Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Carlos Marmol

There has been very little written about Carlos Marmol as one of the top pitching prospects in the Minor Leagues and I am not certain as to why that is.  So far he is off to an amazing start at AA West Tennessee posting an 0.52 ERA and 21 Ks in his first 17.1 IP.  Not to mention allowing only 2 hits in his first two starts combined, and 7 total all season.  He was not included in Baseball America's Top 100, but he has continued to post a great ERA and a 1:1 K/IP ratio at every level he has pitched.  What is Marmol's ceiling?

Here's the piece from BA yesterday...
Cubs righthander Carlos Marmol continued his domination at Double-A West Tenn on Tuesday, though it was tough to determine where he was better--on the mound or at the plate. Marmol allowed his first earned run in 17 innings in the 12-1 Diamond Jaxx win, tossing 5 1/3 innings. He gave up five hits, walked two and struck out seven.

But it was at the plate where Marmol, 23, was perhaps even better. A converted infielder, Marmol batted .268 in 523 at-bats (mostly in Rookie ball) before moving to the mound. Still, the Dominican native was surprised when he went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a homer. "I don't know where that came from," Marmol told the Jackson (Tenn.) Sun. "I'm glad they were fastballs because that's just about the only thing I can hit."

good considering lack of experience
Marmol is growing quickly compared to a lot of converted position players. I watched his 1st start last season in Daytona where he was on a 75 pitch limit and he allowed no hits through 6 innings and was yanked after 6 because of his pitch count. His biggest struggle is the strike zone; his current K:BB is much better than it was last year where he was around 1.9.
