Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

John Danks

Last night John Danks of Texas' AA team had a decent night.   Any thoughts on him?

Danks (W, 3-4)    IP: 6.0 Hits: 3 Runs: 3 ER: 3 BB 1 K's: 12    HR's: 2

For the season, Danks has pitched 40.2 Innings and given up 9 home runs.  He has allowed 24 Earned Runs.  He has 56Ks and 15 walks in 40.2 innings.  A very good ratio.

Is there any movement on his fastball?  How would the picture change if you were to remove the runs scored off of home runs.  It reminds me of Blyleven.  He struck out a ton, yet gave up so many home runs.

I hope that he can turn the corner on the gopher balls.

Great Line...
His problem this year has been that he's been getting hit.  Even last night he gave up the longball.  But the last 4 starts or so, he's been incredible.  I haven't got a chance to go out to Frisco to see him (Kinda a long drive from Dallas, with traffic) but he is certainly striking people out.  I believe his 56 leads the Texas League.

Perhaps John was a little premature in saying they should send him back to A ball to sort him out (That would have killed me to see that).

Diamond has also turned it around as of late, but Hurley and Volquez were really bad.

He's my favorite of the DVD trio and Hurley....
...lately Hurley's been getting a lot of praise, and most of it is deserved...but I've had the good "feeling" about Danks for a while...perhaps I just like the lefty...

my rating of the big four
1- Danks
2- Hurley
3- Diamond
4- Volquez

I really think Volquez was overhyped last year. I really think he'll be a bust, though he might be a solid reliever.
Diamond scares me a little.  His pitch counts this year and in the past have been way too high cuz of his lack of control.  Again I think his best place in the bigs might be as a releiver but I hope not.
Hurley and Danks are sick. Danks is only 21 leading the Texas league in strikeouts with a good walk total.  He's been getting hit a little too much this year and the home runs are surprising cuz he's never really been prone to the long ball, but if you look at his age theres no reason to suggest why you wont see a big improvement there.
and I love Hurley. I also love the fact that John rated him above the DVD's when everybody else had him overshadowed
