Guitar Hero

In light of Joel Zumaya's freak injury revelation...

Star-divide

I thought it might be a great time to discuss Guitar Hero. Any fellow intense GH gamers on this site?  I got Guitar Hero 2 a few weeks ago and felt like a true rock star when I beat Freebird on expert today... it was truly a beautiful moment. Game mags have all put the game in at least their top 10 if not top 5 games of the year. A pretty stellar investment, even at the $70 it takes to buy the game.

What song is your favorite? I'd say Carry on my Wayward Son and Jessica are my favorites from GH2, and Heart Full of Black from GH1.

good choice
Heart Full of Black is my favorite in GH1 too. I beat 1 on expert the night before 2 came out. It took me probably 2 weeks to beat that one on expert. My favorite is Rock This Town.

GH2
Jessica, John the Fisherman and War Pigs are my favorite to play.

I've had the game for a while, but I put it down for a few weeks to play Final Fantasy XII.  In GH2, I'm about midway through Expert mode.

Is it just me, or are some of the songs on Expert ridiculously easy, while others are damn challenging?    Message in a Bottle and Woman in particular were pretty simple.

Does It Teach?
I haven't seen this game.  I play the guitar, but not very well.  I sing a little too.  Does this game teach you how to play, or is it strictly fantasy.  I would definitely be interested if it teaches you how to play. Otherwise, I got better things to do.

No it doesn't
It's pure shit. There's just like 5 buttons at the neck. It doesn't matter if you hit the top of the button or the bottom. Then there's a button where you would strum that doesn't make any sense.

It's incredibly stupid unless you just treat it as a game, but I still wouldn't understand the fascination.

I don't think anybody who plays it has any illusion that it's like a real guitar. I know I don't. I play it because it's damn fun.

I want my games
to be realistic as possible damnit.  Just like this morning when I threw for 868 yards on Madden '07 w/ Rex Grossman.

I get your point, but I understand the comment above as well.  I don't understand the fascination with this game, and I play an instrument.  There should at least be a difference in high/low tones on the neck.  To compare to other games, that comes off like I was trying to throw the ball to Mushin Muhammed, but the ball went to the other side of the field to Thomas Jones.  No real skill/fun there for me if you're just pressing random buttons.

Not that Hard
You can get a decent acoustic guitar for about $100 or a decent electric + amp for a little under $200.  It's actually pretty easy to learn.  I learned from 1 free lesson from a friend who showed me the basics, then read books and practiced.  Not saying I'm great, but it's very satisfying to be actually accompany myself on a song.  Just use the fantasy time to practice the real thing.

I'll actually say it does help a bit
I think Guitar Hero has improved my sight-reading skills (from non-existent to...well, existent).  It won't help you learn the fretboard or anything, but it helps train you to read ahead and 'know' what your fingers are doing without having to concentrate on it, so you can mentally work on getting in position to play what's coming up.  It's a sort of cross-training.

But if you're looking for guitar instruction, then no, GH is nowhere close.  Best description -- it's DDR with better music and a little guitar instead of a mini-dance floor.

GT2
I've got one song to go.  I beat Six on expert about 3 weeks ago, but Jordan has not been good to me so far (58% every time).

It's a great game, and people who play guitar (like me) need to stop whining about it.  Most bands play it on their tour buses.  It's ridiculously fun even if it's dissimilar to real guitar.
