Tigers needs for shortstop

I think a perfect fit for the tigers this offseason would be to try and find a way to add Hanley Ramirez to their lineup.  This would add a true leadoff hitter with the necessary need for a future shortstop.  This allows Guillen to shift to first and Granderson to move down in the order.  I am unsure about how much Detroit would have to give up in this swap.  I think maybe Humberto Sanchez and Craig Monroe might do it even though i would not like to see monroe go we have Maybin on the way which will shift Granderson over to the corner anyways.  It may not look like a good idea to swap Monroe on the surface but overall you might have your future Alan Trammel (not in stats but in longevity with the team) in your hands when all is said and done. Ramirez struck out 50 less times than Granderson last year (who didn't) in almost 100 less at bats.  I think Ramirez also walked more than Granderson but i am not sure of that fact.  This also adds true speed with Ramirez's potential to steal 50 bags a year.

Dream On
No way do the Marlins trade Ramirez.  No way they should.  Bark up another tree.

No way that deal works
Humberto Sanchez and Craig Monroe.

Is it fair ...maybe...But a low income team like Marlins is not trading a cheap decent SS.

Ramirez
I'd hardly refer to him as decent. Cheap he is but he's far better than decent. Try Jose Reyes light. For now.

M-Cab
While they're at it, I think they should go for Miguel Cabrera too.

maybe if the Tigers send them some money
Some sweet, sweet, sweet money that apparently the Marlins owner can't resist.

I'm a Tiger fan, I approve this trade (in fact, I'd almost feel a little guilty).

WTF...
is this?

Why would the Marlins send over their franchise SS for a pitcher who has had elbow problems and a mediocre left fielder?

Why move Guillen to 1st?
All I've heard is that he's about average with the glove.  I'm a big believer in not moving guys the wrong direction on the defensive spectrum unless you just have to (injury, etc.).  Is there something I'm missing with Guillen's glove that means he needs to move off of SS?

Just get a SS from the Braves
for some starting pitching. The Braves have Yunel Escobar and Elvis Andrus, 2 great young stud SS. Andrus is more advanced and should be ready about the time Guillen is done. When Renteria is done the Braves will have Escobar about ready. Not sure if they could hammer out a deal but it makes some sense.

You need
to ask yourself why Florida would possibly make this deal?  Do they really need more young pitching?  Do they need a mediocre corner outfielder?  No, and no.  Moreover, what would they do at shortstop after they traded Ramirez?

Florida needs a CF more than anything, along with some relievers.  If Detroit really wants Hanley Ramirez, it would require them trading a package more like Granderson+Zumaya.  Detroit would probably also have to throw in Carlos Guillen and cash, because Florida would then need a shortstop and they're probably too cheap to pay for Guillen's salary.

How does Granderson, Zumaya, Guillen, and cash for Hanley Ramirez sound?  Not too good, I bet.  This is why good young players rarely get traded, especially ROY-types.

Besides, what's wrong with Guillen at SS?  Why not just overpay Garciaparra or Ramirez or trade some pitching for a decent 1st baseman?

Why not look within?
Yes, Michael Hollimon is old for the leagues he's been in, but Detroit isn't pushing him at all.  His numbers the last 2 years are great for a SS (double digits in 2B, 3B, HR his only 2 pro-ball years).

Why not advance him quicker this year and look to him for 2008?  Start him in AA to see how he handles it.

Whatever happened
to Giarratano anyway?  Haven't really followed him this year...

knee injury
kept him out most of the season.  The only time he was on the major league roster was right before Sept. 1 to put him on the DL to get playoff flexibility.

His luster as a prospect has tarnished.
