PELFREY

Didn't someone make a diary that he was called up to AA last week?

He wasn't, although he had another nice start last night.

Fill this post up for posting here are some ramblings:

~Anyone know why Brignac has only pinch hit the last couple of games?

~Can the dbacks really keep a .350ave Quentin at AAA all season if he keeps hitting like this

~Prince Fielder has tremendous bat speed.  He is really awesome to watch on a day to day bases. Those with the ticket should tune into what those in Wisconsin already know; Prince is going to be an MVP level hitter sooner than later.

Hughes and Pelfrey
Were both reported as going up to AA, so I don't know if they wanted them to get another start at High A or are just waiting for the weather to get warmer.

To go with your Carlos Quentin thought, I am assuming Stephen Drew can't be far off either.  The NL West is more then winnable and Craig Counsel and Damian Easley are not really good.

re: Hughes
the comment from Cashman was that he was going to be promoted "really soon" so I'd imagine he'll be up by the middle of May.

Pelfrey
Pelfrey was promoted after the game last night.

Don't worry
Pelfrey will be traded for Zito at the deadline anyway.

why?
They drafted him a while ago anyways?

Draft
It's not when you're drafted, it's a year from the time you sign.  He can't be traded for a while.

Can't they
Call it "PTBNL" and add Pelfrey once he's eligible? Didn't the A's do this with Bonderman?

Can't be traded until a year after you sign
and he was only drafted in last year's draft, and didn't sign until the winter

PTBNL
He could be a PTBNL, but I'd put the odds on that happening at about a million to one. Bonderman is the only time I recall it happening, though that might just be the most well known example. I know I wouldn't trust someone else with a stud pitching prospect for six months before I could even get him in my organization though. The Mets would have no incentive in regard to his development then...

Humber
Didn't want to started a whole new diary for this, so I'll throw it in here. Humber threw in an intersquad game yesterday, and of course says he's 100%. He'll throw two more games in extended Spring Training, then I suppose they'll decide where he's at. I know he's not at all a realistic option until 2007-2008, but baby steps are important...

Pelfrey's opponent...
Yovani Gallardo, put up this line:

5ip, 5h, 4r, 1er, 1bb, 10k, 0hr

...and on the year is. this:

20.2ip, 16h, 10r, 5er, 6bb, 32k, 1hr.

With all the hype he rec'd around here prior to the season, I'm surprised there isn't more talk.

Maybe not here . . .
but there's been pleanty of talk around me concerning Gallardo.  I ended up drafting both Pelfrey and Gallardo to the minor league roster of my 16 team fantasy league.  Add Wade Davis, Matt Garza, and Kevin Slowey to that mix, and I'm ecstatic about my minor league draft!

Pelfrey's Arsenal?
What kind of pitches does he throw?  With all of this talk about him pushing Victor Zambrano out the door.... I thought I remember reading that he had a plus fastball and a very good curve, but really lacked a 3rd pitch.

Does anyone else have an opinion on this

by MHD on Apr 26, 2006 10:05 PM EDT reply actions

from what i've read
He throws a plus fastball that he works off. Then he throws more a hard slurve than curve ball. A 2 seamer and a change up. He throws prodominatly fastballs, and is working hard on his breaking stuff. But i don't think he would be having this K rate if he it wasn't a decent 2nd pitch.

by JD Sussman on Apr 26, 2006 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

One of those things
"Pelfrey has a tremendous fastball that has sink and works in the 92-97 range. Not only does he have a great fastball, but he can keep coming at batters with it all game. Pelfrey had been clocked at 96 in the late innings of complete game during the 2005 season in which he threw 100+ pitches when pitching for Witchita State. In addition to a fastball that is already a plus pitch, he features a changeup and a curveball. As if that were not enough, Pelfrey also exhibits good control for anyone, much less a power pitcher. "

I do remember that it was more of a slurve when i saw him, and when he was first drafted, maybe they changed his arm angle.

Thank You
I was wondering about the status of his change up.  I am kind of shocked to see batters hitting at a .244 clip off him in Single A, that is why I was wondering if batters were just sitting fastball and laying off the curve because of the lack of a 3rd pitch.  Knowing he has a change up, even if right now it is average is encouraging to see.

Ankle...
Pelfrey had a start pushed back a couple of weeks ago with a sprained ankle, and he's been a little more hittable since. At least compared to his first  couple of starts where he allowed nothing...
