Peralta

I don't remember if there has already been a diary posted about Johnny Peralta, but what does everyone think he will do in 2007? He had a really good rookie season and then had a rough one last year. Maybe it was just a second year slump, does anyone think he can return to his 2005 form? Does anyone know what kind of work ethic Peralta has? Just wondering if maybe he will head into this offseason with a little more incentive to prove to everyone that he can repeat the season he had in 2005.

It's not just you
But he is listed on sportsline as only being 6'1 185 pounds.  Still the weight issue contributes to why he is a poor fielding SS and may have a position switch at some point in his career to 3b

Re: Peralta
The problem with Peralta is that the entire league know that he swings at only fast balls. Teams are throwing him off speed stuff out of the strike zone and he is consistently chasing them. That's just the way it is for Peralta.

All teams are doing this to him. So, he needs to adjust to that. I'm going to give him one more year to see what happens. 2007 will tell us a lot about Peralta's future.

soooooooo i was right
So my comparison to Berroa was correct. Berroa annihilated fastballs in 2003, ROY. They started throwing him junk outside the zone, and he goes DOWNHILL!

Maybe Peralta CAN adjust unlike Berroa. But at this point of his career, fairly close to the same player.

I think he can bounce back a bit!
Hello everyone,

Regarding Peralta, I think he'll do better than he did in 2006, now that he knows what teams are doing to him.  He showed brief flashes late in the year of staying back on the ball and driving it the other way.  I don't know if he'll put up 2005 numbers, but I think they'll be better than his 2006 numbers.

Regarding his work ethic, I think Jhonny cares, but he's one of those guys who doesn't show much emotion, so it looks like he doesn't care.  I know Eric Wedge called him out once or twice for not making a play Wedge felt he should have made.

Peralta's defense will never be Omar Vizquel's defense, but Peralta has a strong arm and can usually make the plays on balls he gets to.  That's why some fielding metrics actually rated him as an average to above-average SS defensively, while others rated him as below-average.  It just depends on the metrics used.

Overall, I think Jhonny will bounce back, though I don't think it will be his 2005 numbers, but I think he will improve from his 2006 campaign.

Take care and have a great weekend!
