Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Shairon Martis

SO what is the deal with this guy? He just no hit Panama, and while they don't have the most talented group of hitters their still have a few note worthy names. As a giants fan I would love to know if this guy has a high ceiling or if this is just smoke and mirrors.

The stats I know of him are that he is 18 years old and struck out 50 in 35 innings in rookie ball last year, oh and appearently he's dutch.

So how does this guy project?

Thanks,

Keenlow

Stolen directly from DrB's top 50 list
"2-1, 1.85, 34 IP, 50 K, 9 BB!! for AZL Giants. Mid 90's fastball with advanced secondary stuff and command. Barring injury, this kid is going to move up fast. Since we have a paucity of "sure thing" prospects, I see no reason not to get out in front of a kid with this upside."

Here is the link to the list proper http://giantprospects.blogspot.com/2006/02/dr-bs-preseason-top-50.html

Thank for the Props
After reviewing the reports of yesterday's no hitter, it seems that "mid 90's fastball" may have been a bit of a stretch, but that came from BA's scouting report.  The reports I've seen had him sitting at 91-93 MPH yesterday.  Still, if he has great command and secondary stuff to go with it, that is plenty of velocity.

For anyone who is interested, there are some video clips of Martis pitching yesterday on mlb.com

Velo varies
from start to start and this early in the year its likely his arm isn't at top form

Martis and Joaquin
The Giants have a pair of great looking young pitchers in their organization, Martis and Waldis Joaquin.  Of the two, Martis is much more advanced and will probably move up faster.  Joaquin probably has a higher ceiling given that he is physically bigger and has a fastball that has consistently hit 98 MPH.  Joaquin is less developed at this point so he has a longer road ahead of him.

AQA
in the AQA thread a week ago john named both martis and joaquin as two of his breakout candidates for 2006. i think he only listed about 5 guys total, so obviously he really likes both of them. i don't normally put much stock in complex league stat lines but they were both very impressive.
