Delmon Young tape on Today show?

I read over on another site that the Delmon Young tape was played on the Today show this morning.   Did anyone see it?

If that's true, UmpGate is getting bigger om terms of press and I think it increases the number of games that Delmon has to sit out.   Any guesses as to how many games he sits?   At first based on the precedents (Bradley/Alcantara/Alomar/etc), I thought it was going to be 10 games, but now I'm not so sure.

the season
After watching the tape, I'd be shocked if he doesn't get the season.

The only thing remotely comparable is Milton Bradley punching the ump, and he got the remainder of the season.

This incident is worse, IMO. 6 inches higher and that ump is in the hostpital.

Game of inches
6 inches to the right and the pitch might have actually been a strike too!

so?
yeah, it was a bad strike call.  A travesty, umps never blow calls.  Delmon was right to nail him with the bat..

You said it, not me
I wasn't defending Delmon Young.

Just pointing out the very limited relevance of a comment like "if the bat had hit the umpire somewhere else, he might have been hurt".

LOL
So...It is irrelevant that the bat almost hit him in the face, because the pitch wasn't actually a strike.

Good point, that makes lots of sense.

after watching it...
I think basically Delmon was just thinking: "You want to take the bat out of my hand so badly... Here, you can have it!"

Wow
I was under the assumption that he just kind of flipped the bat at the ump. He must have chucked that thing from quite a distance away. He will get more than 10 games definately. Could be the year.

Delmon tape
I've seen it on Sportscenter, the Today Show, the local news . . .pretty much everywhere.

I think he would've gotten a pretty major suspension regardless of the media exposure, just because of how far over the line he went. Somebody else mentioned that what Delmon did could be construed as assault, and while I don't think that's the case, it's certainly closer to being assault than it isn't.

Boohoo, the pitch wasn't a strike. It was a bad call. Major league umpires make them all the time, so he better get used to them pretty damn quickly.

The length of the suspension doesn't really matter, IMO. I will be very surprised if he plays at all during the rest of the season, although maybe he'll go to the AFL and/or a winter league to get his work in under what will be much quieter surroundings.

actually
Assault pretty much legally describes it. The general issue is whether there unconsented physical contact.

Unless you want to argue that an umpire implicitly consents to having a bat thrown at him as part of his job. (Hence why assault is a greyer area in sports such as hockey or football - players have already consented to a certain level of physical contact).

That said, a prosecutor would not file charges unless the umpire pressed the issue or there was a major public outcry.
