2007 MLB Draft Order

Congratulations to MLB for fixing the draft. It looks better than it ever has...

Before round two even begins... the Devil Rays, Royals, Pirates, Brewers, and Rockies each have only one pick. The Texas Rangers and San Fransisco Giants each have five picks. The real winner though is the San Diego Padres. The Padres have the possibility of acquiring eight picks before the second round even begins. Congratulations to Kevin Towers for exploiting the system by telling your players not to accept arbitration.

I guess small market teams can find other ways to improve their team.

Giants?
The Giants get NYM's first rounder for Alou, plus a supplemental pick.  We get another supplemental for losing Stanton.  Where did the other one come from?

Jason Schmidt
Sorry for the two posts.  I forgot to comment on Schmidt in the first one.  It appears likely that Schmidt will sign elsewhere giving the Giants another first or second rounder plus another supplemental pick.

Towers and Moneyball
As a Jays' fan, I can think of plenty of reasons to fault Josh Towers, but exploiting the free agent compensation system is not one of them.  (I believe San Diego GM is Kevin Towers).

Other clubs, notably Boston, have played this kind of game before by replacing their own FA's with different ones, which resulted in numerous supplemental picks.  San Diego appears to be exploiting it now, but one wonders whether they'll be able to afford all the sandwich picks.

I think this was the real reason why the A's picked guys like Jeremy Brown so high in the famous Moneyball draft -- not because they thought Brown et al were the best prospects available, but because they were affordable given all the picks Oakland had that year.

Much too early
The order for the first round will not be set until all type A's have signed.  For instance, if the Rangers decide to sign Barry Zito, or any other type A ranked higher than Frank Catalanatto, then the Jays will not get the Rangers first rounder.
Waiting for Travis Buck

if Tony G signs elsewhere, the Brewers get another 2 picks in the 1st round.

J.D. Drew
Anyone know why the Dodgers won't get compensation for Drew?

Contract
Pretty sure that his contract stipulated that if he opted out, the Dodgers could not offer him arbitration.

Todd Walker just accepted
arbitration so does that mean one less pick for the Padres?
