres NO way hes dropping to us and i'm gonna keep my fingers crossed that somehow fellow HS 3B bill rowell drops, OF travis snider too, but they looks unlikely as well...so more realistically theres guys like chris parmalee & lars anderson (who i really like) at 3B, maybe marcus lemon or john shelby at 2B and i like cedric hunter in the OF and none of them would really be reaching for the 2nd round...then theres outfield bats like mark

yeah
havent come across a couple of those names (petiton & thraikill) but ive heard of stoffel, just forgot to put him on there...same goes for negrych, i really liked him and completely forgot him, he'd probably be high on the infielders list...and probably right around john shelby on the overall list
so on draft day, how are we going to decide if there is some sort of clash in opinions? maybe a poll? or is it the farm directors final decision?

Here are more on some of the players
Matt Petiton, Garden City, N.Y., Garden City, LHP, 6-0/175
One of the premier left-handed pitchers in the country * Ranked one of the top 20 prospects in the prestigious East Coast Professional Showcase * Ranked No. 31 prospect in the nation by Team One Baseball * Ranked as the No. 62 prospect in the nation by Baseball America. Coach Fox on Petiton: "Matt was very highly recruited by many great programs. He is a very polished pitcher that throws three pitches for strikes. He also possesses a great pick-off move. Matt can be as good as Matt wants to be. He has the potential to be a weekend starter for us, and we are counting on Matt to make an immediate impact."
--------------------------------------------------
From brewerfan.net on Petiton
It's hard to find a more well-rounded pitching prospect than Petiton. He doesn't have the biggest frame, or the biggest fastball, but the collective aspects of his game makes up for one intriguing lefty. His fastball works well in the 87-89 range, and he snaps off a pretty good low-70s curveball. His changeup checks in around 80, giving him the perfect blend of speeds on his polished three-pitch arsenal. He has a quick arm that offers a fair amount of deception, and he also has a very good pickoff move. If scouts and scouting directors choose to pass on him early, he may be a tough sign given his commitment to North Carolina.
--------------------------------------------------
brewerfan.net on Josh Thrailkill
Thrailkill might just have the most projectable frame of any draft-eligible player available for the 2006 draft. Built long, wiry and strong at 6'4", 185 pounds, Thrailkill already is good now, but he's the type of player that leaves so much to your imagination just dreaming about how good he could become. His repertoire starts with his fastball, which has been clocked in the mid-90s and regularly sits right around 90 mph. He has shown the ability to spot his fastball very well, which sets up his curveball and changeup perfectly. Both secondary pitches could use more work, which is a common sentiment among any young pitcher, but both pitches have a strong foundation for added improvement. Thrailkill has committed to play for the Clemson Tigers.
More on Petiton
One of a bevy of southpaws who emerged at the event was Matthew Petiton from Garden City (N.Y) High. Petiton features a deliberate delivery with a high leg kick that evokes Dontrelle Willis. Petiton's fastball sat in the high 80s and he controlled it, as well as his secondary stuff, impressively. His command wavered when he pitched from the stretch, but he boasts a wicked pickoff move.

Nice Work Everyone
Another Pitcher to add
I would like to thank Baseball America for alerting him to me. His record his not good, but it is not for a lack of performance on his part. By far Villanova's top starter this year, Mulvey allowed less than 1 hit per IP and showed very nice command with 88 K's and only 23 BB's in 92 1/3 IP. A bit undersized at 6'1" 170, according to Baseball America he has sound mechanics and plus stuff. Might be a possibility in the Round 4 or 5 area for a less risky pick
yeah

another intriguing MI
Loo was the first prep player picked out of Hawaii in 2004, and he has been the best prospect in Arizona's wood-bat junior-college conference the last two seasons. He led Yavapai to a 49-10 record and No. 2 national ranking into early May, though he wasn't the team's best player statistically.
Loo, whose native island of Molokai is so small and rural that it has no stoplights, entices scouts with five-tool potential. Though his present power remains below average, his ability to cover the plate, make consistent, hard contact and repeat his short stroke make hitting his best tool. His raw power could profile him for third base. He moved to that position at Yavapai, but scouts agree he could play short or any other infield position as a pro thanks to above-average arm strength, excellent athleticism, good range and solid infield actions. After a rough start, he became an above-average defender at third in a short time this season.
If Loo's effort and performance were more consistent, he'd rank among the top position players available. He's a plus runner and solid baserunner, but he doesn't run out ground balls as often as scouts want to see. After being bothered by a strained thumb and gimpy ankle in 2005, Loo missed time late in the 2006 season when his elbow flared up. It was diagnosed as nerve irritation and he returned to DH in the postseason. Loo's durability will factor into whether or not the Reds--who offered him a reported bonus of more than $200,000 last summer--make another enthusiastic run at Loo.
The inconsistent effort concerns me
yeah
by Rob Castellano on May 23, 2006 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions
as for loo
as for his tools, it sounds like he could become a nice player with a very solid bat, especially if that power develops, and it also sounds like he can definitely handle the leather...who knows maybe the effort stuff turns into a mixed blessing since it could put him under the radar and allows us to take him with one of our 3rd or 4th round picks...coming from hawaii already probably has him somewhat lesser known to begin with...and sometimes the most blessed players need the kick in the pants that only pro ball can give before they really show the kind of hustle you want to see (see cole hamels)

mine is simple
so
obviously though, you have to remember that the reason he was held back those first 2 years (football) may still be a danger as hes the top rated WR and might drop baseball altogether following next year's NFl draft...this is the main reason he dropped on my list, its very tough to say exactly what to do but based on his talent alone, i like him a lot

Still on the board:
Brooks Brown
Justin Masterson RHP
Andrew Carpenter
Mark Melancon
All first round talent.
ace
Sorry, no...
Good job so far though. Hughes probably has more upside than his teamate Carpenter.
I probably would have gone with Jon Jay in round 3. But I don't know much about the HS pitchers.
Adam Davis...
Shelby is better
Actually Sizemore (Virginia Comonwealth)
or Akins HS
might be better as well.
Akins has a high ceiling, but is very raw. Might be a good grab next round.
Also, maybe that Glenn Gibson, LHP, Center Moriches HS would be a good local kid to grab in round 5.
Colin Curtis OF Arizona St.
Curtis...
Shane Keogh?
JC guy, huh.
I wasn't really that enthusiastic about Curtis. HE seemed like a safe pick if you were out of other ideas; apparently you weren't.
But, yeah, I'd be a bit worried that he might be another Bobby Malek type who tops out in AA.
I'm also guessing alot of people here have their lists of the top college and HS guys, and miss some of the top JC talent though. So I'll trust you got a good one.
