Crystal Ball: Matt Murton

Crystal Ball: Matt Murton

I like Murton and I think he will have a solid career. Remember, the purpose of this feature is to stimulate debate and have fun. Is this a fair guess at his future? Too optimistic? Too pessimistic? Just right? What say you and why?

Seems about right.
what is that? a .370 OBP most seasons? Not too bad for your LF, about league average give or take a bit. I think Murton has a chance to win a batting title one season.

Trot-esque
That seems right.  I always thought of him as a right-handed version of Trot Nixon: the definition of "above average outfielder".

Not sure about him swiping 20 bags, though...

Reminds me of Lew Ford
Murton's swing looks a lot like Lew Ford's. Ford seemingly pulls everything, whereas Murton doesn't seem to be able to pull anything.

About Right?
I haven't seen Murton play yet.  From his stats and what I've read about him I would say he will have a very good, though not great, career.

After all these years of hearing about Corey Patterson and Hee Seop Choi, it's refreshing to see a relative dark horse like Murton come in and grab his opportunity by the throat.

Murton
That's the second time in 2 days you've talked about my fantasy sleepers. First Shelton and now Murton.

I think you're underestimating him a bit...
... some have compared his style and talent level to a right-handed Paul O'Neill.

Except for the career longevity, that's pretty close to O'Neill. I think Murton can be better than your projection, possibly even put up one season where he'd be a MVP candidate.

You might be overoptimistic on the steals. Murton is pretty slow.

Power is underestimated
I think Murton has the ability to have a 30+ HR season in Wrigley.  I like the comparison to Trot Nixon but just hoping Murton is a little more durable.

42 RBI's in 2015?
Seems like a lot for 185 ABs, John.
Policeman: Sir, are you classified as human? Korben Dallas: Ah, negative. I am a meat popsicle.

Speed
While the projections for power could go either way (too high or too low.) I don't think there's any way the Cubs let him run that much.  He may have the speed but I doubt he gets that many steals in the majors.

He's no Jeff Bagwell
Wow, except for the World Series title, the trade of Nomar Garciaparra and Murton netting O-Cab and Doug McAlphabet looks horrible for the Red Sox.  To think that Murton would have the best (rest of) career is amazing....

Steals are too High -- RBI's too low
Overall I think it is reasonable, but I don't ever see him stealing 20 bases.  I also see him getting a few more RBI's.

Just wondering -- low AB's in 2010 and 2011 due to platooning or injury?  It seems 2009 is a good enough season he would still be an everyday player in 2010.

injury
Injury. Also note the drop off in speed after two injury seasons.
