Carlos Gomez Jumping to AA?

Carlos Gomez is apparently skipping High-A ball and starting the season in AA! I know some here have shown some interest in him, and obviously it'll be a move that will merit watching...

Carlos Gomez, a speedy 20-year-old outfielder, is ranked as the third-best prospect, behind Milledge and 2004 first-round draft pick Philip Humber. Gomez, who played in low Class-A Hagerstown last season, wowed Samuel in spring training.

Power
They say he's got a lot of pop in his bat, but it hasn't showed at all up to this point.  I thought they should let him start at St. Lucie and work on developing his power.  Even if they aren't concerned about his power, he could definitely use some work on his plate discipline.  I love Jose Reyes, but I don't know if two guys who run like the wind but walk twice a month are great at the top of the lineup.

I also just don't see the need for this; we've got Nady and Diaz for the time being, and Milledge will take over for Floyd in '07.  Why rush the kid?  Especially to New York?

But Omar knows best. :)

Agreed...
I also wonder if it's not a move to make him a more valuable trade chip (like the Yankees with Duncan last year), but I give Omar the benefit of the doubt more than most. At least more than most people who actively follow prospects that is...

I suppose the amount of fringe minor leaguers outfielders (both Redman's, Pagan, Valent, Lydon) they lost in the offseason could be a factor too. Omar has pretty much purged the system of most players who weren't brought in under his watch as well. Granted most aren't hard decisions, but it definitely seems like more than a coincidence. Let's hope the draft and international market replenish the farm quickly...

This will be...
a good lesson in how to screw up a prospect.

Easy on the hyperbole
Maybe the kid should actually get a chance to play and see how he reacts.  Not every player will get psyched out by high minors pitching and if he does struggle, believe it or not, some people actually handle adversity pretty well.

Well...
he was psyched out by low minors pitching too.

exactly
I've been hearing some sites hyping him up to be a bigger talent than Milledge, but he's done nothing so far to prove that
