Any hope for Marlon Byrd...
Agreed to a 1 yr deal with the Rangers today. Surely they don't expect him to be the opening day cf. Maybe a platoon with Lofton? He has been really lousy since his rookie year and doesn't even have strong left/right splits that would make him a likely platoon candidate. Just a low risk/high reward move? I use 'high reward' very generously.

Well, in retrospect...
Looking just a little closer, only 37% of his hits went for extra bases, and he only had a walk rate of close to 12 PA/BB, both of which aren't particularly weak numbers, per se, until you realize the guy is 25, so he's 2-3 years behind the comp, and when that's the case, he needs to really be raking to get my attention, and Byrd wasn't.
So, it's not a surprise he flopped. Even in AA his numbers on the surface look good, but then his %XBH was only 36%, but his walk rate was a tad better at 11 PA/BB show that he really wasn't doing that good, and at 24, he needed to be doing much better. But those numbers pale compared to guys like Votto (43%, 7.5), Pence (45%, 9.7) or Gordon (44%, 7.75), and even Stewart (47%, 10), all of whom ourperformed him at 21-22.
It's why I'm unconvinced about Sweeney, and the only reason I don't completely disregard him is because he's young.
