Dodger-Yankee Trade Idea

What do you guys think of this potential trade:

Dodgers get Alex Rodriguez

Yankees get Andy LaRoche, James Loney and Jon Meloan

This seems like the type of deal Colleti would love to make and might actually make sense.  LaRoche and Loney would both be blocked in LA and could slide in at the corners in NY; Loney this year, LaRoche the year after.  The Dodgers would be set with A-Rod and Nomar at the corners for the nest 3 years (never mind considering how odd two of the mid-90s SS Mt Rushmore would be on opposite sides of the diamond).  Meloan is a quality RP arm that could help NY this year or next.

I think the talent levels are pretty close.  I'm just not sure if the Yankees would ever trade A-Rod without receiving proven MLB talent.

What do you guys think?

Who would play 3rd for the Yanks this year?

I love the idea of Looney with the Yanks though.

AROD
only gets moved if a  good, young, cost controled pitcher is involved- in the dodgers case billingsley.

i doubt the dodgers give up bills, and i doubt that the yankees even begin talking to the dodgers unless they say "bills is not untouchable" from there on it would be bills+laroche and then some other player (maybe meloan, loney ect.)

i dont see an AROD trade happening with either LA team cause they value thier prospects too much

I don't like the trade
not one pitcher in the equation. Come on, if the yankees trade A-Rod (which I doubt will happen) the Yankees will trade A-Rod for pitching. Sure no question a young athletic and talented position player would help but the specific purpose if the yankees trade A-Rod is for pitching. If the Dodgers don't want to trade billingsley then give us Scott Elbert at least or Johnathan Broxton. Yankees need pitching period. Plus the Angels from the reports I,ve read really need a impact position player and the Monero (If I mispell the owner's name of the Angels my apologize for that) really wants to make a splash and I assume he has his fascinations about A-Rod. Atleast the Angels might be willing to do it with giving us Ervin Santana and Scott Shields. I cannot say the same for the team that use to play in Brownsville Brooklyn.

Not RIDICULOUS
But unlikely.  Agree with everyone who says that the Yanks would want pitching back; also, LA would ask the Yanks to eat 50% of whatever money they pay ARod (less the Rangers share).

Re
Yanks eat 50% of A-Rod's salary? LMAO. Were you actually thinking when you typed that?

Prior to this offseason...
...such a concept wouldn't be that ridiculous.  But with the insane deals being handed out in the past few weeks, ARod at 18M (Rangers are picking up a large chunk of his 25M annual, right?) is about right.

I would think that the Yankees would prefer pitching to the combination of bats, or Matt Kemp rather than LaRoche.

Re
Even prior to this offseason it would be ridiculous seeing as how the Rangers pick up I belive 9 mill. But after this offseason where Juan Pierre is making 9 a year, it's just wow.

hey,
I'd rather pay A-Rod 9 million a year for being on my team at one point in time than pay Juan Pierre 9 million a year to suck...
I'll be the first A+ prospect... www.myspace.com/posingforpennies

The Yankees
Would probably be looking for more MLB ready young pitching...if they were to deal Rod they'd want a replacement 3B then lots of pitching.  They wouldn't have either in this deal (at least no 2007 3B.)

by kramerica1515 on Dec 16, 2006 5:00 PM EST   0 recs

No way would the Yankees do it
A-Rod at $16 million a year is a bargain in this market.

The problem, however, is that while other teams would love to be paying someone of his caliber only that much money, they don't want to give up the young, talented players it would take to make it worth the Yankees while.  It's the same thing with Manny now.

Sure, with the money they're making you can't get nearly that caliber of a player on the open market anymore, which makes young, talented, cost controlled players are the more valuable to GMs.

The other part
that people might be forgetting is that A-Rod has his opt out clause, and if the city of New York doesn't warm up to him this year, he may exercise it after the season just to move someplace else.  Still, Meloan needs to be upgraded to a better pitcher for this to really work.  I could actually see this working if Meloan is replaced by Penny and LA assumes all of the remaining A-Rod contract (which for the next few years would only be an $8M difference anyway).

how funny
Would it be if the yankees traded ARod, whether it be now or at the deadline(dk why they would tho unless there were major injuries and boston ran away with it all). And when he got to his new team he opted out after the season. Pull a little JD drew Action. AROD is my favorite player and i think he is classier than that, but it would be too funny.

by Metty5 on Dec 16, 2006 6:38 PM EST   0 recs

This would be close to fair value
but i don't think either team would want to pull that. for one the Yankees probably ask for one of Kuo/Broxton/Billingsly/Elbert/Kreshaw thrown in also. for two if the dodgers did do that they are throwing out 3 top of the line young players for A-rod. which could easily backfire
