Off topic ... Gold Glove travesties?

Stay connected for news and updates

In know this is a site for prospects, but we have a TON of very knowledgeable baseball folks in this forum and I would love some opinions on the Gold Glove awards.  Specifically, what is the problem with the voting process (see lists below)?

My complaints:

  • How is it possible that Brad Ausmus beats out Yadier Molina?  I know Ausmus is very good, but Molina was absolutely brilliant.
  • Pujols?  Right, and Bobby Abreu is also a GG.  I'm not trying to take away anything from him, he is one of the top 3 players in all of baseball.  BUT a gold glover?  Can you honestly say his defense would hold up to a JT Snow or John Olerud (in their primes)?
  • Jeter.  Again, not taking anything away from what he brings to the table.  But "intagibles" is not part of winning a GG.  Does he compare with Ozzie Smith or Omar Vizquel fielding wise?
  • Questions:
  • Is this a result of Rawlings pushing buttons to get big names (sell more gloves)?
  • Is it politics?
  • Am I nuts and these guys actually deserve the awards?
  • Disclaimer:
    - DON'T tell me offense plays a role in this award ... or you WILL feel my wrath.  hehehe
