Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Sean Burroughs

Burroughs was signed by the Mariners to a minor league deal and will be a non-roster invitee to spring training.

Is there anyone out there who thinks this kid can rebound and turn into the star everyone thought he'd be?

If in fact he does finally develop, that would make beltre expendable.

I met him once
and his family.  I was drunk and they were all giddy that I knew who he was.

Then he banged a hot girl that I knew that I wanted to bang, and I was sad.

Re: I met him once
So you're saying that even though he's sucked so far, he's having a pretty good life, right, Galt?

There is
a big giant fork sticking out of his back.  I don't even think he'd be a great slo-pitch softball player, since he seemingly can't hit the ball out of the infield.

No....
I don't think this guy is going to make it.  If I recall correctly, didn't TB have a need for a 3b and he couldn't even get his foot in the door.

if i did it...
id' call Edgar Martinez and see if he could do anything to help. Mind you TB should've called on Boggs to do the same. this is purely speculation on my part, so please feel free to correct me, but i feel this is totally an attitude thing, like maybe he doesn't feel the need to put in the work to get better, and he's been coasting since he was pro. maybe a few years of the minors would be enough of a reality check to turn him around.... i say probably not.

If he's still trying to stick at 3B, he's foolish
He doesn't have the bat, and he wasn't even a great fielder.

Try at 2B, and see if he can be a slap-hitting, decent fielder with good plate discipline.

He's got a decent eye, and he doesn't strike out much, so he'd be a servicable 2B if he could get up to the .280/.350/.400.

Certainly not anywhere near where people thought he'd be, but if he moved from 3B, he could potentially get a full time job for a crap team.

Burroughs
I think this is right.  It's worth a shot for both Seattle and Burroughs to give it a go at 2B, his lack of power doesn't hurt him as much there.  Otherwise, especially given Safeco, there's no way he hits with enough power to make it in Seattle.

Optimistic
San Diego tried him at second, when they had a real need for a second baseman, and it didn't work out.  Once the league adjusted to him, he proved incapable of maintaining that batting line.  If he could put up a .750 OPS as a third baseman, he could probably find a few times calling him, particularly given the lack of strikeouts.  Problem is, his bat's regressed and he just does't have much left.  The guy put up a .520 OPS in Durham last year.  If he's trying to stick in baseball, he's foolish (I don't actually mean that, but you get the idea).

Burroughs
peaked at age 12 in the LLWS. I wonder what it's like to realize it was all downhill from there.

Could be worse
my athletic career peaked at about 8, and my peak wasn't as high as his.

Olympics
The guy won a gold.  I wouldn't complain.
