Ryan Doherty- what's in his future?

I got interested in him when I read an CNNSI article on him: a 7-foot closer for Notre Dame!

What's his pitch list, and, more importantly, what's in his future? Will he make the majors, proving that height isn't a problem, or will he fizz out in the minors? I know minor-league closers almost always pan out; what's minorleagueball.com think of him?

Doherty
Does anyone know if Ryan is related to Matt Doherty, the guy who used to be the ND basketball coach?  It just seems like too much of coincidence that they would have the same last name, both be about 7 ft tall, and both have a connection to ND.

Anway, he's got to be one of the most intriguing prospects out there.  I know I wanted the Giants to draft him if he was available in the 4'th round.  What round was he drafted in anyway?  I'm not sure it matters what his velocity is.  That ball must look like it's coming straight down to the batter.

Draft status
I believe Doherty went undrafted and signed as a free agent with Arizona.

Velocity
He went undrafted partly because of his control, and partly because his velocity was down below 90. Supposedly, the D-backs got him back into the 90's by fixing him.

Question: Compared to an average pitcher, how much closer to home plate does a 7'1 guy realease the ball? Doe he? How much increase in MPH can you accord that?

Not sure about
the connection to Matt, but I wouldn't be suprised if the two weren't related despite the similarities, especially with it being ND. On their football team they have Brady Quinn, true JR, star QB from Dubling Coffman HS (OH). And on their basketball team they have Chris Quinn, true SR, team leader and leading scorer from Dublin Coffman HS (OH). And yet, neither is directly related.

Sorry for jumping off topic...

I wish I was 7'1". I'd even have settled for 6'1".

dohertys
Matt was a college senior at North Carolina when Ryan was born (in NJ).
They are not related.  Matt was only the coach at ND for one season, then he bailed to take the job at UNC.

judging by that pic of Ryan...
He appears to have a spine.  Obviously hes no relation to Matt.

Actually I dont know why I rip on the guy so much.  I love watching Carolina lose and he was good at that.

(I do mean this jab good naturedly btw)

Doherty's grade
Here's what John wrote about him back in July

Over theTop?
Unlike Randy Johnson who kind of slings the ball in a short arm/sidearm motion, that picture looks like Doherty throws from almost over the top.  What does that mean?  Is it more intimidating for a 7 footer to throw sidearm or over the top?

Draft
With something like 50 rounds in the draft, and given the liklihood of anyone picked after round 10 of ever making an impact in the major leagues, why wouldn't someone take a chance on a 7'1" pitcher?  Maybe he's a longshot, but it just seems like the upside is huge both in terms of on field success and fan interest.

More on Doherty
Doherty was considered a top-10 round talent, he also fell in the draft because there were questions about his signability.

Last I saw him, he was consistently around 91-92 (late in the year with Notre Dame) with his fastball and 83-85 with the slider, which he threw a lot. Control was iffy, but pitches had good movement. He was a flyball pitcher at ND too.

Nice bullpen sleeper.

Doherty
he's nothing more then toilet water for my ass.  Im sure he's ok for what he is, but its a sad day when I have to consider a player like this for the future of my fantasy team

Fantasy Team?
Who said anything about your fantasy team?  Doherty is an interesting guy to talk about based on his height alone.  If you don't want to consider him for your fantasy team, then don't.  There must be plenty of other players out there for you to like.

yep..
like J.Brent Cox and Joey Divine, and maybe Travis Bowyer if he stops throwing that FREAKING straight-arrow FB and puts a little grease on it .. yep yep yep

Um....I believe you're at the wrong blog
Faketeams.com is where you should be....

This is a Minor League Baseball site that deals with prospects, not a prospect site that puts things in Fantasy Baseball terms.

Devine?
I haven't seen the other two pitch, but Devine has nasty stuff.  His fastball is anything but straight.  He's going to be good.

Doherty in NCAA for XBOX
is listed at 5-5 240, I bet theire height meter maxes out at 6-10....and what is up with the haters on this site, all of a sudden...is it just me, or do we have some sabotaging haters infiltrating this wonderful site lately(of course i am referring to the keeper league comment, and others though out)
