Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Fernando Martinez, OF, Mets

It's interesting to note that he's actually playing for the Hagerstown affiliate in the South Atlantic League, not stuck in the D.R.

I thought I read somewhere that he was not going to play in the US until he turns 18...

-MiLB's site says his B-day is 1/1/1988, so that matches up, but conflicts with previous data I had.
-Just called Hagerstown and they say that they have his birthday on 1/1/1989, so he's only 17...)

and here: http://msn.foxsports.com/fantasy/story/5292324

Anyway, it's news to me.
He went 1/5 with a double, scored a run and struck out twice.

Anyone want to post a projection?  Any new news they have?  Anyone seen him play?

bp
i was lucky enough to be at shea right after martinez signed and was making his first appearance in NY for some batting practice

obviously, bp is tough to take that much from but FWIW he consistently made very solid contact, definitely showed some power as well as the ability to go to all fields (as much as you can do those things during bp)...the reports ive read about fernando having a very advanced hitting approach sounds right to me, i couldnt believe it was a 17 yr old out there taking so many good cuts....i was very impressed

birthdate
Baseballamerica has his birthdate as 10/10/88

I don't know. Maybe he's actually 35.

I Saw him..
I saw him during a quick apperence during Spring Training this year. He played center and didn't record a PO if my memory is correct. He also struck out badly on a fastball high and away.

fernando
i saw him during a ST game against the marlins and he went 0-3 with 2 k's. looked overmatched against vargas, but that doesn't mean much i guess. he is 17 after all. not much to take away from the 3 ab's, but his first two were k's and his 3rd ab he seemed a bit more comfortable. hopefully he does well this year and does have that advanced approach at the plate people keep mentioning.
